Pole truck:

So I have started making a Gin Pole truck, similar to what we see in oil the patch down in South Texas, still in the early stages as you can see.

The drive train consists of a stock tamiya 3 speed with a PMD 4:1 and 65T RC4WD motor. Seems to get around ok, just does not turn well at all. I can attribute that to the long wheel base....

Nothing is screwed down on the bed yet if you notice some dimensional issues......







The Gin poles will be telescoping and fit into grooves in the bed when not in use.

I have also added a little detail to what will be the rolling tail board, any idea on how to fasten the half-round to the tail board? I'm leaning towards JB weld but in general I would like to stay away from that product. My tig is DC only so I cannot weld Al with it.....



Lastly, I am trying to figure out my winch situation. I'm thinking planetary gear motors will be the strongest. Any suggestions?

what kind of work do you do with a gin pole truck??

Thanks for the tip bigford, I tried 1/8" stick rods last night with poor results. Gin pole trucks are basically a cheap, dangerous crane. they are used for moving and assembling drilling rigs, tanks and skids. The real goal is to lift enough to get the front wheels off the ground

look on ebay for aluminum brazing rod there susposed to melt with map gas

Made a little more progress recently. Its finally cooling down enough in South Texas to play in my garage.



5th wheel mounting plate I made. I'm thinking of getting some really small endmills to add some detail:

With the gin poles folded up. There are also slots in the truck bed for the poles to scope down and fit flush into the bed:



Still trying to work out the winches. I bought some motors from servo city but am struggling with what ESC and such.

I want to build a crane someday and I want to use the bumper winches from RC4WD . There cheap and come with little controllers . Just a thought . Mike

the rc4wd winch are cool and will flat pull 6 pounds. you can spool the rope out
with little effort and forget dead lifting

If you have room for it or can hide it somewhere your best bet is a servo winch. It will out do the RC4WD by a ton and depending on what one you get some have a freespool feature. So instead of using the radio to have to unspool the line you just pull it out by hand.
