I'm setting up a truck without a MFU, so need a Electronic Speed Controller.
Using a 55 turn brush type motor with NiMh battery, mounted in a daycab, so need a small size ESC. What ESC's are you guys using? Thanks for any help!

Ahh miss read the "WITHOUT" Part sorry about that.. I run Castle sidewinder esc's in my trucks that dont have MFU's in them. You can run lots or little voltage and you can run Lipo too also you can plug it into the computer and set all you parameters like break and drag break and punch power witch is your take off power plus many other things they are great Esc's.

Castle has come out with a new Sidewinder ESC. It is the 'SV2' - I think it is cheaper than the original Sidewinder.
http://www.castlecreations.com/produ...inder_sv2.html If you want a simpler esc I would try a Losi MSC12L (not bad for the price). http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...522#quickSpecs |

Something to consider is: What type of braking feature you would like? One is 'drag brake' and the other is your regular 'brake'. As I understand it, an example of 'drag brake' is when your truck is moving and you let your throttle go to neutral, brake is immediately applied (in the Castle esc the amount of drag brake is programmable). And if your truck is on a slope it would hold there provided that the esc is programmed accordingly.

I'd go with castle creations. The 1/18 sidewinder micro has soft start and braking features, and can do 3s lipo or NiMH and brushed or brushless. Size is nice at 0.95 x 1.72 x 0.4" for only 60 bucks.

The tazer is much better than the other one I think but I would still go the castle rout you can beat them you will never replace it.

OK, more questions;
Seems like the Castle ESC's need to be programmed with a laptop? Most others are field programmable? Can someone explain how 'drag' and 'regular' braking work? What's the difference between the 2? And what about protection against pulling into reverse while trying to brake on a downslope? Is there a feature for this? The Tekin sounds good, but being so small, can it handle the size/weight of these trucks? My trailers with loads on them are pretty heavy - in the 20 to 25 pound range on ball bearing axles. What kind of heat buildup on stiff grades?

Here are some pics of the Twister 2.2 ESC we were using these to race with but brushless took over so now we use a $250 ESC in stock class or just to bash with. It is smaller than the receiver even the capacitor they give you with it is bigger than the esc and it has no motor limit and no heat sink just a Small sealed case.
This is my legend stock class car. ![]() This is now my drift car and was my first VTA car sad to say but I did better with this cheap TT-01 Tamiya than I did with my TC5 Team Associated. ![]() Travis

Thanks for the info, Travis.
So, these big heavy trucks are the same to an ESC as a smaller racing car? Hard to believe! |
