Hey everyone, Thought i'd start one for the trailer i'm going to be starting. It's going to be a scissorneck equipment trailer. Picking up the steel monday. I'm going with a 1x1/2x1/8 channel. Might be a bit heavy but it will be easy to weld together and large enough to get the scale holes in the side to look good. Picture is a what i'm going to build, Decided to go with this style as it will be much easier to make.

Hi, I am building a tipper trailer and I have chosen Aluminium to keep the weight to a minimum, have you only chosen steel for strength and how much do you expect it to weigh when you are finished?

Hi cammo, I've chose steel because I can get it cheap and it's easy to work with. I don't want a lot of screws and I don't have an aluminum welder just a couple for steel. I'm not sure yet what the weight will be but I know it will be very strong.

I got the steel today, And put together a couple of rough drawing. The steel is 1x1/2x1/8 an was a dollar a foot. Will sure be strong! One of the drawings is 1:1 and the other is converted to 1:14

I'm not sure if anyone's following this post, but i hope so because i have a very important question. What's the recommendation for the inner frame width. I'm thinking the same width as truck frame but i'm not sure as i'm going to be having the channel face outwards not inwards like the trucks. Any idea? I will start working on it again tomorrow. Had a root canal today so it was a write off.

Hey houghie ,my oppinion is you might look at the 1:1 and make a good judgement on the width.Build it to suit your eyes and your enjoyment

what deck width are you going with ? for my scale 102" width I went with 3" outside to outside for the frame rails also . another factor is what axles are you using ? if a stock tamiya trailer axle , it will depend on how you plan to mount them . If it were me , I'd make my own setup (I did) do to the weight My rogers 55 ton is all steel and it weighs as much empty as what most would put on their stock trailer axles .

Thank you for the replies guys, Trailer is going to be 8 9/16 wide, 1:1 trailer is 10 feet. I think i'm going to attempt to make my own axles. Glad you pointed out the spacing for the wheels oz, That never crossed my mind before. I did a bit more work today,
This is the first rail i made, ![]() Then i put a couple welds to hold the second one to it so they would be exactly the same after the welding and grinding on second one, Worked out really well! ![]() This is the two of them spaced out on floor afterwords ![]() |

What did you use to convert the measurements from 1:1 to 1:14?

Your right chris, It is suppose to fold, Either to load or for use on big oilfield trucks. I'm going to make mine look like it folds when it's done but i don't plan on it actually folding. Being it's my first trailer i'm trying to keep it somewhat simple. Here's the specs i'm going off of, I also decided to make a rigid beavertail at back instead of a flip up one.
