Well two months have gone by again since the last time I worked on this. I had cut the leaf springs months ago and had most of the machining done on the trunnion thingy so I thought I should start putting it all together. In an effort to make the springs look thicker I sheared some styrene to the same width as the springs and glued it on. I then made up the U bolts and threaded the ends for 2-56 nuts. Once painted I think this will look pretty good. For now it reminds me of an Oreo cookie.lol I also finally bolted the front fenders on using 0-80 bolts.

Thanks boys. I spent a few hours working on some frame plates today. It will have to go back on the shelf again tomorrow.

The real truck has the frame gusseted in the middle to support the twin, triple stage hydraulic cylinders. I machined some gussets up for the toy today and have them temporarily held in place.

Thanks very much!

I've been working on it a bit again. I made the fuel tank today and started on the rad shutters. A few days back I made up the muffler and heat shield. I started making the marker lights but they are smaller than a Tamiya light. Anyone have an idea where I could buy slightly smaller orange lenses or even the orange plastic? I'm thinking I will need to make my own but I was hoping not to.lol

Thanks guys I had another suggestion that I am going to look into first and that's a local plastics store. They may have amber acrylic.

Here's a small but tedious update. 2 1/2 days of off and on fiddling to get the shutters made and glued in at the right spacing. It may not be perfect but I'm not redoing it!lol

Looks great, but I thought you were going to have them heat activated off the motor.....or was that just a bad dream?

Haha! Gotta stir the pot hey?

I was going to operate them with a servo like I did on my tiny KW but I'm not happy with how they work on that truck and on top of that the Hayes owner would like an interior in the cab. That means all of the electronics and battery have to fit under the hood and it's a tight squeeze on my own Hayes without adding more stuff. I put them in the semi open position so that the speakers could scream!lol

Thanks Ed.

Well I've been working on this a lot lately trying to get it done before the next decade starts. I had intended to make my own diffs but I just don't want to build something for someone else that might be grief down the road. I'm a bit disappointed in myself because everything but the rear axles will be hand made. Oh well, the fellow I'm building the truck for will like it just the same so carry on we must. The rear suspension is done now finally. It was a lot of PITA work to make all of this come together but I think it worked out fairly well. It has good articulation, looks more like the real deal than anything I could purchase and the springs are STIFF which is good. Another nice feature is that it doesn't flop all over when you pick it up like my truck with the Lesu suspension. I also got the gearbox fitted as well. I like how it worked out looking like an oil pan. It should look good painted Cummins old gold.. Tomorrow I will be trying to sort out the drive shaft situation and then I can start on the body again.
