Battery connector help

I installed a 2c novak smart stop on my emaxx, I tied it in with the battery leads coming from the esc, when i connect the last connection(the 3 pin plug coming from the esc into the smart stop, as soon as the pins touch it starts smoking...but from what I've read on some traxxas forums i have it installed the same way as others and theres work just fine, could it be a faulty smart stop? or did i overlook something obvious?
