so does anyone know if i need the gear reduction or dual motor set-up ? to be able to pull a child (50lbs)

No need for the dual motors. One will work fine, especially if you go with a 55t-65t motor and gear reduction unit. I pulled my two children with a stock motor, stock pinion and no reduction just to see if it would and it did. I wouldn't run it like that in stock form a lot, but with a gear reduction you really should not have a problem.
