Well the reduction itself will affect all axles connected to it. Not just one of them. Most of us use a gear reduction to slow down the truck and make it more realistic driving than just the basic three speed. So if your happy with the current speed of your rig then a 1:1 is fine, if you would like to slow it down a bit then go with a reduced setup

As far as your current axles do you know what manufacture they are? Tamiya wideco robbe rc4wd etc etc. with that and a picture of it. I may be able to identify it and help you out
