Hoarder Special!

OK guys, over the last few months I have been slowly collecting(hoarding) enough parts to build another Tamiya chassis(or two). Some of the parts I have purchased second hand or traded for, and some have been given to me by fellow members(THANK YOU!). I assembled said parts a while back but really hadn't decided what I wanted to build until yesterday. Anyhow, I am going to try my luck at building another Canadian Kenworth. This one will be the late 50's early 60's vintage similar to a 925 but most likely with the heavy duty flat top steal fenders because it is modeled after the off highway versions. As per my usual the body will be all hand fabricated and TIG welded aluminum. Here's what I accomplished this afternoon/evening(not much lol).

Thanks guys. Today's update... The cab is made up of 5 pieces total but is now all blobbed together. I see myself doing a little more filling and filing before I call it good but it's going in the right direction. It was definitely a challenge to get the roof shape close to correct. I don't think it's bang on or anything but I also don't have a 1:1 close by to compare. Hopefully it is good enough to make people realize what I was going for.

Thanks very much guys. I haven't decided what type of fenders and hood to make. I will have to think about it a little more before I make more progress.

Thanks Jason, I use a scroll saw but only to cut the windows close to shape. The final finish is done with some careful filing using different shaped files.

Cool, Amazing work! I always wanted a scroll saw, sounds like the right tool for the job. Looking forward to seeing whats next with this build.

It's not really the best tool for the job as it gets "stuck" often and starts bouncing the part around like a jack hammer. A little grease on the blade helps with the sticking but adds a mess you have to clean off before welding. I don't have any cnc equipment so it does the job for now and it only cost $40 at a swapmeet.

Try bee's wax it works good and is not that messy.

Another great build reg! I'll be watching. I would definitely try the bee's wax, Travis got me on it after I was ready to throw one of my saws out because it wouldn't cut aluminum worth a crap, now it works great!

That's a great idea guys, thanks. I use reagent alcohol for machining, threading and occasionally for cutting but it washes off ink and I am only tracing the window openings on with a Sharpie. No ink, no idea where to cut!lol It will be interesting to see if bee's wax contaminates the welds or if it burns off. That is one thing very nice about using alcohol. It just evaporates in no time at all and leaves no residue. When I use grease I have to wash the parts before welding. I guess there is the perfect lube for every sticky situation...

Well I played hooky from customer jobs today and took a shop day for myself. I have been wanting to work on Scrappy( my nickname for this truck since it's chassis is a pile of hoarded spare parts) for a few days but just haven't had the time. I figured today was Sunday and my shop is my church so here's what I got into.

I started out by making a front bumper and mount.




The front of the cab was too wide and the space between the windows too large. I hummed and hawed about cutting the cab or living with it but in the end sad the "F" word followed by "it" and chucked it in the saw. I split it down the middle and carefully removed about 1/8".



I then stitched it back up.





Once I was happy enough with that I got back on with what I had intended to accomplish which was welding up the bumper and fenders.

Here's one fender welded up and the other still in pieces.





This took some time and patience but they turned out OK.




Once they were welded up I could figure out roughly where they needed to be placed. I made some adjustments and welded on the mounts. It's starting to look like a truck now!
