Lightbulb Benny's R Model Mack

SoooooooooooooooMy good friend Benny decided he wanted to give me the Oh So Delightful job of doing a build off of a "shapeways" cab.......FML...... He wanted to make a replica of his Fathers truck with as much possible detail that could be done to it so I started with the tedious body work and moved on from there.....

PS I dont care what anyone says, there isnt enough primer you could put on these cabs to get them right without sacrificing quality and or detail..... only way to do it..... is to sand, sand, sand, and be PATIENT lol..... overall looking back at the hours spent on the body, im feeling real good about the build...

enjoy...

here is how I got the body with 3-4 coats of primer on it..... oyu can still tell how rough it is....

after giving it a nice sand and a shot of a reg base green I had lying around, I was able to spot more imperfections and primer it again...

After working out 99.9% of the Imperfections I gave it a few coats of the traditional Mack green...

More pics and LOADS more details to come, I designed a true to scale and look 6 spoke mack dayton for this rig along with mirrors and full interior....

stay tuned

nice work! Its a shame that the shapeways cab is for the superliner. they should make a variation for the R model too, with the different styling cues.

Shapeways does make an R model Mack hood& cab with or without opening doors and a superliner Cab & R700 hood 2 styles. There are also 2 types of tanks and lengths round or square long & short. Look for CAA52 on there site . Ed

On a super liner the cowl is longer . That is the only difference in it and a R cab

Bingo! The cowl where the sloped part of the hood meets is an insert on the real truck. It is cut in on the r u and dm models. The super liner is straight. Just a little Mack trivia

I only been around R,U,and DM's and driven 2 of them and did the body werk on 1 of them . Soooo , yes the cowl vent is missing . I'll take a closer look at the super at the end of the month .

It has a cowl vent but the super liner cowl is rounded at the corners and the hood (when closed)goes all the way to the outer edge much like a pete hood.

OK , I looked . the differences are subtle . For the purposes of modeling the cab passes for both cept the cowl vent . obviously the hoods are different thus the change in the cab where the hood meets it (cowl) . From manufacture stand point , you would just change 1 or 2 panels for different models . Not arguing here , I just found it odd from the way I see things with what Brian said .

Truck is look in good. Yes that 3D texture is pretty harsh!

when I built my 3D printed Macks I had to notch out the passenger side of the cowl so I could get the air cleaner pipe thru the hood. I used the late 70s style twin tube air cleaner and needed the room for both tubes. I think I also had to enlarge the hood opening as well?

I think there were about 5 different cowls for the R model cab depending on the model and what hood was being used.

R
DM
U
superliner

all have a different cowl panels

if you ever see a RS700L Mack with a v12 under the hood look at the cowl. it will have extension panels added to the cowl.

Great work mate.
Your 3d printing in PLA or ABS?
I heard PLA bio-degrades over time? Is that true?
