Re: Trommel Build
Spring blocks and new rollers are machined. The initial spring setup was crude but was helpful in getting an idea what the movement was going to be like. Determined a stronger rate spring was needed to handle more weight in the hopper. Also added a heavy counter weight to the shaker motor to increase agitation due to the stiffer springs. Wired up and painted...Works well, Test video attached.

Re: Trommel Build
Wow. That came out beautiful.
Are the footers on that height adjustable, or do you need to level the site first?

Re: Trommel Build
Thanks Jim, didn't really plan that I was just setting it down on my way to the barn and grabbed the spray can from the garage before I painted and decided to snap a before shot.. before grabbing it again. Worked out well I guess.

Thank you, that's a good observation. I didn't make them adjustable at all as I figured the whole structure needed to be mounted to a platform which it is ( plywood base) and the concrete blocks add enough weight to the whole thing to keep it still. It tends to vibrate quite a bit from the shaker motor. So I'll have to level the site where it will be set up.

Re: Trommel Build
Jason,
I just watched the video again and went thru the build thread, very cool! Did you start with a scale/plan in mind when you drew it up? Do you plan to park dump trucks under it, or separate the piles with concrete barriers and then load out with a wheel loader or possible use roll off dumps? How tall is it overall and if you are scale I assume you are trying to match the bruder and tamiya stuff? I'm just trying to figure out a few of those things before I try to hack something together. Did you consider a jaw crusher for part of this setup? I wonder how hard it would be to build something in that scale and have it perform well? Thanks! Re: Trommel Build
Jim, The first thing i wanted to do was make sure that i could dump into the hopper without any issue so measured the width of buckets on my machines. Then yes like you mentioned, i wanted to be able to park trucks under the drum or just use the front loader to move material out. Thats why its so tall at 23" to the top of the bin and 30" wide on the outer legs. I plan to build conveyors to stick under the drum as well for stock piling...Havent got that far yet though. One thing i wish i wouldve done was make the shaker bin angled so a screen could be layed on top to catch any really large clumps. I may address that in the future if i find its a real problem. The passage from the bin to the shaker pan is smaller so that would keep anything too large from going into the drum anyway..
A crusher would be cool, Prob not too difficult. I did look at a few online before starting this but wanted to sort by size because i was interested in building a road using asphalt grindings i have..Thats what got me started down this path.. I try to scale everything to 1/15 to work with the Bruder and Tamiya stuff. Heres a few poser shots with Bruder and Ertl 1/16 stuff.

Re: Trommel Build
Very nice job. The weathered look paint gives it an added touch.
The sound recording around your shop sounds like an interesting idea. |

Re: Trommel Build
Nice job on the trommel!
Off topic, are you going to just paint the mdf walls in your shop? Have done the same in my new shop so just curious, I'm about to paint my mdf boards this weekend. |

Thanks! Will do.

I posted a vid link above with the sound. Ended up taking sound clips from YouTube videos of electric motors, locomotive and a rock crusher and mixed them together. Kalle, thanks. I had thought about painting the walls last year when I built that room but never got to that point yet. Lightening up the walls would be nice to brighten up the place. What color you thinking? Spray or roll? White would show the least amount of texture on the mdf.

I'm going to paint them in a white color, I will use a roller to paint. It will lighten up the room quite a lot I think. I can send you some pics when I'm done, I'll send you a pm. |
