Mack R Model - By Izzy
Hello everyone, it's been a long time since I posted much of anything. Been away messing with a CJ2A for over a year and ready to get back to Mini Trucks.
Picked up a Globe kit and some Shapeways items over xmas, and the last of it arrived last night. Table is a good mess, as I am also prepping for the event on the 20th in Lebenon http://www.rctruckandconstruction.com http://boonefairgrounds.com/calendar/ https://www.facebook.com/events/153379245293581/?ti=as Signed up with flickr, we'll see how they do on image hosting https://flic.kr/p/23jGJzT |

Re: Mack R Model - By Izzy
I'll be watching! I don't see a lot of Mack builds. D@m things were uncomfortable to drive, but went more places than the Kwhoppers, &/or Pete's combined, WITHOUT getting stuck. They also last a LOT longer. Those things were built tough & made to last, (IMO) In My Opinion.

Re: Mack R Model - By Izzy
I know you'll be using everything from frame to drivetrain etc on the Mack build. Will the globe body & body accessories be offered int the BST section, or do you have future plans fir them?

This ought to be a cool build. Nice to see my bench isn't the only one that looks "used" in pictures! Which hood are you using the 6cyl or the V8?

Re: Mack R Model - By Izzy
I was thinking of doing another Transfer build later this year with the doner globe parts.
As for the build, spent several hours debating on body/hood height versus wheel size versus axel placement. Result is that standard tamiya wheels are too large. Therefor cannot set hood at proper height. Also with these older aftermarket aluminum rims I have the track width at the front is too wide. This body must match scale dims and therefore be more proper for a 1970 ish or earlier frame and wheel sizing. The accessories I purchased with the cab are Aussie style air cleaners (tall stacks and both sides) so a high cab and hood looks to fit those details better. R model with a high hood to wheel pic that I like https://goo.gl/images/L2Jupn https://goo.gl/images/QBtzxi https://goo.gl/images/hnN3Jx |

I am working on making a few sets of cast bronze/aluminum 2 piece split rims that might suite your build very well. I am hoping to have something to show off here in 2-3 weeks.

Re: Mack R Model - By Izzy
Sorry Izzy, I just re-read your post and realized you said you already have some old aluminum wheels.
I also spent alot of time trying to find the best combination of height on the body and unless someone makes some smaller diameter tires Im not sure there is a easy way to achieve that perfect look. Its definitely possible to narrow the front end if you want to go that far. I'd like to see pics on how you approach this and the outcome. |

Re: Mack R Model - By Izzy
I helped with the design details with shapeways builder CAA52 to make the Mack spoke wheels. I gave the specs of the stock tamiya tire and such and made sure that the first prototype wheels worked and looked the part. im not sure what the stock tamiya tire scales out to be a 22.5 or 24.5? I think the tamiya budd and the shapeway spoke wheel was closer to a scale 22.5. but I cant recall the exact specifics of it.

Cab sits nice on rails. Hood pivoted on front hole of shackle mount. Front of frame cut back 1/4" and down 3/8" Cab and sleeper not yet anchored. Front axel shifted forward where it sits just in front of center rivet pin. Shapeways tanks look really tiny with the truck height. Definitely an Aussie look to it. |

Re: Mack R Model - By Izzy
Lmackattack, if I can pull off something as nice as yours I'll be great full and ecstattic.
Nice bud rims are probably in the future. Figured to buy necessities first. Maybe low pros would be a better diameter for the look but the the rim would look all wrong. |

When you said Mack R model, my first thought was the Mad Max 2 / Road Warrior, Mack R600 Coolpower that he unhitches from the 'Vermin have inherited the earth' trailer and uses with the tanker at the end. http://www.madmaxmovies.com/mad-max-...600-coolpower/

Re: Mack R Model - By Izzy
I do have some fuel tanks with integrated battery box, but I think your cab sits too low compared to mine, but I may be able to tweak the design to make up for it. I will see if I can find some more pictures otherwise they should be posted on my build thread.

Re: Mack R Model - By Izzy
Thanks guys for the interest and the comments.
After scouring for photos, the cab is about right for some trucks and others the cab is higher yet. And the shapeways tanks are spot on for the shorter travel trucks but seen plenty with the round style as well. So in all I was intending to do a rubber duck but I like the high rise style air cleaners so she will Bute a mutt. A high red of just fun. Oh and thanks guys for re posting with photos attached. I have no way to edit the url on my phone and too lazy to dig out the laptop just yet. Starus - cab mounted, sleeper mounted, 4:1 mounted, drives mounted, frame cut, rear cross member and flaps arranged and started to figure an MFU in place. |

Re: Mack R Model - By Izzy
Some refrence details on the long and tall hood 700 series macks.
the Rubber duck Truck was a 1977 RS700L (Mack Western) This model ended in 1978 after the Mack Superliner was introduced. The RS/RL700s were aimed at the western truck market with the use of much more Aluminum components for weight savings and engines much larger than a standard east coast R model. A standard East coast R model was basicly all Steel nose to tail and powered by Mack diesels. The early western Macks (1968-1973) RS/RL700s have the cab sit lower on the frame like eastern macks. after 1973 the sat up higher off the frame and the hood is taller for better cooling and larger displacement diesels . You will notice Izzys hood is taller than the standard R model hood on my Green 6 wheel dumptruck. His hood is also longer. Western macks used aluminum fuel tanks without the indent step that eastern R models had. you could get the Western fuel tanks in 50gal all the way up to 126 Gallon. Only the 126 gallon tanks used 3 straps and the rest were all duel straps. Mack westerns also had a industry standard frame width with straight rails. they were slightly wider than a East coast Frame and did not spread up near the engine like east coast Macks do. if you need any help just ask as I own the real thing

Re: Mack R Model - By Izzy
Lmackattack, awesome info. I bet I have a mixed bag of goodies then. I'll have to read your explanaturn a couple times to soak it all in.
Hopefully it won't stress anyone since it not building a proper version, but it do like the old series mack's. Progress, fitted up and paint at Travis' https://flic.kr/p/FhDx75 https://flic.kr/p/FsJoJd |
