RCP,
Why are you using a lead acid battery? 10 NiMH C cells are much lighter and give you as much capacity. I actually use lithium packs in some of my trucks the they are even lighter and save space. Trucker Al

So the sun is out, the truck is running(but not finished), and I'm thinking of shooting some video. What resolution should I film it with and what is the easiest way to post it?

looks awsome i think i would run two 7.2 bateries together to make 14.4 like we did in my dozer save on the weight and then you could make a lil detriot motor to cover the batteries

Wow have to say the paint really changes the looks from the plain old steel look. I love the stance of it but also agree that an engine under that hood would put it off the charts. Great work.

Awesome! Even your boat is made from aluminum! And you say you don't have the same level of metal fab skills. The dump truck turned out great! Incredible work.

Thanks guys! There is a lot of detail work left to do but I have a harder time motivating myself with the small stuff.

Another great build Reg.
We Vancouver Island folks will have to plan a weekend event before the Albernie show for a meet and greet. My excavator can load your truck without and problems. What scale did you build it ? We tend to build in 1/14 scale... Looking forward to putting your truck to work.. greg |

The truck is about 1/10 scale. Let me know when you guys are planning something and I'll see what I can do. It's not that much fun having a truck like this without something to load it.

Here's a short vid of the truck hauling three shovels full of wet sand. My battery died pretty much right away so I didn't get a chance to film another better video. I haven't done anything new to the truck lately but hopefully soon. I think I need to replace the 540 motor with a more powerfull one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBBcM...yer_detailpage

Looking good!
It's nice to see a scratch built model under power and doing what it was built for. Now the truck needs a friend like an old steam shovel with an electric conversion like the ones they used on the island here for road building way back when. ![]() |

I hope to build a Cat 955K(1967) track loader next because that's what we use to load the real truck at home here. It's only 6 years newer than the truck(1961) so it will be close in era. I haven't been around any shovels so I wouldn't know where to start building one.HAHA I wish I was rich and retired(but not any older) so that I could build more of these things... I like logging equipment too...

I couldn't have summed it up any better myself ![]() The 955K sounds like a good match for the truck. I'm looking forward to seeing that build in the future! Last edited by TheMachinist; 05-09-2011 at 11:17 PM. |

For some steam shovel footage see chapter 3 http://video.pbs.org/video/1747929120
reminds me of my favorite book "Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel" They were definately animated in operation! Later, Neil#2 aka doodlebug. |
