Here is something to shoot for. This is a "beam" or a "rail" lowboy the deck is just frame rails that are set in narrow, you drive the excavator over the rails straddling them, the whole thing sits lower this way.

Should have known to look on his channel. Love his vids. That thing would probably be pretty simple to make too. Much easier to hide a winch than a screwdrive lift.
Let me put on my lab coat here and talk some theory on the physics with the model: If the weight of the 850D excavator is supported entirely by the trailer/jeep, you would need to add more weight to the truck to efficiently pull the load correct? Or add a weight box to the extended neck? |

the idea is to uniformly distribute the weight on all axles including the tractor . placement of the 5th wheel is crucial ( hence the sliding 5th wheel plate ) Here in PA ( last time I moved a permit load ) , we're alowed 20,000# per axle at a given distance appart ( I gotta find my PA DOT book ) . If you look at the position of the 5th wheels on the aspen set up ,it transfers enough weight to the tractor .

Very cool video, Joe.
PFB, the weight of anything you haul is not entirely supported by the trailer. Even with jeeps, some of the weight is still transfered to the tractor's 5th wheel, and that's key. Unless the lead jeep is pulled from a drawbar, like a wagon, the tractor will still have weight on it. Then you would need a weight box on the tractor. You probably would need less weight on the tractor, then one might think. Say something like 15 to 20 pounds of weight on the tractor's 5th wheel would probably be enough to pull 80 pounds gross. Depending how freewheeling the wheels are, and how stiff the tires might be.

A very kool channel indeed Nathan, I've learned a great deal of different techniques to operating equip from his numerous vids. He always has the camera in the right position to see the action, they're always entertaining to watch.

Europe tends to like to have the load entirely on the trailer / bogey set-up. They also like double axels rather than single axels (two short axels with a total of 4 wheels). I believe this has to do with manuverability - with euro styling they have shorter turn radii and also use steerable axels whereas here were all about length - we got plenty of acerage..... hence the large cars LOL!

I think it is a **** of a start to a cool build. The truck looks beefy just like a heavy haul should. I think everybody is on the right track it just depends on what spot in the hemosphere you want your trailer replicated after. Different areas have different requirements for weight and over the years some very smart inventers have designed equipment that is capable of hauling the weight while staying with in the weight requirements. You could use a goldhofer which is like a dolly that is pulled by a truck or multiple trucks or you can build a trailer like one of the photos used above. The 2 being hauled by Bills and Precision Heavy haul are the style we use most. It would really be something to see someone accomplish one of these. If you are interested I have thousands of photos I can supply. On these trailer types the main deck carries the load. Each end is connected to a neck which is supported by the jeep in the front and a dolly in the rear. The point where the neck connects to the dolly is centered between the two groups of axles on the dolly. On the other end the front neck is connected to the jeep. This point is centered between the axles on the truck and the jeep acording to the weight requirements. This being said the truck will have weight on it to enable it to have traction enough to pull the load. So as long as you build the load bearing points correctly on the trailer the weight will be disributed evenly.

One thing to consider, on grade's or off road site's, I have heard of 980's & 988's pushing the trailer, to help the truck out and not squirt the driveline out.
This is worst case senerio, but at the show's, it's nice to have friend's help out with that "BMF" load! That's big monster frustrator for the clean version! The old Gibbon's & Reed Pit in Kaysville, Utah, had close to 20% grade going up into the pit. Cheer's, Neil. |
