Great work! Very impressive build. What kind of glue do you use for the Al and brass? Do you need to do any prep work to the material before you glue it?

This is definetly one of the top builds going on, the time it would take even working daily for longer periods is asthonishing. So keep up the great work and I will stay tuned for the additional ...... years to finish it....

A little update. I haven't had too much time lately between vacation, work and a huge ice storm.
I mainly worked on the drive train of the carrier. I bought a 540 motor with a reduction case attached (No, I did not make it myself, i am getting lazy), which fits perfectly.
then i did a test run and it worked great with the 2 speed auxiliary gearbox, but it lacked a low low speed, it just went too fast for moving it fully rigged.
So I decided to add a gear box which I bolted to the existing one, giving the option of an extra 1 in 4 reduction and a total of 4 speeds. That should do it! It is almost ready, most of the parts are there.

Gearbox is ready. It provides me with the Low-Low I need for moving the thing fully rigged and also with a few faster speeds. There is a factor 10 difference between the lowest and the highest gear.

I made a short video of the first test drive. It is going in Low-Low with the motor running at full rpm's

Wow that is really cool to watch. I don't think I ever saw a 1:1 version turning that tight. That really works nice.

Thanks for the comment, but there is some play for sure and the 2 rear axles are a bit out of line. They steer a bit too much to one side, but I will adjust that later.
Now I have to fix the motor in place, it was sitting loose in the carrier!

I am not very good with RC, but it would be nice to have it remote controlled, then I could drive it at full speed. In the highest gear it would go the 1/1 equivalent of about 12Mph. I am thinking of making a module that would fit in the upper in the space of the winches. These can be taken out and then there is quite a bit of space..

After I finished the gearbox I put it all together.
Although there are still a million details to be done it is time to work on the boom now. Exciting!

Exiting, I'll say!!!! It's a rush to see a well designed and engineered piece of machinery work for the first time, isn't it? Great work so far. Just unbeleivable. Dan

While waiting for the AL sheets to arrive I made the 235-ton hook block. I had very little (none!) information to help me and I had to somehow get some measurements from pictures. And now it’s finished I think it is not quite right. I might change the whole thing again.

I also made a first mock-up of the boom, just to try out if it works. I am using 0.032” Al sheet. I bend the lower part and the upper part separately and then glued the two together. It seems to work and it is quite strong.

Even if you're not sure about that 235 ton block, the craftsmanship on it is just beautiful.

That's better:

I made the block about 1/4" shorter and now the proportions are better. I am happy now!
