Default New Transmission required Wedico 740 Dumper

Hi Guys,
I looking for a new Power option for my 740 dumper.
I need a geared motor that will do about 600-700rpm and have enough grunt to drive when loaded.
The original gearbox will do 500rpm, 1000rpm and 2000rpm in third gear but I'm looking for a single speed option. Any Ideas?
Thanks Paul

How about a Dewalt cordless drill motor and gearbox?
I have no idea what space is available in your 740 though
Cheers

I was thinking along those lines too. You can buy a cheap brand new 12-18 volt drill for around $40 here(sometimes less). I use them in my Euclid(single speed) and Kenworth(2 speed) and they work very well. I doubt you could stall either one without breaking something else. There may not be enough room though I guess. The price is certainly right!

Thanks Stu,
I wonder if anyone has a couple of pictures of one of these drills striped down.
I had a look in the local hardware shop today and for about $50 I can get one but not sure how far to take it apart.

Here's a picture of an 18v drill stripped down. I don't remember if this was a Campbell Hausfeld or a Black and Decker. It is the largest one I have seen so far. The motor on this one is quite long and is much bigger than a 550. The single speed that I used in my Euc is probably 1.5 inches shorter and the one in my KW is somewhere in between. I changed the motor on the single speed because it was only a 540 and spun quite fast. The pinions are pressed on making motor swaps easy if you aren't happy with the speed or torque. Hope this helps.

Thanks Reg,
in the mean time I have seen this on Servonaut's page.
http://www.servonaut.de/shop/product...gm42u1425.html
The only problem is the Servonaut has an 8mm output shaft and I can't find a carden joint to suit the 8mm to 4mm shaft sizes
I will have another drive to the hardware store today and have a look at the range and sizes of the 12v drills.

Hi Chris,
I had a look at that but it is only 10mm so it will only leave 1mm and would tear out before I could blink
I had thought if I can't find a carden to do the job I could try and hold the whole motor in the lathe and turn it down.

This arrived this week after modifying the output shaft to 4mm it works great, heaps of power and would recommend it for other 740dumpers. Some mods are required but its worth it.
I will post a video later.

A better powerplant to get you going again... till the front pinion & crown blows on front axle... have you had trouble with that yet Paul?

I have be done the transplant, not sure if the battery needs more power to drive this motor at full potential. Here is a video of it.
More testing to come.

Hmmm, was the new motor struggling to drive the Cat out of that hole, or were the tires slipping? What voltage are you running on that motor? Seems to be set up for 12 volts. No idea of the gear reduction, but at 1,425 rpm, it seems to be about right, after considering the reduction in the axles as well.

No tyres slipping, running a 10 pack of aa 2700ma batteries @12volts
The reduction on the diffs are 15 to 1

The wdc Buehler motor is about 4000 to 4500 nominal speed & 2nd gear is 11:1, which would equal about 360 to 410 RPM. This motor is more than twice the nominal torque of the one you currently have and should travel about a bit faster than what 2nd gear was.

I was thinking of putting a 14v lipo in it but not sure if the Wedico electronics can handle the extra voltage. But yes the flat ground speed is good.

14v lipo is 4s, correct? which is 16.8v @full charge.

With the space savings of no more motor/trans combo, maybe you could fit a 4s lipo & a 10cell NiMH?

It might help to put an esc on your hyd pump so it's not running all the time, cutting in on the current flow.

It sounds like your motor choice is laboring quite hard, more reduction is what's needed. How hot or warm does the esc get after a minute or two of run time?

Thanks Joe,
Are you thinking of two power supplies?
I have a BMA on the pump already, so the pump only runs when required.
The unit still has the standard Wedico electrics as supplied, so I will need to dig them out and try it again, then test for the temp

I'd be curious to see what kind of current this motor is drawing, under load, or when it stalls. That could tell you if it's a case of your battery pack not being able to supply enough current to the motor, when it needs it, or if the motor is simply underpowered for the application. Doing the math, at 41 watts (rated) and running on 12 volts, it should only draw 3 amps, which makes me think the motor is actually a little on the weak side.....
