1:12 SL-400 Truck Crane
Well I guess I've made enough progress to start a build thread for this project.
First a little background on the 1:1: The original belongs to the company that I work for and is a one of a kind. SL-400 stands for Street Legal 400 ton capacity. When it was completed in the early '90s it was the largest crane able to be moved around California without removing the upper works. It can self-erect with upto 185,000 lbs of counter weight and 280 ft of boom. The max counterweight is 210,000 lbs, but it requires an assist crane for this because the stack is too high for it to swing over. It also has a fixed jib that can be upto 90 ft long. OK enough talking, here's a picture of the 1:1 And here are two pictures of the progress I've made on the 1:12 scale model. First the bottom, 2 main, and one of the two upper counter weights that make up the 185k stack. These will be filled with about 115 lbs of lead. Here is the rear half of the carrier frame sitting on the outrigger boxes, with one of the outrigger beams in front. |

Wow that thing is huge. You must be planning to run solid tires with that much weight!

Thanks for the welcome and the comments guys!

I'm not sure what to do for axles though. I don't think that the standard truck axles will be wide enough or strong enough. Anyone have a suggestion? |

Re: 1:12 SL-400 Truck Crane
looking at the size of that maybe something from a mobility scooter would be suitable?

Re: 1:12 SL-400 Truck Crane
I'm not worried about the weight so much as the axle width. The 1:1 does have a pick and carry chart and I could see having to rig up and then move it into position at a meet or something, but when it is moved under load it actually gets four more sets of duals on the rear outrigger box to take the load. However, the outsides of the drive tires are at 10" and I dont know if Tamya axles can be extended that far? I hadn't thought of a mobility scooter, I'll have to check into that.
