I originally was going to make my own collector rings but found one that suited.
Looking at your picture; Is the brass soldered to the aluminum? I've never tried to do that before.

The rings are brass and the wires are soldered to this ring directly (inside). the pins are steel with wires soldered to them. I used the torch for that! All the rest is plastic.

.
Oh, did you mean the frame?
I glued the Al and brass together, but for strength a 1/4' bolt connects the brass with the center ring, a similar setup like pre-stressed concrete.
I like to use AL, because it is light and easy to work with and i found very good glue. But i don't rely completely on the glue; I mostly add bolts.
i made the outrigger beams from steel, because I wanted a lot of strength there.
I plan to make the telescopic boom from AL too. it should work and it will flex a lot more than steel. And i would like to achieve that effect.
