Thumbs up Re: CAT 14M Motor Grader

Ari - welcome --- where have you been hiding??

Your machining skills are great....I like the front axel set up... And the multi point backers are sweet.....

Are you scaling this all from photos and measurements? Or are you engineering and using the 1:1 for inspiration---- either way it's up there with a few of the the greats........

For measurments I´m using Norscot 1:50 14M diecast model witch I hope is accurate enought, and also I have some 14M brochures witch have some measurments. I also have many photos of it.
Sadly I havent been able to take any photos of it myself.
I wish have one in my yard witch I could take measurments and maybe do some road work also...

Wow. I'm at a loss for words! I wish I had half the talent you do in your little pink alone! Your machine work looks incredible! The front axle is a work of art. Amazing. This will be one build to keep an eye on for sure. 5 star thread!

Today I made the housing that covers the frame in front of the cab.
Here is some pictures of making it:

There are no words left to describe this build. Making your own body shells like photo-etched brass is completely over the top.

Nifty seeing how you planned the cut so it bent into the right shape... did ya do it on the 1st try?

I never could draw or inivision in 3D before, likely the reason why I get frustrated with scratchbuilding. You however are doing a fantastic job!

What's its current weight?

First I made the part out of cardboard, bend it and try fit it to it´s place. Then I took the measurments of that, and made the program for the milling machine.
And it was not successful on the first time, I actually made a new one today, the one I show you earlier was too wide.

Weight of the grader so far is 5,5 kg

Today I made the roof side sections, witch where difficult to make.
What makes them hard to make is that the other side is straight, and the other is curvy like an airfoil. To be honest I´m not totally satisfied how they turn out, but maybe some bondo and paint will do the trick

I don't think it looks too bad. Don't be so hard on yourself.
Elliot, Bondo is a cheap 2part autobody filler that can be sanded once it has hardened.
