Default Do YOU wear your safety glasses??

Hey all.

I just had a major near miss in my little work space tonight...... I was doing some wiring, prepping some magnet wire. Had a little bit too much solder on the iron and while tinning the end, the wire flicked off the iron and I felt the solder hit my cheek maybe 1/2 from my eye
Happened so fast, no burn on the cheek, just bounced off but could you imagine hot solder hitting a moist eyeball!
Safety glasses are mandatory site wide at work and I have no problem with wearing them. I use at home when drilling, cutting, hammering....you get my point. But while doing simple wiring? That magnet wire is hard enough to see without safety glasses but.
I might have to make safety glasses mandatory in my home work space.

I wear mine. I wasn't able to find them today while working at extending my trailers so I used my welding helmet. It worked great.

Cool Re: Do YOU wear your safety glasses??

I have a nice set of Remington Shades that I wear when doing such projects. They're supposed to be for use with fire-arms at the gun-range, but I originally got them for driving. Can't beat 'em for use on the road (or as safety equipment).

Mario, were you wearing your beer goggles instead?

All joking aside I'm glad you didn't solder your eyeball! Been burnt on the head and face before while MIG welding under a car and it sucks! Another safety tip while MIG welding...Don't wear fleece...

I only wear them when doing some grinding or similar with metal.
I have an electronic engineering background and was taught to solder pretty much to milspec ratings, theres basically never enough solder molten on what i'm doing to do me any damage.

I wear glasses, but I really need to invest in prescription safety glasses. When playing dodgeball I get hit in the face pretty much every game, which normally sends one of my lens flying.

I wear mine but still manage to get something in my eyes. In fact this past Sunday while cutting the pipe for the toilet flange in the floor, I had a tiny piece of metal hit me in the left eye just off set of the center of the pupil. Had to see the eye DR yesterday to remove. They used a needle to get it out as it was imbedded, and then a small battery powered grinder to get the rust out. If I had not gone to the DR, I would be a lot worse off then I was .

I had metal removed from my eyes 3 times, once while not wearing safety glasses n twice while wearing them. Once removed with a needle twice with a scalpel. It SUVs and I always wear my safety glasses now more then I probably need too, but I never wanna experience that again. Oh and Steve I have learned the hard way about welding with a fleece sweatshirt on....its a biggggg no no.

Always have my on in the shop. You need your eyes having to ask for help to get to the doctors office because you had a gas flash back in the eyes is not an enjoyable thing. Andrew

Well worth wearing almost all of the time. I do now after a few close calls myself.

Well, I can actually say I have had solder in my eye! And with the flux to go with it!
Back in my aprenticeship days when I did not know any better and safety was not the priority it is today. Was soldering some springs on an electric motor when it let go and landed in and around my right eye. PAIN WAS UNBELIEVABLE! Stumbled to the washrooms and started washing it out. The foreman saw me dive through the corridors and followed me. In the car and off to emergency room for the next 7 hours! Cleaning, washing, scraping (like fingernails on a blackboard!) and lots of scans. ANd one lucky sparky who can still see today, well when I get out the glasses.

SO I AM VERY PRO Safety Glasses whether prescription or not

^^^^ Same here, I have perscription safety glasses and wear side sheilds on my regular glasses. I've had multiple surgeries on my eyes, I don't need to screw up and loose them now.

To me, not wearing safety glasses feels just as odd as not wearing a seat-belt in the car. I used to not use them very much to now I wear them all the time.
