Thx, Izzy. I bought 3/16" dia by 1.5" usable length off ebay. Was the best price for 100 at a buck each. Designing everything in cad. I wish i had a scanner that could scan something this small accurately...But then it may be just as much work and time to redesign the components for my needs and fix the model after scanned? Who knows, not familiar with scanners yet, I just CAD whatever i need.

the fact that your printing every thing is too cool!!!

Thanks man, I did originally print the pins for the track and they worked fine but figured one of the most wearable parts should be metal. I may reproduce more parts out of metal as i need them and they wear, but this a great way to prototype a model. Wish I had Steve's machining abilities.

Hi what kind of printer are you using ?

Search, I wrote a thread all about my stuff somewhere here.

Someone asked me about the strength of the model when its done so i grabbed a scrap piece from this build (lower chassis part) and took these pics to share.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/--kQLMUytV9A/VSHr2eU0JkI/AAAAAAAACeA/eODKcquC0tM/w1207-h905-no/2015-04-05%2B20.22.41.jpg

Im 200lbs, and am balancing myself with my hand on the counter while my wife took this shot.

These parts made of ABS can be very sturdy, as you can see ( this part is not even constructed with the most dense filling that can be utilized). Of course not as resistant to wear as metal but like i mentioned i will use metal in certain areas, and would prefer to build the whole thing out of steel, but dont have the energy for that and wanted to do a full 3D printed build of some sort and this happened to be it. Atleast this way I can cut the build time in half and do something not yet done.. Anyone seen a 3D printed Dozer yet?

Neil, Thanks for the link. I saw that a while ago. It was made just to be used on the Ipad I think. Id be interested in knowing how small of details it could grab.. I still think affordable laser scanners are a bit off, but becoming more consumer based due to 3D printing. Ill wait for one of those, but even still having to hollow out the model to be used mechanically would be more headache than its worth..Unless your modeling people and stationary things.:) Just my thoughts..

Have a few dimensions to go back and adjust and reprint on the motor housings, then should be ready to finish cutting the track roller shafts (24- 4mm) and assemble the undercarriage.

ABS i use is about 30$ lbs. Maybe about 500.00 which is mostly electronics, not including the ripper parts, which is not designed yet.

That is looking great!

Thank you

Its starting to look like something. Theres a delay in production due to some printer repairs going on. Hope to have the left side undercarriage finished this weekend.

What's its weight at now? Will it be all electric with linear actuators?

Using this Izzybilt dozer with twin Firgelli L12-30-100-12-S on the lift is working sweet! The blade lift is quick & powerful.

Joe, each side of the undercarriage is almost 2 lbs, So im estimating the total built weight should be near 12-15 lbs. A tad over what i figured scale weight to be, 9.1 lbs..If i figured correctly.
This will be an all electric build. Ive got a set of 100mm L16 Firgellis to use on the blade, and a handful of L12s for experimenting with.

Very nice finish. Is it that nice straight from the printer?

No, theres a a bit of post print sanding and treatment to get it looking somewhat smooth like it is. Thanks

Quick update.

Almost have all the parts finished. Slowely getting there. Just waiting on some hardware and will start assembling. Blade is filled with lead to give it some weight and blade tilt will be fixed. Ripper will be static until i get around to replacing some printed parts with metal and aquire the electronics to make it functional. For now it will just look cool.. hopefully.

Thanks for the compliments. Got a little further today with testing and part fitment. Im digging the way its looking, but I realized after the first test of the track motors that they are lame (77 oz torque/51 RPM @ 12v= not good) and had to order another set with some better power. That means back to the drawing board to redesign the motor mounts and corresponding parts. Heres a few more pics of how its looking.

Wow, beatifull Great Job any idea a price Range after done..

Rough figure on cost with shipping
2 sabertooth 2x12-150.00, 2 Figelli L16 100mm actuators 150.00, 2 motors - 85.00, 100 track pins and e clips - 120.00, misc hardware - 35.00, ABS filament- 80.00, paint - 40.00... My time - priceless. :)
Total if I don't need anything else and not including radio gear & battery- 660.00.

Also wanted to add I think my estimated scale weight was way off, it should be like 100 lbs.. I think I can add enough weight inside to get it near 25 lbs easy, which should do the trick. It's heavier than you'd think already.

Sounds about the same cost as my Bruder dozer conversions(same electronics basically) only the ABS cost is swapped with Aluminum and the track pins are K1 chain. Building this stuff isn't as cheap as some people imagine and the time involved to design and build the parts adds up. You are doing a fantastic job on it though and I can't wait to see it pushing dirt!:D

Looks good with the color on. Did you use some kind of primer on the blade to keep the paint on when starting to push dirt?

Cooper
04-25-2015, 04:31 PM
Wow looks killer!! Same question about priming, I assume you were using petroleum based cat paint? Was wondering about it melting the abs. I've never painted any 3d parts, but plan on in future, thanks for sharing, your doing an amazing job!!!! Can't wait to see it pushing

JDH429
04-25-2015, 05:04 PM
Yes I definitely primed everything with Rustoleum Self Etching primer. After doing some scratch tests on ABS, i found the Self Etch Primer held up the best. But Krylon primer Ive used many times before without any issue. I felt better about the Etching primer on this build being everything was going to see abrasion....But its a dozer, its not supposed to stay looking pretty for ever. If the paint wears off, im fine with that. :) I also topcoated everything with Rustoleum Satin Clearcoat. It helps for sure, and i like the way it takes the shine away. Ive always thought models look better on the dull side, seems to highlight detail.

Got my replacement motors today, so im redesigning the mounts to accommodate the larger motor cans. Tracks are painted and curing over night. hope to be testing the motors tomorrow. I hope these are stronger- 194.4 oz-in. @ (12VDC), we shall see..

You should try autodesk 123d design. It's an easy program to help get started in designing your own stuff.. It's what I use, practice, practice, practice. 😄

Fantastic job, how long has it taken to do?

Thank you! I'm a fan of your YouTube videos and machines.👍🏻 Prob about a month and a half. I'd say design took me a week or so, printing took about 2 weeks, and assembly about another 2 weeks. Just about done now, just finishing up a few details.

Worst case, you have a really nice trailer queen that can drive around! Hope it's able to push dirt without too much strength issues.

No trailer queen here, I don't see any real issues with strength other than maybe the track pads and sprockets wearing out, but that's realistic in a way. 1:1 dont last forever either. I used #4 drill bushings on all the working joints and after running it around a bit and pushing some chunks of 6x6 on the shop floor, it will push some dirt nicely I think.

CAD experience isn't the problem (Solidworks, AutoCAD, and Alibre, lots of experience). My problem is the time available in a day to do the work. I have a 3D printer with a large work volume so I would like to give this a shot. Just curious if you would consider releasing the STL's. I totally understand if you don't want to. Can't hurt to ask :)

I also have a 3d printer but not the time or skills with the whole design thing to produce a product as good as you have.
I am amazed how well it has turnned out and you should be commended for an awesome result.

but for a reasonable price I would be interested in buying the stl files.
or would you consider printing another dozer to sell.

Awesome Jason!! Are you using the H800 or the 480? Afina filament or another brand?
Using software for the supports or adding them manually?
I'm also interested in the STL's for a reasonable price.

Thanks Jason, that's not bad as far as a kit would go, design and print, well thats a different story!

Yes, if i had a larger printer some parts would not need to be cut up, so would mean less parts, but the same amount of time. There are few things i would change in the design if i made another one. It was fairly time consuming for this one build...

A few more pics and vid of the full assembled running test with sound. Imagine you dont hear the air purge :) And excuse the slight shakiness of the video, I had clamped my phone to a 60" straight edge, and it wombled a bit as it was leaning against the table. I also need a little practice smoothing out my control.

Lou, yes I'm pretty happy with the gear motors now. As you can see from the vid, the speed is perfect And I need to test a little bit more by adding some plate steal inside the chassis for weight but the motors will not stall while pushing an object heavier than the dozer itself. The tracks loose traction, but this was on concrete. Dirt will be diff but I think the tracks will still break loose if pushing something too heavy. Thanks for following.

Thank you, and sorry about that I never mentioned anything about that, or showed that the Servonaut SMT I'm using for sound is tucked up under the 2 Sabertooth 2x12 motor controllers. I printed a little organizer for the electronics to mount to, to keep things neat and the sound module can't be seen in the pics.

The sound isn't bad, actually sounds good in person due to the larger speaker and speakerbox I'm using. I had this SMT laying around, I'm curious to know what the new sounds on the new Servonaut modules sound like.. May have to place and order cause this SMT was actually supposed to be for my excavator.

Now it makes sense, driving the actuators separately to get your blade tilt;)

You figured out my secret!lol Doing it this way works awesome. Add another actuator to the C frame and you get the tip function. It all works very well and is quite easy so long as you have everything pivot and only anchor the blade on one side. I'm not sure if Jason is running his this way or not though? Are you Jason?

Yes, Im just using the actuators for blade up n down, and have both actuators tied together so the blade does not tilt left or right yet. I wanted to prove everything else out before getting tricky, but after running the dozer that function would be useful so will be working on that in the future.

Reg, yes your secret is out as i am doing exactly that. And yes the blade uses a draglink which is mounted on one side of the front of the dozer chassis. I should have moved that point as far to the edge of the chassis as the radius of that drag link would be larger and on full lift and drop of the blade, the blade shifts in towards the tracks as it follows the radius of the drag link. No rubbing, but ive made a note about that for next time.

RCP57
05-07-2015, 04:44 PM
Haha, not much of a secret! My first try at making the blade tilt didn't go great because I was using two actuators to "tip" the blade and that caused binding when "tilting". When I built the second conversion I didn't use any for tip but had learned from the first that one side of the blade must anchored to the C frame and the other side must "float". If both sides are held tight it will twist the $h!t out of everything and you won't get much tilt on the blade. I also switched from rubber bushings to spherical bushings where the C frame mounts to the track frames. This made a big difference as well as there is no resistance at all against twist. I went back and redid my own conversion and the blade tilt and tip works great now. Lot's of trial and error but we eventually get this stuff working sweet!:bounce::bounce:

Thank you, believe me if they had a cat yellow filament I would be all over that. My next project is going to be a Euclid dump truck. They were like a lime/neon green and I happened to order filament close to that, so there will be less painting thankfully. On the other hand I did go with the grey so the wear was more noticeable on the dozer tracks and uc parts, I like it kinda.

Autodesk 123D and Tinkercad come to mind and Fusion360, although I'm not sure if that one is free or not. There are some others I'm sure. Plenty of Autodesk tutorials on YouTube to get you started too.

Thank-you sir! I'll look into downloading one, or more of those, when my brother gets here to visit. He's the one that knows how to initially get stuff like that into my computer.

Jason,

Are the track pads on the dozer printed? Is that a difficult print? It looks like there would be an overhang no matter which orientation it was printed?

I'm thinking about getting a printer or having a friend print track pads for my little Oliver Dozer.

Thanks for the great build thread, great work!

Jim

Jim, yes I printed them and the way I avoided any support was printing them at a 45 degree angle, and a fine resolution. They came out great. I think I may have a pic showing the part orientation. If I'm going to make more in the future, I would like to try printing out of nylon, not that mine are worn but I really avoid driving it on anything but dirt if you know what I mean.

Heres how they printed... And a little trick i use when the part doesnt have alot of area to stick to the build plate in the printer like the chain here, is to design a small pad onto the part that gets printed like a foot, and later is easily broken off after the part is done. I loaded the build area up with as many tracks as i could fit. Hope this helps.

Can you recommend a decent 3D printer(s) & what is the cost range for them?

Ive been asked this a few times, and i can really only recommend what i know, and i use the Afinia h480 printers, they have been replaced now with the h400. They arent very main stream but are quality printers. They are around 600.00 i think. I like this place for their customer service and prices. www.octave.com/3d-printers/afinia-3d-printers.html?p=1

So as far as a decent printer goes, Afinia makes good stuff. I like mine which are over 5 years old now and still running day and night.

Thank-you, sir.
5 years of constant usage says all I need to know, they're a GOOD quality machine to still be running. I've had inkjet printers that didn't even last that long.

In the video, teh model makes the srceaching sounds like the REAL cats, with ALL METAL track, & track components. It this something you did with the sound system, or is it due to the metal track pins you've used? I LIKE the way it sounds realistic.

Yeah, your not the first person to mention that haha. Its just the track pins squeaking like you said. Cool little bonus I guess. :)

Yes, it is a great added bonus feature. It sounds very realistic!
Would you consider selling the STL files for JUST the tracks? If not, would you consider making a set of tracks?

I've been doing some investment casting using 3d printed parts, I think those track links would be a great candidate for brass investment casting. Make the pin hole slightly undersized and drill it out as a secondary operation. How many links total?

So anyways......

Had a Firgili actuator blow a drive nut a few weeks back..

Actuonix has taken over now and were very helpful in getting me back together by sending me some replacements at no cost except shipping. Thanks Ian!

However didnt need the "special tool" to get the end cap back on.

"The actuator shaft is screwed onto a Delrin/Fiberglass composite drive nut. This nut can be broken by over rotating the actuator shaft if you remove or reinstall the shaft tip. See

Back together and ready for the dirt.

I am looking at doing a Tonka bulldozer RC conversion and am considering using the Firgelli/Actuonix actuators. I am wanting to have a two way blade, both raise/lower and swivel left/right. The raise/lower would use two actuators moving in sync like your dozer, but the left/right would require the actuators to move inversely (left extend, right retract). Do you know of a way to do this?

Sure, Pm me.

Sorry for the late reply. I sold the dozer I was working on. The tracks were my biggest issue I was having. That coupled with my gear reduction drive motors constantly burning up, led me to get flustered with it. I sold it to a fellow in our local RC club. HE is slowly working on it. HOPEFULLY he can get it to function properly!

What an amazing looking machine. I was curious if it is still running and how well does it push dirt? Brian

Amazing build and attention to detail.... quite lazy to dig into the previous posts but anybody knows what scale is this? 1:14?
