So I finally bought one and it arrived last week

http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww216/Calum-Ross-Smith/IMG_0514.jpg (http://s721.photobucket.com/user/Calum-Ross-Smith/media/IMG_0514.jpg.html)

Ordered a 6 valve block from Premacon, a quick coupling from Fumotec and his new rotating screen bucket - still to be delivered
I've started to assemble some parts, then I will take it all apart to paint it.

The only thing I'm missing is a battery I would like a lipo but I'm unsure what to buy? The heavier the better as it will be mounted in the counter weight.

Congrats! You will enjoy assembling it!

The Li-Po I use for mine is 3S 5000mAh. Cont. 40C/Burst: 80C

It's 15.5cm (6 inches) by 4.5cm (1¾ inches) by 2.5 cm (1 inch) and just fits in the counterweight with some room left over for the wires.

WOW!!! Congratulations Calum, quite an enjoyable model to put together for sure.

I put in a 5 valve block & it seemed to spread nearly the entire width... 6 will be tight!

I also use a 3s 5000mAh lipo from Team Enrich-Power that measures 135mm x 42mm x 28mm

The hyd pump that comes with this model is ridiculously fast & with such small bore cyls, cycle time is very quick! even with the motor rpm at 50%. I set my pressure to 18bar, seems plenty to keep the model planted while digging.

Good luck with the build, hope it goes together easily for you. :)

Yes so far its been excellent to build, everything fits so well and looks well made too!
I asked Frank about a 6th valve and he said it should be fine, hopefully it will work for me..
I remember you saying about your's been a little quick did you ever change anything or do you just use it like that?

I shall have a look at that battery too

Thanks Calum

Slow progress from the weekend but paint has showed up so after a first assemble I will strip it back down and hopefully paint and assemble the undercarriage

More progress this weekend but sadly not very much! I've assembled my tracks but i had 2 links missing so an email to Frank and he's sending me ones to finish them off

I've primed all the metal parts for the undercarriage and I will hopefully put some colour on them this week

Hi Calum, nice/interesting to see the progress pictures. Looks like the finish of the various pieces has improved too from when I build mine.

That valve block sure looks impressive!

Note - I know the upper rollers are just installed temporarily (pictures posted )9/23), but be aware that the shorter end is supposed to be to the outside. In the pictures you have them alternating. That way your track will not track.

Here a picture of what I mean:

Yes I noticed looking at other peoples pictures their metal parts seemed to have a lot of surface rust on them
The valve block really is an excellent piece! Its a premacon block and weighed over 400g without the the servo's fitted

Good spot, I hadn't noticed that I had to file out the holes to get the bolts to be a looser fit. I will swap them about when I rebuild

Hi Calum, what is the exact problem you have? I remember having a hard time myself. One of the ESCs has to run in reverse to the other. I could not get that to work, for some reason the ESC kept reverting to the default program. Ended up reversing the input in the radio.

Hi Calum, sounds like you are in Air/Heli mode which doesn't allow reverse. Needs to be in Car/Boat mode. Is kind of explained in the manual how to do it.

Got it sorted now had to read the manual over a few times before it finally made sense. It tracks really well i'm still amazed how heavy the undercarriage is compared to my old stahl machine

Yes, that manual needs some reading to make sense of it. Took me a while too to get the tracks working properly.

By the time you have the whole excavator assembled you are looking at a good 20kg. Not the easiest thing to carry around. Already put a couple of nice dings in the doors here.

Due to buying a house and having to move, I've hardly touched the excavator but this last week or so I found some time to continue on with it
I wanted all my electrics to be in one place and be as neat as possibly so I built this

http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww216/Calum-Ross-Smith/IMG_0758.jpg (http://s721.photobucket.com/user/Calum-Ross-Smith/media/IMG_0758.jpg.html)

The slew, pump and aux ESC are mounted at the bottom, then the top part has points for positive and negative connections. My receiver will be mounted to the top part as well.

A general look over the machine

http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww216/Calum-Ross-Smith/IMG_0760.jpg (http://s721.photobucket.com/user/Calum-Ross-Smith/media/IMG_0760.jpg.html)

I'm still waiting on a battery, trying to find a good quality Lipo which is suitable for my machine hasn't been easy, also buying from Europe seems to impossible due to laws preventing postage. So i'm just waiting on someone getting back to me next week about one which will hopefully do the job

Venom is a great brand, I use them in 4s in my 850. Everything else runs on 3s & they're all EnrichPower brand. Both 4s & 3s batts are 5000mAh. A lil on the pricy side, but very reliable, not a moments trouble with any of them, charging or using.

Very tidy and nicely laid out!

You already got some good advice on the battery, but here is even another one: :-)

I have this battery in my excavator. It's quite cheap and small while still at the 3S 5200 mAh capacity and costs only $19:

http://ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B00USY19EE&Format=_SL160_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=tube00-20

MultiStar 3s 5200mAh

(Mine has a XT-60 discharge plug but the Amazon text reads XT-90. I believe that is wrong.)

Correct Joe, quick coupling will be run off the 2 small lines on the outside and I'm planning on purchasing a grab later on this year if and when I get the model up and running. Yes its very tight but all the covers fit without modification just hoping I can squeeze the battery in behind the valves and into the counter weight of i'm going to run into problems

Thanks Rakthi, i wanted them to be all in one place for ease of removal and also of the base incase of an oil spill. My next challenge is to get 6 servo wires routed to it... Still haven't thought of a solution yet

It wouldn't be that much of an imposition to extend the width of the counter weight to house a thicker battery. The 5amp EnrichPower batts are quite compact for the punch they have.

I then made up brass pins for the end of the stick, these were made from 4mm brass rod. Threaded and castle nuts with split pins too, I ordered 1mm split pins to replace the ones I used as I think their a little large

It lives! Now I have a question - how do people setup their remotes?

Should I run the pump on a 3 way switch so it has 2 speeds?
The other option I have is to use mixes, I can get on valve to open and power the pump on a curved mix but when I try to add more they don't work?

Also setting up the slew with a Servonaut MFR, I've slowed it right down but it takes a lot of movement to make it move so precise moves aren't easy.

Any suggestions?

Hi Calum

I have the Servonaut MFR on the fast setting, so takes only a very limited movement of the stick to make it go slow (and scale) enough to keep control. But there is some play in the whole slewing mechanism.

As for the pump ... The way it is set up in the Commander from Scaleart, you can control the speed of the pump with a separate control which allows you to set the speed of the pump, independent of the mixer which will make the pump go faster depending on the opening of the valves.

I have the pump running at maybe 10-15% of it's capacity at all times so there is no lag when you start opening the valves. Seems to work fine for me, even when operating more than one valve.

I want to run mixes so the more the valve is opened the faster the pump goes but for some reason I can only get one mix to work?

Hi Calum,

Seems like the MFR is no longer produced by Servonaut ...

There is a small potentio thingy on the MFR that allows you to set the RPM of the motor. If I remember correctly you have to put the jumper on AB and then select the modus that allows you to change the reaction speed of the motor.

I have the German piece of paper with the instructions that came with the MFR, but can't really figure it out anymore.

As for the mixer, might be some limitation in your radio? ... The Commander was preprogrammed for the Damitz excavator. Never really checked how it was set up. All I did was remove the link for the mixer from the slew and track functions. Sorry can't really help you there.

Hi Calum, wish I could help you out with the radio, but since I barely grasp the use of the mixers over multiple functions on my own equipment ... Think you will be better off posting your question on the German forum. I figure there will be one or more guys with a 490 and a Graupner.

Worked perfectly in my machine with the pump supplied by Fumotec, its exactly the same valves which he use in the 490 except made of steel instead

Only valves I'll use, haven't had any problems with those valves and pump. A lil' pricey but superior quality!! I'm sure you will find out :)

I had a terrible time with paint, it never really cured and could chip off with the slightest knock. So after much thought I decided to strip it and repaint it using an airbrush instead of spray cans.
So far I’m really glad that I’ve done it, there was things I wasn’t happy with the first time round so this has given me a chance to repair/fix these which will hopefully improve the machine. Anyway it slowly goes back together. Still loads more painting to be done

liftmys10 - thanks I'm super happy with how its turning out.

Joe - sadly I have not used it since I originally painted it! Disgraceful I know :( I will aim for completing it this year for some summer digging.
I cant comment on the screen either, as its yet to touch any dirt...

Been distracted building and painting other trucks, but I should be back to this soon enough

Note to self - Do not try and paint 2 projects at once!

A shed load of sanding, filling, primer, paint, anger, more sanding, more filling, more painting and some clear coat later progress is being made!

Currently down to the last 4 main items, everything else is hanging up curing and waiting to be fitted. Alongside a Tamiya Scania which i'm building

A little more done tonight

Started of with the hard pipes - the screws that hold the pipes on was a nervous job, trying not to scrape any paint but I got away with apart from a little mark.

Then all the pivot holes cleaned out from paint, the ram was put into its place and the stick mounted to the boom :D

Well it lives again

Everything connected up, oil in the tank, bled it up and checked for leaks - so far the only one was a return pipe to the tank which was a quick fix.

I've been painting interior parts in the meantime - a mixture of airbrushing and hand painting

https://i.ibb.co/rt33Xy0/IMG-20190616-142603.jpg (https://ibb.co/thzz1CK)

Also last weekend got the final coats of yellow on the door and cab, those were clear coated and left to harden up. I've given them a light grey colour inside. Next job will be to glue the windows in and mount the door

https://i.ibb.co/vB3SwG4/IMG-20190616-142536.jpg (https://ibb.co/sPKZmG9)

And yesterday it was time to test it out, just some light digging whilst I set pump speeds and pressures. I mainly just wanted to see how a trial went, lasted nearly 1 hour on a 5000mah battery which I'm happy with :D
Then as the battery was coming to an end my swing stopped working  soooo thats was the end of that, packed up and back on the bench I removed the motor and gears to find a grub screw loose... A dob of Loctite and back in it goes!

I think so Joe, haven't got many hours on it so far. My only problem is the stick cylinder - I can't decide if its faulty or not. It doesn't seem to have much power but maybe I'm expecting too much from it?
Whats the digging power of your 490 like?

Calum

Lil Giants

I have my pressure turned down to 18bar, I dig in cultivated soil & it won't pull the model off its perch... if the stick with is pulling the model around, the pressure is too high... but with 14mm cyl bores on this model I don't think it's possible anyway... what do have your pressure set to?

Keep in mind raising/lowering pressure will greatly affect reaction speed too.

calum_scania
09-11-2019, 01:52 PM
It's set to around 22bar, I'm not trying to dig up my garden or anything extreme. Just I feel it should have a little more power?
I don't have anything to compare it so maybe it's okay. Certainly digging sand it managed easily
