OH no.... why do I start more stuff???

I have had these wheels kicking around for over a year and I have been really wanting to build something stupid with them so here's the start of it. It will be a "hotrod" of sorts using a King Hauler daycab and I'll build a little flatbed for it. My goal is to have it drift and chop nuts on the shop floor and that's about it. Sounds simple right? I am only using this cab for mock up. I will either buy a new one(any ideas where to get one?) or use the cab from the King I bought last month. New would be nice though for sure because the other one is a bit beat. Rear suspension will be a home brew of self made leaves and so on. The front may stay stock KH but the stance is a bit too wide so I will likely machine an axle but nothing fancy. I quickly sheared a couple strips and bent up my own rails. Now I need to start making suspension parts!

Tell me you guys think! Good or bad.lol

I agree! I was reading your post, couldn't see the pic yet ( poor vision, I zoom in the text on my iPad :( ) and right away I envisioned a hand built aluminum body RCP Rat Rod.
It's the rest of us who use KH cabs for unique builds! You of all people are not allowed.:cop: let's see some metal !

Haha, thanks boys. Don't count me out yet. I haven't drilled any mount holes for this cab:). We'll just have to see what happens;).

Today was a productive day kinda. I machined a new axle that is 2cm narrower overall. It's also a fair bit lighter. It mounts the springs directly under the frame rails so that these fat @ss tires fit in the wheel well but still retains good steering travel. I have yet to mount the shackles on the rear but I am still pondering something... Next I moved onto the rear. I was thinking custom leaves in the back until I went digging through my spares pile. I actually should have named this the hoarder special because there will be more oddball items in this truck but whatever. I ended up making ladder bars from some channel and using the front shocks/towers for the rear suspension. It actually works quite well although there is no articulation. I don't want any of that anyway because I want it to spin doughnuts until the battery goes dead or I get bored.lol Plenty of work to do but I like it!

With those wide tires and being a single axle you will have no problems doing droughts till the battery is dead, just ask the guys who have seen my junk truck in action. My poor junk truck has spent more time doing droughts and on its side the actually driving.

It's hard to stop once you start isn't it! Move the battery in the cab, get third gear working and they will need an air chisel to get the smile off your face. You will also be surprised at how well is does it on carpet. I have found hotel carpeting to be the best.

Yeah this whole hobby is bad. I'm trying to save money for something else but I can't stop...

I tried it with the battery forward and it wouldn't go anywhere but around in circles. These tires are fairly hard so they have very little grip. I think once I build the flatbed for it things will settle down a bit more and it will be more fun. Third gear in this would be just stupid....

Anyone have a spare aluminum drive gear for third? That's what I'm missing to put it over the top for wheel spin....:jaw:

It's getting there! While you guys are eating popcorn I've been trying to get stuff done. Still much to do but after every step I end up having to test:D:D:D. It's making the process take much longer than planned:rolleyes:.

I plan to solid mount the outer 6 boards and have the middle one lift out for battery access. I think it will work out OK. Need to make a headboard and bumper next then do some final mounting of stuff. Eventually I will have to make hubs for the rear wheels so that they quit falling off!

Anyone have a new KH cab they want to sell? I need one!

I don't know about the flat black idea. I'm not a fan of that personally. I guess it looks cool on the right vehicle but as a teenager of the 90's I'm more drawn to flashy things. Not saying this truck is or will be flashy but that's where I would go if I liked painting.lol At any rate, I am happy to get another person on board with creating a totally useless category of truck! This thing would be a lot more fun if I had some smooth pavement close by or access to an arena. I am curious as to how fast it would go if given the space. I'm sure if it had 3rd gear it would probably do 20mph or so. Right now as soon as I touch the throttle it spins out in second on the shop floor. I only have about 20' of open space so it's hard to tell what it's really doing. These tires get no traction what so ever on the front or rear...Perfect!

Who knows RW, maybe my next purchase will inspire you as well:cool:.

PS-Anyone find a cab for me yet?lol

Just point in the direction you want to go, and punch it, the gyro automatically steer in that direction. Basically makes it more fun for idiot drivers like myself:). Watch some of the drift RC car videos. It's insane how precise some of that stuff is.

I think this truck needs an "anti gyro". It gets so little traction that you can't give it full throttle even in first gear without it going into a spin. I guess it's perfect for what I built it for but it's actually kinda frustrating. I think the main problem is actually a lack of space to let it rip. If you could slowly build up speed instead of punching it I think it would be a lot better.

I wasn't going to post the second video because I wasn't sure anyone would think it was funny. I was on the fence myself but I liked the footage. Especially when the truck goes up on two wheels for a second. How the dozer didn't come off is beyond me.

I noticed the same thing RW. I have to admit that I have enjoyed to coincidence:cool:

A couple things where do you find a garage with all that space , second how come you didn't post the video of you doing that with the full sized Hayes in the parking lot ? Mike

Haha, yeah if I would just kick our pickup outside year round I would have some space! Not happening though because I would lose the only "bench" I keep clear.lol

No donuts with the HDX although I did scuff the tires once when I downshifted from 4th to 3rd without standing on the throttle while slowing down. I found it a bit nerve wracking to find the shifter, change gears, put it in lock up, take it out of lock up, step on the retarder, ect all while you are driving by cars on a two lane road with a 11' wide truck.lol That and the guy beside you has nearly 50 years experience so you don't want to look like an idiot!lol My wife dealt with the pressure better than me I think. It was a good time though for sure. He seems to think we both need to drive the truck he drives everyday for work next. It is the last Hayes ever built and is very famous as far as trucks go. Type in "Hayes H17" if you want to check it out. He has driven the truck since she was delivered new in July of 1975. Quite a crazy story to drive one truck for 40 years!

Might need to make a set of outdoor wheels for it perhaps?

It's amazing how much more traction the stock dual wheels get. I put them on the rear one day and it would barely steer on the shop floor. It would still spin a good nut but you could actually get up some speed. I don't think they will fit on the front with the narrowed axle though.

No new cab. I guess no one has one on here so I will have to buy one off the internet somewhere. I can say that the RC4WD grill is very tough. Drove it straight into my RC self base which is 3/8"x4" steel and it barely even bent it:eek:.

It's been slow in my shop for the last week:( so I have been poking at this to keep myself occupied. A while back Mario was kind enough to send me his old cab that had been painted and stripped too many times for his shiny black KW. I was happy to get a cab and didn't really care that it wasn't perfect.(Thanks Buddy)

I made up panels for the roof and rear cab wall out of aluminum and mixed up some Bondo so that I could do some body work. I cleaned up the cab a bit more with a razor blade and filled the clearance light holes before priming and painting it. The primer went on great and so did the first coat of red. Everything went south when I applied the second coat starting with a brand new can of red. I've had problems with this before when I've started a new can part way through causing my beautiful(for me) paint job to turn into a 90 year old's scrotum right before my eyes. Anyway, I left the cab for three days and did a little sanding before applying another coat. Even after that long the paint still reacted in a few spots but I just settled for it being good enough. This cab has been exfoliated more times than a Kardashian so it will do until I win the lotto and buy a new cab. I quickly made up a little visor for it, installed a bunch of new/used chrome I got from Brandon and then tore the whole thing down to paint the chassis. I wanted to have all of it powder coated but decided that I would rather polish off a $6 rattle can of BBQ black paint than spend the money on doing it right.lol This truck is not a show stopper and it has a likelihood of ending up shiny side down at 30mph so no need to spend too much time or money.

Enough talking, here she is!

Thanks guys. I need to make some hubs for the front wheels because they are just plastic to metal on the spindles and the fit isn't very good. Running at those speeds for long might make things a little melted and then I'll lose a front wheel too!lol

That sounds great Bo. I will be taking some pieces in for powder coat this week so I should have things all set up and ready to start by the time you are ready!

Yeah the hubs are just a bit too thick on the rear wheels for the nylock nut to thread on far enough. Might switch to two thin nuts instead to cure the problem.

This is one build that Tamiya should contact you about mass production. You've added a new drift class. lol Personally I like it because I would like to add a single axle flatbed truck to my collection to haul my building materials around my layout. And you sure did a great job of making a two in one truck.

First barrel roll into the grass was no biggie but the hard flop in the gravel near the end caused some scratches for sure. Only on the outside of the deck though. The stacks are tough and protected the rest! There was a lady, dog and little girl on a scooter walking down the road further up. They saw me screwing around and walked really slow until I packed up and walked home. I think I was scaring them. At least I hope I was...lol
