I have been on this project for a while on and off, now I have compleated my first goal to finish the crusher and make it crush rocks, it was my main goal with this quite large task, for me atleast.
I said to myself, if I can make the crusher work then the rest will be a walk in the park more or less, so now when I got this done I will continiue to build the feeder, im still waiting on some parts to be cut.
In the end this will hopefully be a functionally mobile crusher, but this will take some time I think! :)
Im aming to make it as similar as the original but some details will be simplyfied to make building easyier.
Im running the crusher on a 5065-236kv motor with a 3cell lipo, 120mm flywheel and a 36-12 beltdrive.
The crusher opening is now set to 100x45mm at the top and about 9mm down below. Seem to crush pretty good this way, I had a larger opening with slightly less vertical plates but the rocks mostly just wanted to go up, not get crushed.
I have just tested with a half full crusher, I know it will probably work better when its almost full.
I only had 2 stops in it, but that was due to empty battery, if I will get more stops I will try a larger 40t pulley to get a bit more tourqe.
So here is a few pics of how it looks today, and a video. (In the video its not regular rocks, its a softer kind.
Here is the real deal 1:1.

Are your crusher plates made from old thread cutting dies?
Nope, they are milled out of regular steel, we will see how they hold up in the long run.

Looks like a fun project.
Are you following plans or other info for any of the details like the amount of eccentric or the angle of the two plates?

Just info from Google searches, pictures and trial and error. :)
The eccentric throw is 4mm.

SWEET project Kalle!!!
Great to see you finally bring this project out of the shadows... it's like 6 months ago when I saw the 1st vid of the early breaker box. Can I assume you're making two everything as you go? :D :p
Like everything you have built in the past, this mobile crusher is gonna be scale appealing & very functional too. :)

Yeah, I didnt want to post something before I even knew if im going to make it work, but now I feel that it might actually do! :)
Hehe, for now just one, but we will se in the future, there is a lot of work on this so I will probably not have the motivation to make another one! :)

Made a little more progress on the crusher. I got some parts for the feeder table, so welded that up and started to try out the motors I got for the feeder, it was kind of a shot in the dark becuse I had no idea how much power it would take and how much the table would weigh.
It turned out that the original weights on the motors were to small so I got some scrap brass and made the weights twice as big, that woke the vibration up pretty good.
So I think I found a nice vibration speed.
Also mounted the crusher to the chassis. Now im waitning on some parts before I can continiue on the conveyor and feeder.

In the pics there is a quite large (120x25mm) flywheel in steel, I have already crushed Swedish granite rocks, very hard, will see how it does in the long run, but it does crush.

Thanks guys!
I have made mounts for the springs on the feeder, still a little more to do to make it work a little better.
I have also got the rubber strips for the conveyor, its 1.5mm thick, should work out just fine I think, waiting on motors and need to make som more parts for it still.
I have also invested in a 3D printer, nothing fancy, just a cheap chineese machine, works good enogh for me so far.
I have printed the covers for the flywheel and beltdrive, Still need to smooth out and sand the raw finish, but that will be later i think.
So here it is as of now...

Really Neat!
I really like the timing belt and drive sprockets, but do you think that plastic roller chain and standard chain sprockets would hold up or would there be too much stress and vibration in this application?
I'm asking because if I attempt something like this, it would be much easier for me to use roller chain and buy sprockets vs machining timing sprockets. Also, where did you find the timing belt?
Thanks for the pictures!

How did you join the conveyor belt? Do you have any pictures of that and what exactly is the belt material? Cloth reinforced rubber?

This timing belt is really strong, I would be suprised if it would tear apart.
Both belt and pulleys are from Maedler.de.

I did join the belt with a glue called Liquisole, I got it from my local food store, its a really common glue around here, got a very strong joint from it, and the joint is still flexible.
The belt material in Neoprene rubber 1.5mm thick.

I sure had my doubts myself about the belt, but it works flawlessly now.
Yes I just recently got a tip from a friend to taper one of the rollers to get it to self center, I made the taper 0.5mm smaller on the ends, no more walking of the belt! :)

Not really, I have done a test run, but I forgot that I just had spot welded the fixed crush plate so it came loose and that was the end of that test! :)
I did re-weld it the other day though, so now it shouldn't break loose.
One more thing I have noticed is that the crush plates should go into each other if you would lay them together, as the sit in the crusher now, the tops of the pattern lines up with each other, guess it would crush better the other way.
That's about it, it's summer now and I don't spend much time in this hobby this time of the year, more of a "get through the winter" kinda hobby. :)

I noticed too that the plates need to be offset . It would definitely take less effort to crack a rock in half pressing it over a sharp point evenly rather than pinching it like wire cutters work.
I am working on some crushing equipment as well, but a slightly larger setup using existing laboratory crushers.
Interesting build, looking forward to see progress and ofcourse a video when crushing!

As I sold the crusher a few months ago I still had a few parts left from the lasercutter to make another one, but I only have parts to make the crusherbox, so thats what Im going to do for now.
But this will be a slower build I think, I also lost all cad files when my harddrive gave up, Im going to let someone take a look to see if I can get some files back.
So I started to make another eccentric, axle is the exact same as the first one, 4mm throw, seem to work pretty good, one thing I will change later is the crush plates, this time they will be offset to each other, made that misstake on the first one to have them edge to edge.
Oh well, here is what I have so far...

We had my Denver jaw crusher out last month for Cabin Fever Expo. Worked great!
I still haven't had time to edit some video of it working crushing hard Limestone.
Something you may want to consider on your jaws along with the offset teeth are;
Curved jaws. Watching my machine chew the rocks it looks like the curve jaw makes it feed well.

Yeah, I did consider that on the first one as well, but for simplicity I made them straight, but I think youre right, it will feed better.
Is only the moving jawplate curved on yours?
Also, how much throw does the eccentric have?

Nice project and great job! I´ve some worries if the excenter shaft will be strong enough...made of brass. A friend of mine built a chrusher years ago and had some trouble with teh shaft and bearings in the beginning. After changing ball into roller bearings it runs great...
But that was just an idea...keep on with your crisher. It looks great!;)

Also, how much throw does the eccentric have?
I'll have to get back to you for the throw on on the crank and better view of the jaws.
Bear in mind that my crusher is a real machine in the sense that it is commercially built. As far as I know ,these are used for testing small amounts of ore in a laboratory.
Here's a view of the jaws I took last summer.

Great to see you're gonna have another go at Kalle
Has the Norwegian ever sent you any finished pics your old one?

Nice project and great job! I´ve some worries if the excenter shaft will be strong enough...made of brass. A friend of mine built a chrusher years ago and had some trouble with teh shaft and bearings in the beginning. After changing ball into roller bearings it runs great...
But that was just an idea...keep on with your crisher. It looks great!;)
Thx,
Yes you might be right on the brass shaft, but on the first one I did some testing crushing real rocks and it did at least hold up for that, but this time I will use a larger beltdrive and flywheel and see how that goes, I can always turn a new shaft from steel if brass dont hold up.
I will try ball bearings for now, I had almost all of them on the shelf so we will see how they last.

Yes I see that its more heavy duty then mine, but this time around I might settle for just crushing softer material, but we will see. :)

Thanks Joe, as I had almost all material to make a new crusher box I had a hard time just leving it there on the shelf! :)
I have some pics, not finished though, talked to him yesterday and he had been busy with work so no time for building.

Made a little progress, made the 2 holders for the bearings.
I got the tolerances a little sloppy on 2 spots on the shaft, I think i will go for a shaft in steel and get the tolerance right and at the same time a stronger shaft like Grainfarmer said.
Might also go for roller bearings later on, found SKF roller bearings on Ebay that had a good price.

Thanks,
They are made by a German company named Maedler, but they don't sell online, you have to find a dealer to buy through.

Oh well, I have scrapped the brass axle and roller bearings, the old one still seems to hold up for the new owner but I just wanted to make the axle out of steel and get the tapered bearings as someone here suggested! :)
I aslo have bought a house outside town and did a makeover on the garage that was in quite bad shape.
So here are some pics of the new crusher im building.

Nice work as usual. I see you fixed the jaw teeth like we discussed last time. Hope this works out well.
I like seeing crushing equipment being built. I haven't had enough time to get more done on my stationary crusher.

Good to see you back it Kalle :)
Congrats on the house purchase & great job on the garage makeover, nice & bright in there now. Did you use LEDs for lighting?
Per your tig welds, they look better than mine, I still use my mig more than the tig. As Reg use to say, "gob it on & grind off the excess" ...though I think he does a lot less grinding off nowadays :D

Yeah, I had them made the right way this time.
I hope to finish this one and keep it, I will finish the crusher unit this winter and pick up next autum to continue with the frame, conveyor and feeder.

Thanks Joe,
Yeah, its a pleasure to work in there now!
No its regular armatures I have, I got these armatures for free from a friend. But I did went with another bulb (right word?) in them, these have a more white light then the regular used bulbs and are perfect for me.
Yeah you can always grind the welds but I think TIG welds are good enough looking even if they are quite bad, at least compared the bad MIG welds! :)
I really love my TIG welder, its so clean and you can do small welds, I just need to practice more to get more experience and less shaky hands! :D

Now it was time to turn the flywheel and the extra weight for the beltwheel.
I only had a 100mm chuck on my lathe and it cant hold pieces as large as the flywheel so I had an chuck adapter made by a local machineshop to get the boltcircle right and then I turned the last steps myself.
Now I can fit a 125mm chuck and this lathe will last me a few more years! :)
Here´s some progress on this project.
First I turned the internal hole for the flange mount on the spindle.
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1024x768q90/922/k5wULP.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/pmk5wULPj)
Then flipped it to turn the outer flange to fit on the new chuck.
I had 0.01mm runout on the spindleface with new backplate.
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1024x768q90/924/9Klg4g.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/po9Klg4gj)
Here mounted and started to turn the flywheel, I had a runout on the chuck on about 0.03-0.04mm, that was measured on a drillbit in the chuck. Good enough for me.

And just a pic of my 10 year old chinese lathe, it has served me good over those years.

Fine machined and printed parts you got there. Have you evaluated adjustable bottom opening/distance of the jaws?

I see now you got a joint for a threaded rod as part of fixing the lower end of the moving jaw. Than one got the possibility for a adjustment, say +/- 5mm should do. manual adjustment is fine

Now I get what you was talking about, I thought it was the jaws on the chuck! :)
Yes I have adjustable jaws in the crusher, I can adjust them probably 10mm in each direction.

Made some progress on the crusher unit, its pretty much done exept from paint.
Now im waiting on some lasercut metal, luckily the guy who cuts for me had all the files that got lost when my harddrive crashed a few years ago.
