Ya should definitely be a warning system when the dump is raised!

Happened about a year ago around here on the Burlington skyway and the worst part is the bridge was already under construction and the guys were working on the structure at the time it happened. Just shows how often some drivers don't check their mirrors.

I remember seeing a video on youtube of a dump trailer taking out an overhead sign on the highway and thought it was a fluke accident but I guess it happens more often then I thought

Just some reading and vids.
In perspective it probably happens as often as a truck loosing wheels but because of the internet and media it always gets over exposed.

The Burlington incident was also due to driver being in a bar for lunch. Not a Good Combo.

Don't the new trucks have lockable PTO switches with a large red light on the dash or tower showing the PTO is engaged? The ones I drove thirty years ago did. I guess you got to have your head screwed on straight to run one ya think?

Missed this the first time, but if you look in the background, it appears he already went thru a bridge. So how did it go up that far between the time he passed from one to the other?

Highway Code changes
Calling the incident "appalling," Quebec Transport Minister Jacques Daoust said new updates to the province's Highway Safety Code could see mandatory indicators required in the design of such trucks that would notify drivers if the box is raised. "As we revisit the Highway Safety Code, and we are going to, it's one of the things that will have to be done," he said.
Atleast some good will come of this accident...

Gee Whiz, it's always the result of the 1%'er Idiot Class that makes life harder for everybody else... another moronic electrical safety device added to the list.
Big $$$$$ fines for such stupidity either make you smarter & pay attention to your job or bankrupt you & push you out!!!
My trks have red lights on the dash for PTO engaged... now I would need another light & possibly buzzer too when the box lifts?!! BS!

It's not just highway trucks. Numerous instances of quarry trucks taking down conveyors with a raised bed. My favorite is a quarry truck going downhill into an underground facility, bed up, hit the tunnel entrance and left the bed on the ground behind him. Sadly, it happened again, about a year later. Not the same driver. Newer off road dumps have interlocks between bed-up and transmission controls - restricts trans shifting into higher gears if bed is not seated. But, you can still do a lot of damage in low gear!

95% of the trucks I drive and fix have a lockable pto switch and a red light that lights up your face to tell you things are happening lol. Except our new garbage Hino dump trucks, the have a lockable pto switch but the warning light is inside a console with a lid that covers the light. Pretty horrible design for a 2016 truck.
