Yellows probably more realistic, wouldn't show grease and road grime as much. But i kinda like white, it would help highlight how much stuff is happening with the load.

I love driving this thing around so Joe i'm aiming for Cabin Fever PA 2018 Seems so far away. I'm thinking i've got a few rigs ready by the time that can perform kind of well....so i hope anyway. If you're looking for expanded metal material; try the steel office supply items like wastebaskets, desk organizers, pencil holders, etc. I have found them painted black or silver at Office Depot and even Wal-Mart. They are made with a round tube framework, to which the expanded metal-looking screen is welded. If you buy a large piece (a wastebasket, for example) and cut away the frame; you end up with a large sheet of strong screen material that you can cut to whatever size you need. You'll have to frame it with something though, as the raw edges are sharp! -Mike

Check the mesh of your basket against whatever they're selling in the office products section. For some reason, when I look at your photo, it seems like the mesh is larger than the one I found, (maybe it's just me). When I measure the mesh with a ruler, I find that the height of the 'diamonds' are 4 to the inch, and (measuring diagonally and counting the width of the 'diamonds') they are 7 to the inch. But, unless your dimensions are radically different, then it probably doesn't matter all that much - was just curious if there are different sizes out there.

Yes that's right this one is kind of large. I'm using this for a special thing, will show later when finished. There is a lot of different sizes out there so a shopping around is a must to find your style. Hit the mall.

If you ever get rid of an old microwave oven, the metal mesh in the door window is perfect for this use. Most of these doors are held together with a dozen or so screws and come apart pretty easily. The metal used is pretty thin and will bend or kink if you aren't careful when handling it.

Looks like your little nuts came in giant boxes. Seriously though, WTF? 15 in one box? What a waste of packaging.

Panther F
11-09-2017, 01:16 PM
For us mere mortals, the boxes are too much overkill but to them it would cost way too much to retool a smaller box, then they don't sit in the distribution center or delivery box correctly.

It's funny, but everyone does it. If they can reuse a large box, the smaller part(s) go in and they save money.

I've seen it with aftermarket car electronic parts (back in the old days) and some just don't want to change over so to them, it's not a waste.

Anyway, back to the build... I love the bumper dressing here. The lettering and the diagonal stripes sure make a bold statement and if I ever wanted to make a hauler of some sort, I'll need those black and yellow bumpers. And I do appreciate the many pictures taken on what you have done so far. It helps motivate me to get something done.

Thanks for reply, I asked because the lighting in your photo made the hubs look alot like some rims I tried 3d printing some time ago. Was going to ask you how much effort it was to smooth them out as much as it appeared you had. I really like your idea though of mixing the hub portion of a standard wheel with the machined pvc. I think I'm going to try that just using 3D printed hubs. If nothing else will save a lot of support material and make cleanup much easier.

Yes i like it a lot. https://www.harborfreight.com/2-in-mini-bench-top-cut-off-saw-62136.html
How to avoid cutting fingers in a 12 inch chopsaw this is great for small pieces.

A few things to think of.
1. weak motor stall easy. Use cutting oil and it cut easy.
2. sawblade get clogged easy. Use more cutting oil. Problem solved.
3. Take your time and don't overcharge the sucker...... job done.
4. Did i mentioned screw it to a sturdy surface.........otherwise you will mess up your work of art.
Have Fun.

Is it the best saw out there ??? Probably NOT but for $34.99 i will say it's doing a lot of cutting.

Stupid question since i haven't seen beam haulers moving off highway. Should the lower hinge link / frame extension have some kind of red flag or some lighting? I know more than 2' rear overhangs need it, i don't know if sides do beyond the bumper flags

It looked great out on the pile!

Bo Wallen
01-17-2018, 08:52 PM
Not a stupid question at all. Thanks for asking. Most of the transport is done on the road......when you come to a construction site things get a lil tricky. Some sites spend a bit of planning and grade a decent entry some don't. In this case i was a bit curious how well or not this setup could access different arias. I got stuck a few times....ugh ! The bumper on The front of The BO-Dog is a bit to low for off road. and just standard Tamiya axles and tires does work quite well. Next time you see this one, it will be equipped with Lesu axles and diff lock. New Motor and ESC is also needed. Flaggs and marking in general was missing....Running out of time as usual before a meet. When moving things on special permit things get a bit interesting an some normal rules goes out the windows. The extension-rod on the truck is retractable by a little motor under the frame, so i can pull normal trailers too. Hope this clear some of the questions.

Pretty much what i did to this Globe. Interesting to find out how things functioning or not over time.
The more you care when you build the truck the longer it last.
However there is a problem with quality of casting plastic parts. For some reason the same part from different kits, one can fall apart and the other is strong and good. On the other side i don't think Tamiya could imagine what we do to our trucks when they started this back in the day.

Hey Joe.
After inspection of the Globe. I found out several problems.
1. Four days before Cabin Fever i purchased a brand new 4 Ch Spektrum Receiver to get one more funktion for the Rod/drawbar to retract when i pull regular trailers. That stopped working in reverse.
2. The ESC witch is a Novak Super Rooster had a cracked solder.
So now it is fixed, solder the board in the ESC and one new receiver. No cost just i tiny bit of work...........Life is good ! Back to the Tamuder and finish that one. :bounce:

Thanks for the idea Frizzen. I've been working on and off to make a fully funktional steering system. Three puller's one Beam/other load rig, and three pusher trucks. So far i'm close to happy with the puller trucks, tiny bit left to adjust. Hoping i can get some continuous time space to work on that project. Dropping 5 minutes here and 30 minutes there it's just to complicated and hard to remember where i left off. And while waiting for paint to dry o the shop truck i'm starting this one.......

Sounds like lil cat need a good Dr. It's sad when things aren't working like you was hoping. I'm sure it will do get fixed and happy play time will come around.
This motors needs attention.....the amount of grease in them are minimal....so i recommend put some more of that in before using them.

Wowzers! 4 of the big donnagers, you'll be doing some serious winching with them.

IDK how well the motors work....yet. I have them bolted onto the Bruder D11 conversion. EVENTUALLY, I'll get that project off my project bench(ES) & get it working.

BIGFORD I'm GLAD to hear that they are trouble free motors.

BO, THANKS fir the tip. I hadn't thought to open them to look. I definitely will be checking them, BEFORE placing the machine into service!

Interesting truck indeed.
Can you lay a rule or caliper on those right angle motors? I've been hunting
for a pair but they cant be any more than 40mm wide when placed back to back to fit down into my little project I was foolin with.

CTI actuators? Gear motor on each wheel?

Thanks ittigger ;o)
Now that's a very good question........wish i had a good answer to give. I like the CTI actuators, so i'm trying them. i also looking if there could be a hydraulic alternative. Drive motors might go in the wheels.......i got to ask how you like the ones in your haul trucks. I'll make the front part of the frame in steel sheets for adding weight and strength....thinking i'll pop a line of battery cells inside.......not much room for things.

Lil Giants

Don't need the power of hyds for this type of machine & the CTI's will save you so much space. Do they each require an esc to operate? Maybe the actuonix would simply things even more

The brushed motors work great & only need one esc to run 4 motors. The rpm on 3s is about 110. The brushless ones each need an esc for each motor & travel 10-15% slower, more expensive too, a bit shorter in length.

Good ideas / advice right there. I need a lot of power and low speed when grading or push with front blade or ripper in the rear. Have to do some torque test, it's a bit of dozer power needed to the wheels. I had one idea that required the hood to be extended a bit in length. a two speed gearbox and chain drive between the wheels like the real ones. well back at it and we see.....

Today I got two Boxes delivered from the same vendor in Japan. :D
The small box was shipped August 27. 22 days ride. The big box vas shipped September 3rd. 15 days ride.
The big box is the winner :cop:

And I guess you might know what's inside the boxes.

The reason there are two boxes from the same vendor: They don't put what they have in stock, just some low number on e-bay. I like to buy in Bulk.

Depends on what you are trying to secure and to what are you trying to secure it to. FMCSA 49CFR393.

It all depends on that shackle, as well as the binder rating. Are they made in the U.S.A.? If so, they will be stamped clearly for their working load rating.

Oh Lord, I have to go for Exemptions........My goal was to be able to get the load easy and safe secured, and kind of look scale. also when traveling to different shows, don't have to spend too much time assembly all the stuff.:cop:
However, I got pulled over a few times in the UK. so I take it seriously.
Thanks for the input Zabco, Skeeter.

Components used for securing loads do NOT have to be marked with their working load limits as do components used for hoisting/lifting loads (completely different set of regulations). However if not marked, there are tables in the FMCSA load securement rules that give maximum allowable loading based on size and type of material. Rules also give guidance based on type and size of load and type of vehicle it is being carried on what is required in type, number and positioning of tie-downs. If you are a bit familiar with what is required in the real world and know what real world size of components are then it isn't too hard to come up with scaled components that look correct. In truth, if your sample tie down link is for what I think you are trying to do it will probably scale up to much larger than needed in real world.

Heh, i hope Skeeter and Zabco don't build police interceptors so they can go looking for violations at shows. Then after that someone'll make an OSHA figure or Mine Safety guy...

Do the truck enforcement guys over there in the UK use station wagons to haul the extra truck checking equipment, or were they running normal cop cars to harass you?

(Bring donuts, the guy with a cop car will want to eat them and will drive less to avoid getting donut glaze on the remote)

As someone not involved in trucking or hauling, I might try to put a side handle on the turnbuckle so it looks more like a ratcheting load binder.

Yes, I did heavy haul in Europe for thirty years, so I know what's needed over there. I also over secured all my loads for a piece of mind. Never had a law enforcement person complain. However, it's hard to find the scale stuff that looks and works well. And yes a handle is coming for the turnbuckle, just need to make some decent ones. Thank You Guys for the input, It.s fun to have guys that take their time to interact.

However, it's hard to find the scale stuff that looks and works well.

Thats the big problem. Even as big as 1/14 scale seems, truly scaled down items are tiny and hard to handle. I use chain for tiedowns that has links 1mm in diameter. That scales to over 1/2 inch diameter in the real world. Unless you are trying to tie down something really massive most guys are going to use 3/8" chain. Simply too small to use at scale size if you could even find it.

Looks like your turnbuckles are using 3mm screws? Close to 1 3/4 inch in real world, pretty **** stout.

Zabco, i think you figured out why so many of the action figures are built like power lifters instead of normal people.

You'd be built too if everything was secured with 1 3/4" solid rods with bigger hardware, and log chains. Even my little 'ratchet straps' are 4" wide.
"Bro, do you even lift?"

Yes, I'm kind of tired of finding right scale parts, and who knows how many different scales there is in Tamiya Trucks if you start measuring parts. So if it looks cool and does what I need I'm OK with that. And if you go to a show, More than half of the audience would not see the fake scale anyway. Only hardcore professionals would suffer. And I'. OK with that too. :cop:
