Hi everyone! I've built a few custom RC's in the past but never a semi. There is definitely some different tech involved in these verses just a 4wd crawler. And the price difference is way more on these! But I'm definitely into it and I've already made some good headway. I've posted some of my progress on the Facebook page but i figured I better do it the right way here in the forum. Here are a couple pics of more or less what I'm shooting for.

Some frame and chassis setup. I'm using Lesu axles and single airbag suspension. Don't mind the super sized tires! I only used them to get things going in my mock up!

On to the scale motor and motor/tranny setup. As for the scale motor, I've seen some guys use an arm mounted to the bottom of these as a go between from the servo to the steering. I wanted to do something different tho. I used a low profile servo and mounted it inside the motor.

Im using an Axial, rebuildable, 55T motor and a Veroma Models 3 speed transmission. Very nice setup! Everything fits down inside the rails nice and neat!

And now what I've got so far for my LEDs. Both of these bumpers came from Russ at True Scale. He makes some awesome stuff! All of the LEDs that are lit up are 1.8mm.

I agree! It definitely takes some work to get them smoothed down to paint. I've got 3 coats of primer on it now and still not quite ready for paint.

My next step on the lighting was the drop visor. The one I'm using is a Gear Head stainless steel one. I had an idea to put the clearance lights in it instead of using roof lights. All of my LEDs and lenses for my bezels are clear. I don't want any color showing until they are turned on. The closest roof lenses to the real KW's are the ones that are used on the Aeromax trucks. The problem for me is that they are orange. So... I found a solution!

As with the bumper marker lights, I've used 1.8mm LEDs. I did have to cut the upper corners of the windshield area some to allow for the LEDs and wiring. When the visor is mounted to the cab, you can't see the area that I cut and there is still plenty of area to mount the windshield to.

Yah, that's what happened to my sleeper cap. I'm going to have to sand it down and start over. I'm going to try using a sealer primer over the high build primer as a last step before I paint it this time. Hopefully that will stop it from happening!

So I've been working on it here and there. Actually I've got quite a few little updates. So where do I start?! LOL!

The cab and sleeper are painted! I made door handles out of stainless steel.

I used stainless steel to make side window visors and the strip that goes across the bottom of the cab. And the elephant ears for the hood.

Ok, W900L 2.0!

I've changed out the rails to a set from IHB.
I'm now using True Scale RC air suspension all the way around.
All of the hardware is scale bolts.
I'm using a modified rear bumper that matches the one on the back, in front of the drive tires.
I got ahold of one of True Scales one piece fuel tank mounts for the rearmost mount for my tanks.
I'm now using 6" tanks with 3 straps. (The way it would be on a real truck)
I got a new front bumper that matches the rear bumper.
All of the holes are drilled and ready to start installing the multitude of 1.8mm LED's.
The hood has been painted pearl white. I still need to paint the fenders blue.
OH! and I decided to go with a fixed mount fifth wheel instead of the one that looks like a slider.

I think that's it! LOL! On to the pictures!

NICE!!!!!!! I agree with Tracy, stuff painting the rails. With the white and blue paint the truck needs the added chrome or metal look to it. I know that the real truck has a painted frame but this is yours to make little improvements on. Polish the frame to match the tanks and bumpers but no paint.

Well, I was going to paint them the same blue as the top or the pearl white that I used. I am a truck driver and I've been to a lot of truck shows. I just don't think my OCD will let me get away with not painting them and the suspension components. LOL!

I agree with you, I prefer the blue frame with this paint scheme. Tearing back apart to paint it will go faster than you think. https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/b5/5f/d4/b55fd45a5af324a5c7a00b532f031166.jpg

When you paint the suspension parts, just remember that they do move. I have seen lots of nice paint jobs ruined by flaking paint around bolts and other movable parts. Are you going to paint the trailer to match?

Ok, so what I'm thinking is painting the rails pearl white to match the cab along with the differentials. Then, sense the front fenders are blue, I figure the rear fenders should be too. And I think I'm going to fill the space between the rails with stainless steel. I'm not sure about the trailer yet but most likely I will match it to the truck somehow. I will most defiantly be careful about what I paint because of the moving parts! Thank you for the warning!:)

Seriously guys, thank you all for the compliments! I'm really enjoying this build! I showed it off to a few people today that are not into RCs and they were just amazed. It's a really good feeling to get that kind of reaction from people! It makes all of the hours of hard work worth every second!

Thank you! Yes I did for the sleeper. I sanded them 500 grit and then painted them with lexan window tint spray on the outside surface. They also needed a little sanding around the edges to fit in the openings. Overall I'm pretty happy with them tho.

Hey everyone! It's update time again!

So first off, I finally decided on a name! StarStruck. I chose this name because of the response that I get from people when they see it. They don't really know what to say other than they amazed. It's really like they are starstruck. Michelle up in Canada has made some decals for it!

Next, I stripped everything down off the chassis and well tried to paint it, the chassis I mean. I don't know if it was the weather or what the issue was but the first time I painted it, the paint wrinkled really bad. So in a Walmart parking lot with 2 gallon jugs of water I stripped the chassis back down. And I started over! Well in this case the second time's the charm! This time I got a beautiful perfect paint job on the chassis! I used all scale hardware to put it back together.I really wanted it to look like the bolts or chrome.

Day by day I'm adding more and more detail. I'm still waiting for the final version of my grill and the aluminum floors all of which are being made Russ.

There are two dark pictures posted in here. Both show the headlights. I managed to fit a set of Veroma halo lights into these PMD headlight buckets. I had to use a Dremel and enlarge the opening in the headlights. And then I had to make my own lenses. I just cut down a set that I already had. So in the end I have blue halos and separate LED headlights.

Now onto the pictures! Enjoy!

Thank you! I was really unsure about the white chassis until I got it put back together. Even I stood there in awe! It ended up looking amazing! As for the body, not too many people can drop $400 on just a body, not that I can either really but you get what I mean. I'm sure I'm not the only one on here that's stood there looking at a truck that they built and thought, Holy Crap! I built that!

That is incredible. My fiancé and I are getting married in October and then most likely headed over the road. I've been a local guy for 5 years now. I've always been able to make great money hauling for the coal mines or casing for the oil & gas industry and never had to go over the road to support myself. That has changed haha. About the only gig I can find where I'm at now is hauling lumber and it's barely paying the bills. We're going to go over the road together (not as team, her just riding) and then cut out paying rent, utilities, etc. JCT seems to have a great LP program where guys are still making good settlements at the end of the week after the truck insurance payments.

This build gives me hope that this may be something I could pursue while being OTR! I'm just very scared of things being easily misplaced in all the little nooks of the truck haha. I also hope my (then) wife doesn't move pieces around on me while cleaning lol.

So I'm completely new to all this. Literally 0 experience in the RC world. At the same time, I'm pretty mechanically inclined and catch on quick. So if you don't mind me asking, if I were going to attempt to do something "custom" (like a KW W9 Studio Sleeper look like this) would you order a kit and use what you could from it or start by ordering stock frame rails, then order suspension, and so on? Start from the ground and go in little sub sections? What would you recommend?

This is an incredible build. I am very jealous. Maybe once I hit the big road, we'll cross paths one day!

Thank you for the compliment on my truck! I'm sorry that it took me so long to respond to your comment. I've been busy trying to get a couple of other builds ready for the Indy show and haven't been on here in awhile.

It does happen that especially the smaller stuff gets misplaced or even lost. But that happens even when you've got a workbench! The most important thing is to clean up and put everything away when you're done. That's the best way to avoid loosing stuff.

I think most will agree that for someone with no experience, a kit is the best way for you to get started. Buying and assembling a kit lets you see how everything goes together and how it all works. All kits come with assembly instructions that are pretty easy to follow. I would suggest getting a Grand Hauler kit. It's already got the longer frame rails. They are long enough to build a W900 with a Studio sleeper on but they are shorter than what I used. Honestly, the wheelbase on this truck is right at the edge of unusable if it was scaled up to real size. Using the Grand Hauler rails would make it more realistic in the full sized world.

I really have enjoyed running across some of the members on here! It's always cool to put a face to a user name!
