View Full Version : 4200XL gearbox failure out of the box?

Got my hydraulics all filled up and took it out for the maiden voyage to find the lower is not functioning really at all. Started to get into it a bit but it doesn't look good. Bent motor shaft? Will see what RC4WD says after I send them the vids. A little disappointing to not even get a battery through it and I've gotta start wrenching unless I'm missing something here that someone knows of?

I believe it's a spur gear gearhead... I could see it that one small gear might fail, but to have two flawed gearheads on the same model that is brand spanking new , that's a new low for this idiot company to have sent out without catching with QC...

Good luck Benny fixing their never ending mistakes in model engineering

I suggest you contact Tang from Eagle machinery to see what the issue is, send him the links to your videos. He usually answers within a day or two.

Thanks for the responses. Going to check the ESC's as well, the motor's cutting out is interesting too. Very odd for both tracks to be flawed out of the box and I'm wondering if it's something electrical and not mechanical though looks like it could be both.

Lil Giants

I'd bet doll hairs to dollars that it's entirely mechanical failure... either there's some grit in the gearheads or some component of it is bent... the motors are stalling out. Take one gearhead apart at a time, just incase you have a brain fart while taking it apart & forget exactly how it goes back together - you'll have the other gearhead to refer to. ;)

Right on. I'm a chef in the real world so always gotta have your "Mise en place" which translate nicely to r/c organization as well.

It's almost like there is a set screw that's not tightened on the motor shaft or something. Just catching enough the move the track slightly.

Yea, gonna get into the motors/planetary's tonite to see what's up.

TheBennyB

Found some culprits. Negative ESC wire not in the powerblock. Not 100% sure if it was this way to begin with or while I pulled the electronics out, either way was probably the motor problem. Big issue is the planetary's are thrashed, debris and gear teeth everywhere. Hoping to get some new ones sent to me.
Tracks seem to be a bit tight, could this cause this much damage? I'm used to r/c tanks having some slack in the tracks, same on heavy equipment? Does have spring loaded idlers.

Lil Giants

This china hoe DOES now come with spring loaded idlers?

Tracks too tight would only matter if there were alignment issues with driven gear/rollers/idler wheel... could cause some unnecessary load on the motors, but not enough to destroy the gearheads.

Can't see your pics... some members use attachment photos & the pics will show up, sorta. I'm not sure how it works; I've always used an external photo host site to photo link pics to forums...

TheBennyB

Yes, it has sprung idlers now. I have the latest version 1.5. Not sure why the pics aren't loading up. I've never had to use an external service, may have to here I guess. Good to know on track tension.

Mine is 1.5 version and it did not have sprung adjusters on it, I had to make my own, also if you run it in clay or dirt that packs easy it will destroy your motors and break tracks.

Interesting. So is mine a prototype or demo model hence the busted up planetaries? We'll never know I'm sure.

I'll give it a try just so everyone can see these planetaries straight out of the box.

Couldn't get photobucket to work so made the pics smaller and they kinda work. Wire not installed and planetary. You can see shavings and busted off teeth in the grease on the cap and of course the broken teeth off the gear. No joy.

Photobucket isn't loading my pics atm either, must be a site problem... which happens on occasion.

I see your attached photos now... wow, quite obvious couldn't be bothered to properly/carefully mesh the gears during assembly & crushed them together.

Your last pic looks like a looper/jumper wire & should be inserted into 3rd terminal from the left... the exposed wire doesn't look to be soldered either, just twisted up ... what a bunch of rookie fools... just makes me sick to see this company put out the trash they do in this hobby

Wow, that sucks! Clearly that wasn't checked before it was shipped. No quality control there. Hopefully they send you new parts ASAP although they shouldn't have been needed in the first place if it was checked.

Yes I see, have been through this before, one on each side and another again. Finally decided to go with the upgraded system of RC4WD and these work good. I think Cooper bought the upgrade to but he dident think they had the power of stock, but I sure do?

The stock ones are not designed to last with the torque and resistance of the tracks in dirt, they work for a while but eventually start to bust teeth, same with the turntable motor and planetary.

Really to bad this was already messed up right when you recieved it. Make sure you E-Mail them back about the problem they will replace the parts for free.

Yea I already tinned and got the jumper in place. 2nd planetary is even worse. I only counted one existing tooth on the final gear. Hope to get some replacements once I hear back from Tang and RC4WD. Would love to know what happen to these. Wonder if it was the 8 year old's first day on the job that does the "tested before shipping." Moved it a foot heard some crunching and said yup....good to go. If nothing else it's provided me some laughs and a crash course on how this clone goes together.

Have heard good and bad about the brushless conversion. More speed but less control. Think I'm going to hold out until the hopeful release of the Soyland upgrade.

Haven't heard of the Soyland upgrade unless that's Rimrocks upgrade?

Same here waiting to see Rimrock's track motor upgrade...from the video he posted it seems to work great!

That's the same upgrade, that's correct) Soyland is my 'brand', and surname, Rimrock my 'artistic' name here at the forum;) I've put some notes regarding the brushless kit versus the brushed motor kit I offer in my thread. The machine in the video used to have the brushless kit but the owner changed to my upgrade. Main issues where the speed of the brushless, 'was that an tracked excavator overtaking my truck..what just happened?' ) With a high top speed it get more difficult to operate the tracks smoothly and with good power at slow speeds. In addition he had difficulties getting the ESC 'parking brake' for the motors to function, stopping the tracks from rolling during excavating, so he was a bit frustrated about things and we got our heads together to develop some optional upgrade motors. So he has kind of 'upgraded the upgrade motors' on that machine )

RC4WD is sending me new track motor units. No real matter though as I have a set of Rimrock's track motor upgrades on the way and will probably still be here quicker. Thanks again for all the responses/advice on this.

Yes, have looked at that thread. But did RC4WD make good on the damage? I am seriously considering one.

If they did, how long did response to your notice take, and how long to get the replacements from them.

This thread concerns me about purchasing this excavator. Maybe not the right decision if I have to spend $300 out of the box to make it work right.

I'll let Benny answer that as my motors waren't damaged on mine (Ver. 1.5)

RC4WD replaced both track motor units after sending them some pics. Took around 2 weeks to receive.
