Had started drawing something up a while ago and just got some time a few weeks ago to start making some parts for a drum screen.

and then skip way ahead...I didnt take any pictures during this time as i was in high speed production mode..

I have a few different speed motors im going to try once it is operational. The 51 rpm gear motor shown turns at a nice scale speed but might be a bit too slow...will see.

If i ever get my junk up and running i needed a purpose besides just digging holes in the ground, So i also started piling up some dirt to have somewhere to set the screen up. Will start a new thread in the Construction Co page once im open for business..:)

Oh and the shaker pan seems to work well with a 970 rpm gear motor attached. I tried 3 different speeds and of course faster was better.

I had started to run the D10 around (first time in the dirt) and grading the ramp that goes up to the top and was happy with its performance, and was gonna take some vid when this happened.. :(

Have the parts to fix it now,so will hopefully get it back outside soon.
Thanks for looking.

If i hit view image, it sends me to a google login page. Is there a way you can set images to public?

Ok, giving Imgur a try. Seems like google photo was generating ridiculously long html and maybe screwing things up. Hope this fixed the problem.

looks great now. what belt are you using to spin it? Also on the drum is it ribbed for the bet or just tension grip spins it?

Thanks, I went with a timing belt with teeth and printed a gear to slide over the drum. Got the belt from servocity. Also switched to a 100 rpm gear motor which sounds really fast but looks to be just right. Still trying to finish a few things before I start testing with dirt. The rollers need to be machined out of alum next and going to use a Picoboo prop controller to run the motors. They are pretty neat because you can program sequences and use lots of different triggers to start the operation. I've used them in the past for Halloween props that work off 12v wiper motors. They also play sound files you can load. For even more realism I might try to record some machinery sounds from around our shop and mix them together. For example, record the lathe starting with the chuck on a high rpm, which winds up for a few seconds and use that every time the trommel is triggered to start.. I'll have to play around with it.

Spring blocks and new rollers are machined. The initial spring setup was crude but was helpful in getting an idea what the movement was going to be like. Determined a stronger rate spring was needed to handle more weight in the hopper. Also added a heavy counter weight to the shaker motor to increase agitation due to the stiffer springs. Wired up and painted...Works well, Test video attached.

Are the footers on that height adjustable, or do you need to level the site first?

Thanks Jim, didn't really plan that I was just setting it down on my way to the barn and grabbed the spray can from the garage before I painted and decided to snap a before shot.. before grabbing it again. Worked out well I guess.

Thank you! Looking forward to dusting off the Vario and getting some dirt dumped in this thing.

Thank you, that's a good observation. I didn't make them adjustable at all as I figured the whole structure needed to be mounted to a platform which it is ( plywood base) and the concrete blocks add enough weight to the whole thing to keep it still. It tends to vibrate quite a bit from the shaker motor. So I'll have to level the site where it will be set up.

Jason,
I just watched the video again and went thru the build thread, very cool!
Did you start with a scale/plan in mind when you drew it up? Do you plan to park dump trucks under it, or separate the piles with concrete barriers and then load out with a wheel loader or possible use roll off dumps?
How tall is it overall and if you are scale I assume you are trying to match the bruder and tamiya stuff?
I'm just trying to figure out a few of those things before I try to hack something together.
Did you consider a jaw crusher for part of this setup? I wonder how hard it would be to build something in that scale and have it perform well?
Thanks!

Jim, The first thing i wanted to do was make sure that i could dump into the hopper without any issue so measured the width of buckets on my machines. Then yes like you mentioned, i wanted to be able to park trucks under the drum or just use the front loader to move material out. Thats why its so tall at 23" to the top of the bin and 30" wide on the outer legs. I plan to build conveyors to stick under the drum as well for stock piling...Havent got that far yet though. One thing i wish i wouldve done was make the shaker bin angled so a screen could be layed on top to catch any really large clumps. I may address that in the future if i find its a real problem. The passage from the bin to the shaker pan is smaller so that would keep anything too large from going into the drum anyway..
A crusher would be cool, Prob not too difficult. I did look at a few online before starting this but wanted to sort by size because i was interested in building a road using asphalt grindings i have..Thats what got me started down this path..
I try to scale everything to 1/15 to work with the Bruder and Tamiya stuff. Heres a few poser shots with Bruder and Ertl 1/16 stuff.

Nice job on the trommel!
Off topic, are you going to just paint the mdf walls in your shop?
Have done the same in my new shop so just curious, I'm about to paint my mdf boards this weekend.

Thank you. I tried capturing the feel of an older plant maybe built in the 50s, similar to one at a gravel pit we used to haul out of when I used to drive.
I posted a vid link above with the sound. Ended up taking sound clips from YouTube videos of electric motors, locomotive and a rock crusher and mixed them together.

Kalle, thanks. I had thought about painting the walls last year when I built that room but never got to that point yet. Lightening up the walls would be nice to brighten up the place. What color you thinking? Spray or roll? White would show the least amount of texture on the mdf.

Ok I see.
I'm going to paint them in a white color, I will use a roller to paint.
It will lighten up the room quite a lot I think. I can send you some pics when I'm done, I'll send you a pm.

Have you considered offering the trommel as a kit or rtr ? Not many folks have a trommel that looks and functions this well. Could be an item of high interest.

Thanks guys. I have considered it like some of the other projects. May need to upgrade a few things to try to make this a quicker process. No clue what a reasonable price would be.. pretty big item..
