This is a build of a Hiab 1058 loader crane. It will be mostly made out of steel and brass.
I don't have any truck to put it just yet

As this is a quite large crane, the cylinders are big. Both main cylinders have 26 mm pistons and the piston rod is 18 mm.

For the contours I'm running at 300mm/min, and fairly small cuts, around 0,3-0,4mm. The main problem is heat generation, I only have a mist coolant on my machine, so it's not as effective as proper flood coolant.

There any reason why you have choose steel over aluminum ?
I'm about to buy a Chinese knock off lampert welding machine and milling aluminum is way more easier on my cnc router... I'm scare the welding of aluminum is going to be bad. Seen some picture of peoples successfully weld with aluminum with those kind of machine. I think it was one of the German forums.

Thanks for the advice. Do you have any idea what kind of teflon tape it was, the only one I know is for sealing pipes, but that might not be the correct one.

That's looking incredibly wicked, can't wait to see this working!

I'd guess the Teflon tape used on sliding parts like that would be something like a Nitto Permacel p-421. It's a silicone adhesive backed smooth sheet of PTFE 5Mil thick. Most of what i've messed with is 1" wide.

Ptfe = PolyTetraFluoroEthylene = Teflon is the brand name.
Let me know if you can't track any down...

PTFE is the actual name of the material used in Teflon. Teflon is just a brand name that stuck.

I used electrical shrink tube with success, but this is relatively thick and so requires to be considered at the design step...

Hi Ari,

Actually it is these plates I was wondering about:

The normal round ones would act as bushings/bearings, I think, but I dont understand why some of them are oblong with that extra bolt in them.

Hey Hemi,

Build is top quality as usual! I assume you are using a TIG to weld? If so what thickness is the steel and how many amps are you running?I just picked up a TIG and have lots to learn!

Hemi1966
04-20-2020, 12:21 PM
It all comes to that where they like the movement to happen. If the cylinder mounting pin is fixed to the boom, there's a bushing in cylinder where the rotation happens. With those freely floating pins, I guess there's bushings in all of the joints.

I use 2 mm steel on the column and the first boom. The first three telescopes are 1 mm and the rest I will made of 0,5 mm steel.
The Tig welder I have is this one, but an older modell :

https://www.schweisstechnik-lampert.de/en/products/model-making/m280

It does not show the actual amps, just a percent value, so no idea :)

I studied how they arrange the oil delivery to the extension cylinders on the full size crane, and I realized they come up with a clever solution.

The oil is run trough the piston rod to the next cylinder. There's apparently two holes running all the way inside the rod from each side of the piston and out of the the top of the rod. If you look closely at this picture you'll see what I mean. There's no rubber hoses, just hard lines.

Unfortunately that's not possible to accomplish in this scale, the rod is only 4 mm thick and over 150 mm long. It would have made everything so much tidier:(

I got the parts for the extension cylinders done. The o-ring grooves on the cap for the piston rod sealing were quite difficult to machine as the hole diameter is only 4 mm. My grooving tools minimum hole size was 4,1 mm, so I had to do some grinding to get it fit.
I also got the rest of the cylinder brackets machined.

Beautiful machining, that's coming along great! Touch them with a deburring tool and those cylinder parts are like jewlery.

Any luck on finding the sliding teflon tape, or does it look smooth enough you might not want some?

Post 49, i think the oval bushing plates on the real ones are set up to be either pin-retainers or anti-rotation locks. They usually do step cuts and different sized bushing holes if it's retaining. If it's rotation there's some offset between holes and pin diamater so it clocks the pin in the bore to slow down wear.

I'm trying to go without any sequencing valves, and hope that the order the oil goes to cylinders, will extend them starting from the first/largest extension.
The plumbing is going to be difficult enough already in this way:)

frizzen

If it does decide it needs help to sequence the segments correctly, you could probably make it work some little plates with a 'metered orifice' installed at hose connections, or making a 'calibrated crimp' in a hard line.

That's some pretty micro welding. I wish i were that good at full size.

Did you say you were going to use a sequencing valve, or that you didn't plan on it? Without a sequencing valve, whichever section moves the easiest is gong to be the section that moves first. Path of least resistance and all that.

I don't think there's room for sequencing valves. They should be located on the boom, or other wise I would need a ton of more tubing. I can adjust the movement sensitivity on each segment with a nylon set screws though. They are meant to adjust the side play of the segments. Will just have to wait and see how is going to work.

Hi guys, it's been a slow progress with this, but I got something done.
I got the slew motor mounted, and made some brackets to mount the crane to frame.

Very interesting method for anchoring tie-downs. Never seen that before. Your idea or is that method actually used on trucks where you live?

I don't know how common this method is, but the truck that I've been using as a reference have it, so I decided to use it.

Here are the 3d printed mud guards.
I also got back working with the support legs. I was first thinking that I use two separate cylinders for the two sections,
but now I'm considering one cylinder with steel wires and pulleys. Both options are hard to make due the lack of room inside the square tubing.

Do you hone the cylinderpipe yourself?

I have never felt the need to hone the cylinders, the pipe I've been using has very smooth surface, it's almost like a mirror finish.
