Hey y'all,

I've been wanting a King Kong RC ZL-130 for quite some time. The detail looks amazing and it looks like it could be a fun rig that looks like it may fit proportionally with 1/14 trucks, though it claims to be 1/12th scale. So I picked one up and it showed up this afternoon.

They make a version with a 5th wheel and one with a wooden bed. I got the former.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuff/Scaler-Pics-and-Videos/Zil-130/i-HhhCXBJ/0/4381370d/XL/IMG_1106_HEIC-XL.jpg

I was surprised that I could find so little info. on these online. So I figured I'd share my thoughts thus far through the assembly process. Overall, I'm pretty darn impressed! There's so much metal and much of it is die cast. And those fuel tanks? Machined aluminum! The wheels are aluminum, as well, and the tires are a much softer material than the standard Tamiya tires. The rear axle has an open diff and while I haven't cracked it open yet, it appears to have a 2.6:1 ratio. The leaf spring packs are plastic and surprisingly compliant. The build quality is certainly not Tamiya quality, but for what you get I wasn't disappointed. Everything hasn't lined up perfectly, but it's been better than I anticipated. Anyway, here's pics of the process thus far.

So my plan for it? Honestly, I'm not yet sure. I'd really like to make it into some sort of vintage US truck. It shares remarkable similarities to a 1956 International so maybe I'll make it into one of those? Maybe I'll leave the body stock? Maybe I'll convert it to a 4x4?

And here's a couple pics to show the scale of the truck and chassis.

I like the look of the older trucks I've been thinking about the King Kong just haven't pulled the trigger yet, to many other projects in line.. Looking forward to seeing this one done...It looks pretty big next to the Tamiya

Tommy R

Yeah, it does look a bit big, but I think it's close enough so it won't look too out of place next to Tamiya rigs. That's my hope anyway!

I've got some build updates to share...

I got the 80t HH motor installed and also installed a Savox steering servo (not pictured).
https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuff/Scaler-Pics-and-Videos/Zil-130/i-V8dHT4C/0/8d3d2a99/XL/IMG_1128_HEIC-X4.jpg

By the way, the fifth wheel is on sliders so you can move it fore/aft. It only locks into the rearmost position, but I'll change that so I can move it forward a bit. Should help with wheelying with heavy loads. It also has a handle to release the kingpin.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuff/Scaler-Pics-and-Videos/Zil-130/i-KFP5Zkq/0/551ddb5e/XL/IMG_1126_HEIC-X4.jpg

And when's the last time you saw rubber shock bushings on an RC vehicle? Cool!
https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuff/Scaler-Pics-and-Videos/Zil-130/i-ms6FPFD/0/7eb77ae0/XL/IMG_1129_HEIC-X4.jpg

In stock form the intent is to have the drag link go from the servo to the driver's side spindle. I don't like this, but fortunately, the curved mount that attaches the drag link to the spindle is removable so I swapped it to the passenger side. I had to get creative with the servo arm and a "custom" drag link, but I like the outcome.

Next up was to address the very open diff.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuff/Scaler-Pics-and-Videos/Zil-130/i-hz979Zz/0/547c25c5/XL/IMG_1130_HEIC-X4.jpg

Very small snap ring pliers are needed.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuff/Scaler-Pics-and-Videos/Zil-130/i-WhkJLsN/0/cd1ff1ce/XL/IMG_1132_HEIC-X4.jpg

Familiar looking.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuff/Scaler-Pics-and-Videos/Zil-130/i-j7ZgKJB/0/c44e8a00/XL/IMG_1137_HEIC-X4.jpg

I cleaned off the old grease and installed some Bad Horsie diff goop. Works much better now, but not fully locked.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuff/Scaler-Pics-and-Videos/Zil-130/i-BWt3BxH/0/61d586e7/XL/IMG_1138_HEIC-X4.jpg

Looks like ample room under the hood for a basic electronics setup. Probably has room for a Beier unit, but I'll need to determine where I want to put the speaker and battery.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuff/Scaler-Pics-and-Videos/Zil-130/i-RRxFkNG/0/643a3042/XL/IMG_1143_HEIC-X4.jpg

Now a bit of bad news. I got the body put together and the hood was very warped. I've reached out to Asia Tees and to King Kong RC to work on a replacement. I will likely also try to heat/bend this one back into position.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuff/Scaler-Pics-and-Videos/Zil-130/i-MMVkvSQ/0/5b471ab0/XL/IMG_1122_HEIC-X4.jpg

Other than the warped hood, I'm still pretty impressed with this thing. No, it's not perfect, but it's pretty darn good. Now that it has a bit of weight in it, it even has respectable articulation!

And yes, I've begun looking into the possibility of putting a TLT in the front. I'd change the color, of course. :)

That truck's already looking pretty nicely detailed!
With that condition of hood i'd be about tempted to heatgun straighten and probably dent it up, then that do that battered rusty patina thing...

I know someone had one of those cabs on a truck at a lebanon IN meet a while back, and it didn't really look out of scale with the Tamiyas.

Cool box art. What do you think of the "Highly fine parts" and "Strong driving force"? Does it really "needs to assemble by yourself", or can you have someone watch and help?

When we had a warped slot car chassis we would drop them in some boiling water for just a few seconds them get them out and put some weight on them to straighten them out.... with the curves in the hood it might be a challenge but just hold it flat until it cools.
I really like the way it's turning out, looks like it has plenty of detail to me...

Uh oh, I wonder if the King Kong police will be after me for sharing my progress pics?? LOL!

I've considered the patina look, but kinda want to do my rendition of a restoration this time. It'll be old school looking, that's for sure.

I'll try it, but as thick as the hood is and with those curves, it'll definitely be a challenge!

Of course! I considered doing something simliar, but figured this'll be my short wheelbase rig and I'll likely convert it to 4WD. I plan on a Globeliner soon, though, but it'll remain RWD.

Cool project!

Thanks!

I started filling the holes in on the back of the cab. Still debating what other body mods I want to do. I've determined this looks pretty close to a 1956 International S-120 so that's what I'm going to pretend it is. :) I won't do much to the body, but just a thing or two to make it more reminiscent of a corn binder.

A little skim of filler and some more sanding and these holes should be a thing of the past.

Have been working on the Zil a bit and doing some bodywork. These light holes annoy me so they're going away. They also don't fit with my eventual plan for this truck. So...

Been out of town for a few weeks with the new job, but when I returned I decided to move forward with making this thing a 4x4. I mean.....it was inevitable, I guess. LOL Anyway, since I pulled the TLT out of my 6x6 Pete I decided to give it a new life in the "International". I picked up a King Kong leaf spring kit from ebay and used F350 leafs and then drilled and/or tapped some holes in the frame (some existing holes were re-used). You can see some of the parts still need the blue paint removed.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuff/Scaler-Pics-and-Videos/Zil-130/i-fNnJxtC/0/5024890e/XL/IMG_1301_HEIC-XL.jpg

The front hole for the hanger was already there. I just tapped it for a 3mm. The second hole is angled down simply to avoid interfering with other holes on the frame.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuff/Scaler-Pics-and-Videos/Zil-130/i-pwSgn4v/0/a635c70b/XL/IMG_1302_HEIC-XL.jpg

I did similar in the rear and re-used an existing hole. This was after I drilled a new hole that didn't work quite as planned. :)

For those who are curious, I really wanted to use the orig. wheels, but the fronts are bearing and I needed hexes. So I have a set of rear wheels on order and I basically only plan on using the hub from the set and will put them on the front axle. Anyway, here's a few pics with the body on.

New rear wheels showed up today. Turned out they're machined aluminum, as opposed to the stamped steel wheels that came with the kit. The long hub is also integrated so it's good I don't need to use these up front.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuff/Scaler-Pics-and-Videos/Zil-130/i-KJGxvZP/0/a7fdd9fb/XL/IMG_1313_HEIC-XL.jpg

This is now how the rear looks. The 8 bolts in the center hold a cover over a conventional nylock underneath. I plan to replace all the hardware with scale hardware from Locked Up RC.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuff/Scaler-Pics-and-Videos/Zil-130/i-62dhpnD/0/09d66c7c/XL/IMG_1316_HEIC-XL.jpg

The front uses the old rear hex hub to attach to the TLT axle. A conventional nylock nut is recessed in there. On the ground is the hub/nut that came for the original bearing hubs.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuff/Scaler-Pics-and-Videos/Zil-130/i-82KSrjC/0/87ce3fc8/XL/IMG_1317_HEIC-XL.jpg

Now the original hub/nut is purely for decoration. I really like how far the hub sticks out. Makes it look much more authentic to a driven front axle...especially one from ages ago.

I'm loving the way this thing is looking! The front wheel/tire/hub combo just look spot on. I even love how the tire is clearly a bit too wide for the older, narrow wheel!

I found a problem with the rear suspension tonight. You see, the primary leaf spring pack is relatively soft, but once the overload springs make contact with the perches on the frame the suspension stiffens to the point where it doesn't feel like it moves at all. And even at ride height the overload spring is just starting to make contact.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuff/Scaler-Pics-and-Videos/Zil-130/i-czkP47D/0/03ea0093/XL/IMG_1322_HEIC-XL.jpg

After some experimentation, I found out the issue is actually at the rear shackle. As the suspension compresses and the shackle swings rearward, the shackle was making contact with the mount on the chassis. It just so happens to make contact at the same time the overload springs touch their perches. So that was merely coincidental.

It may be tough to tell, but I clearanced the shackle, but in order to remove the interference I had to remove one of the chassis mount's holes. 3 should be fine....I hope! LOL
https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuff/Scaler-Pics-and-Videos/Zil-130/i-dSfwVtd/0/4471ff7e/XL/IMG_1324_HEIC-XL.jpg

Now the rear suspension has full movement and it'll compress until the overload springs invert and make contact with the main leaf pack. Another option would've been to move the rear shackle mount rearward a bit.

A couple pics of the chassis painted and assembled. Still need to get a drag link in there and I may tweak the spring rates a bit more, but so far I'm liking what I'm seeing. The suspension is a bit stiff and doesn't have much travel, but that's pretty scale so maybe I'll leave it as is.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuff/Scaler-Pics-and-Videos/Zil-130/i-H2tG5Zv/0/6c1462a8/XL/IMG_1335_HEIC-XL.jpg

And here's something I'm open to input on. I need to determine a color for this thing. I want it to look like a vintage restoration so an older style and color is preferred. My only requirement is not blue. I always seem to paint my rigs some form of blue and I want something different! Here's some examples of what I'm considering. Let me know if you have any cool color schemes I should consider. :)

That's a tough one 'cause back in the day colors weren't flashy they were more utilitarian, unless the owner had something custom done after he bought it.
Red was always classic, and Blue but we already know that ones out LOL. Black, Tan and even Brown ... You know a brown and tan 2 tone might look pretty cool... Maybe a rootbeer brown metallic with some shade of tan fenders and accents...just a thought...

I'm kinda seeing it in a 2-tone. Nice, but work clothes. With body color like maybe either Green or Grey?

White roof, color from drip rail to beltline, white below beltline, color fenders, white bumpers & trim.

White above beltline, color below, white bumpers & trim.

Then maybe some lettering or logo on the doors?

Great minds think alike! Nothing says vintage truck like white-plus-a-color-that-was-in-your-grandma's-kitchen (think mint green, or or like a brick red, or ...) Do a Google images search for "60's two tone truck" {decade was arbitrary) and you'll see what I mean.

And yeah, logo with faux business name would be fantastic! (Says the guy who can't paint for squat =)) If you're a Top Gear fan, you could do "Peniston Oils" or "Larsen Biscuits", or "Clarkson Hammond May Sodium & Eels, Esq". If you're not into those idiots, even just the family name as a farm store or something would be spiffy.

Now I wanna do like a 40's or 50's COE truck. Dangit.

I appreciate y'all's input! It sounds like we're all pretty much on the same wavelength. :) My initial plan was to replicate this truck's paint, possibly with a bit more white:
https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-fVJ3fgP/0/XL/i-fVJ3fgP-XL.jpg

I even picked up some Tamiya Coral Teal (or whatever it's called). But I felt it was too close to blue and I really want to change my trend of blue vehicles. It's also too close to the color of my Defender D110. Told ya I have an issue with too many blue rigs!
https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-r8Hg8Tc/0/XL/i-r8Hg8Tc-XL.jpg

My plan was always some sort of two tone with a primary color (TBD) along with a white or off-white. I don't want any metallics, though. I don't think it would look right as metallics weren't common on trucks in the '50s. I was leaning to red/white like the truck below (but with a gloss finish), but I'm rather intrigued by the brown/tan idea!
https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-2XXtw4d/0/XL/i-2XXtw4d-XL.jpg

One thing to note... It's going to be difficult to paint the grill like an IH given the shape of the Zil's front end. So I was leaning toward painting the whole front clip in white.....like this, unless someone has a better idea?

Looks like on a lot of them, just the horizontal bars that were done white

What if you were to spray the whole nose panel white, then mask off the sections inside the recessed headlight surrounds and try to mask the grill at the fender/grill crease? So the fenders are color

Tie the white nose into another white area kinda like this?

Yeah, I'm still not exactly sure how to get the look I'm after. And I'm not confident that I'd be able to mask the paint scheme cleanly enough, especially with all the curves on this front end. Maybe I'll look for a different style of paint scheme. Perhaps moving the beltline to the bottom of the hood? Bottom one color, top another? And perhaps the roof could be white? I've got to do some searching to get some inspiration because forward progress on this thing is stalling until I get the paint done. Hmmm.....

Why must I continually torture myself? So the new hood from Asia Tees showed up and it's perfect. And then I was doing some research on 2 tone paint schemes and I think I have a plan. Well, that's the good news. Oh, and here's a quick pic of the hood. I'll need new magnets to get it to sit securely.

Well, modifying the hood didn't take long! Removed the peak from the hood and also started the nose modifications to make it look more like a '56 binder. The scallops on the side of the Zil hood will remain. That would be too much hassle to remove them. Right?? :o

I agree about the scallops so they'll very likely remain. But nope, it won't be green and white, mainly 'cause green is too close to blue. I want to mix is up a bit and that's what will happen. In fact, I'll be breaking one of my criteria for this build, but "rules" were made to be broken, right? LOL I haven't completely confirmed the colors or paint scheme yet. I need to spray a couple test pieces first, but here's a few hints at what's inspiring me now:

Okay, gents, give me your suggestions! Below is the essentially paint *scheme* I'm going with, but the colors are TBD. There will be a bottom color (everything below the hood) and there will be an upper color (hood up to and including the roof). Not sure about painting the top of the roof separately like in the pic. I'm also needing to decide on wheel color, if any.

Tan top, brown bottom, white wheels?
White top, turquoise bottom, white wheels?
White top, grey/silver bottom, white wheels?
White top, grey/silver bottom, red wheels?
Cream top, tan bottom, white wheels?
Cream top, gold bottom, white wheels?

Let's hear some ideas. I need inspiration!! :D:D

Since space in this thing is rather limited and I plan on running a Beier sound unit, I ran out of space for the battery. I was hoping to avoid it, but I had to resort to building a "toolbox" to house the battery, a 3s 2700mah. It's made of styrene with a diamond plate veneer. :) I'll be adding magnets to secure the lid and painting it black after I do some final touches to it.

Ugh. So despite making the battery box as low and short as I could it's simply going to interfere with the nose of the trailer on anything, but the flattest of terrain. And since this thing is 4 wheel drive, I expect it to see its fair share of undulating terrain. So I have to figure out another plan. Here's what I'm dealing with....

Space under the hood is limited. Keep in mind there's a motor and trans in the middle.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuff/Scaler-Pics-and-Videos/Zil-130/i-cfPBkBR/0/abf98da2/L/IMG_1553-L.jpg

This is the stuff that needs to find a home in the truck.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuff/Scaler-Pics-and-Videos/Zil-130/i-fMNn6sq/0/dbac8255/L/IMG_1550-L.jpg

The speaker was intended to go here, under the bench seat.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuff/Scaler-Pics-and-Videos/Zil-130/i-LWQWBTN/0/a55a3ac8/L/IMG_1551-L.jpg

Battery is just too thick to fit in there so a new battery would likely be needed if I put it here.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuff/Scaler-Pics-and-Videos/Zil-130/i-Xh6Wmhb/0/63cf9be3/L/IMG_1552-L.jpg

Yessir! Regular cab with a full interior doesn't leave much room!

Tommy R
07-02-2021, 02:22 PM
Here's a trailer attached showing the interference with the toolbox. On flat surfaces it's fine, but any kind of incline and the trailer gets into the box, especially when turning.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuff/Scaler-Pics-and-Videos/Zil-130/i-ZThdn6p/0/86d69390/L/IMG_1571-L.jpg

So I may have come up with a decent idea... What if I put the ESC and sound unit under the seat like this?
https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuff/Scaler-Pics-and-Videos/Zil-130/i-wbRNZQ4/0/b052c89e/L/IMG_1566-L.jpg

It'll be tight, but I may be able to squeeze both the speaker and battery under the hood. No external box and easy battery swaps, but I'm not a fan of the battery sitting so close to the motor and potentially getting hot.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuff/Scaler-Pics-and-Videos/Zil-130/i-XjZcKwn/0/c037944c/L/IMG_1567-L.jpg

I also have this speaker which is quite a bit smaller, but would likely require a box to be built. Nontheless, it would take up less room than the other speaker.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuff/Scaler-Pics-and-Videos/Zil-130/i-38C54t7/0/792ae3f0/L/IMG_1568-L.jpg

https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuff/Scaler-Pics-and-Videos/Zil-130/i-99j9H4c/0/c7201589/L/IMG_1569-L.jpg

And if I did decide to build an external box for it, it could be much slimmer than the one I built before and it shouldn't interfere with trailer articulation.

Could the battery drop in between the frame rails between 5th wheel & cab?

Tommy R
07-04-2021, 01:19 PM
Well, I think I have a bit of good news. I did some experimenting with the assortment of Lipos I've got and came up with a solution....I think. :D I'm pretty confident I can fit a battery and speaker under the hood, but I'll need to get smaller batteries. Not really too big of a deal since the battery will be super easy to replace, as needed. I'll likely end up with just a 1500 mah 3s so we'll have to see what kind of run time I get out of it. I suspect it'll be reasonably long enough, but I can always revisit it down the road is more capacity is needed. I can also easily fit a 2200mah 2s if I want to castrate the poor motor. But regardless, no external box will be needed whatsoever and I really like that idea!

So I "fabricated" some super high end speaker box mounts and taped them to the firewall. These may get glued if the tape doesn't hold.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuff/Scaler-Pics-and-Videos/Zil-130/i-7fJR9zj/0/6282e345/L/IMG_1574-L.jpg

Then I taped the speaker box to the brackets. The box and brackets are angled downward to allow clearance under the hood and the speaker box is just barely not touching the motor.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Hobby-Stuff/Scaler-Pics-and-Videos/Zil-130/i-Kh3RXF9/0/bc7b8740/L/IMG_1575-L.jpg

And here is where the battery will go. I'll need to locate the rx somewhere, but I'm less concerned about that since it's pretty small.

I guess you've found a way to pay for your hobby, manufacturing high end speaker mounts ;) It's always nice when you figure out how to keep things inside the cab. There are so many factors influencing the run time, but hopefully you'll be able to get a decent amount of time.
