well guys here it is. my first king hauler and first build thread. after 2 years of wanting one i finally got one for Christmas! i have to say this is the most addictive RC i have ever had!

i am a pretty big Kenworth fan, so im hoping to build something that resembles this:

http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd408/goose_19/92156857.jpg

http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd408/goose_19/92184167.jpg

this was the first attempt at the fenders:

http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd408/goose_19/2011-12-27133119.jpg

http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd408/goose_19/2011-12-27125801.jpg

http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd408/goose_19/2011-12-27125819.jpg

i didnt like the way it was sitting, so i flipped the cab mounts around to raise the cab up, and tweeked the hood some:

http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd408/goose_19/2011-12-30162137.jpg

http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd408/goose_19/2011-12-30162152.jpg

http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd408/goose_19/2011-12-30162204.jpg

http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd408/goose_19/2011-12-29000101.jpg

i added 8mm of "height" to the hood by lowering the fenders down after matching the hood to the higher cab. also moved the axle forward, and the fenders forward so they're flush with the grill.

i plan on making it a scale 244" WB, with a 3rd lift axle and some other lighting goodies.

thanks for looking, hope you like!

Nice job on the headlights, like on my king!! I really like the work you did on the hood, good idea! I like the daytime-cab too, could be a future-project for mee, looking forward to see more pics!

thanks everyone, i appreciate the feedback, makes me want to get it done now! lol

ive ordered a few goodies off ebay (semi joe's and buddy zimms stuff) cant wait to get that stuff, and the driveline is stalled until my bearings come in. im having a bit of an issue finding stock chrome rims, i can only find one pair of duals for the lift. and of course, i forgot to order the rear hub covers for it!

i also would like to find another stock KH grill. joe had one up until i went to buy some stuff and just my luck, it was gone!

a few but not much,

my profession is getting in the way of my building!!

i got the third axle in, and thanks to kenworth_1985 i have a set of rims :D

ive made the hoop for the driveshaft for the lift axle, and because im cheap im making my frame rails, i have to trim some channel i got down lengthwise, and got almose to the end of one and my bandsaw blew a belt.

i have the design for my lift axle figured out, just need the parts.

hopefully within a few weeks i'll have some update pics up, ive already figured out my next 2 or 3 builds.....just need the time to do it!

well ive been tinkering with some alclad 2 paint i got recently. for my second crack at it im pretty pleased with the result. i put just a little too much on, but have it down for next time. heres the test peice, a hood off a 1/25th nascar;

this actually looks like the pitted/weathered stainless after a couple winters in the northern part of the U.S. or Canada lol

so now i guess ill move forward on making a grill for the W9 and see if i can paint it chrome too.

thx for lookin

got some work done on my grill last night. cut the basic shape from .080 styrene, with large holes to accommodate a 3mm nut then glued a second layer to give it the depth. i covered the side with the nuts with a piece of .020, real thin stuff and cut some vertical bars from .o6o and glues them in. i still have to make i thin edge on the outside of the face of the grill.

http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd408/goose_19/2012-01-28220241.jpg

http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd408/goose_19/2012-01-29133416.jpg

it still needs alot of finish sanding but you get the idea.
a pic of the lift axle with the hoop:

http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd408/goose_19/2012-01-29133851.jpg

also got around to taking a few pics of some other stuff, detailed the breathers, added the door "decal". got some hub covers for it, but the back ones dont fit right, so im going to have make some. the fronts work good tho.

http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd408/goose_19/2012-01-29133428.jpg

http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd408/goose_19/2012-01-29133447.jpg

im still toying with the idea of a 36"cheater bunk or something, cant decide!

thx for looking!

Wow! That's looking sweet for a first build!

Are those the fenders from the container trailer?! They look right at home on there! I've always thought it would be cool to have some double hump poly fenders other than the typical aluminum kind.

Neat truck!

Goose looks real good.. To have both.. Finish off the back of your cab like a day cab then make a either a drom floor for behind the day cab that the sleeper will fit over or do a floor head ache rack combo that the sleeper can slide over and WALA you have both.

Well, the new job getting me home every night has allowed me to finally get some work done on my truck! ive got about 95% of the body work done, its getting close!

i had to pull the lift axle for now, i wasnt happy with it, have a few ideas in mind, but hopefully Russ gets his on the shelf first! and cant wait for steves wheels either!

went with a goldish color for the frame, the cab will be dark cherry metallic with some stripes or something the same color.

The paint looks great. The masking really gave you some clean lines. What kind of tape did you use? I always seem to have problems with clean lines and bleed through. I had the best luck with Pactra masking tape!

thanks!
i actually used automotive pinstriping to mask the lines, i find 1/8 is the best for curves/bends.
also then you put masking tape over the pinstriping to cover a larger area, make sure you pull the pinstriping before the paint is too dry, leaves a nice clean line!

Your trailer's main frame is looking really nice. Great start to a drop deck! Did you cut and curve the webs off the rear rails to flow into the drop, from the rear? That's a nice touch.

thanks nate.

my machine shop consists of a scroll saw, 18v drill and some files, so it isnt anything too elaborate!
i notched the suspension frame and bent the top over a piece of 1/8" i cut out to give it the curved look of a fontaine double drop. i plan on getting some aluminum brazing supplies and trying my hand at that.

Well its update time.

re did the frame rails and traded out russ's old style air ride for the new, stretched the frame a little and added some goodies. work truck bumper and center rear bumper from russ also, the rims are IHB and the tanks i trimmed the step mounts off the stock ones and flipped them. (thanks dwayne) its still in mock up as there are a few more things to change but ive got the basics down, and it drives now! although quietly, but it does.
the pics arent the best but it was early (or late? 4am anyway) when i was taking them

thx mario, i caught the bug at clifford ;)

the drive shaft is a $11 special. if you look back in this thread i made a lift axle from some copper pipe and gorilla glue...... where i learned just how strong gorilla glue is. its a piece of 1/2" styrene tube with traxxas driveshafts glued in the ends :D

also, i spread the drives out to scale 60" spread, and made a small driveshaft the same way.

so, once upon a time, long long ago, i drew up a grill for this truck. i finally got around to sending it off to russ, and this is what i got back :D

http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd408/goose_19/2013-08-15210443_zps88d2edef.jpg (http://s1218.photobucket.com/user/goose_19/media/2013-08-15210443_zps88d2edef.jpg.html)

now somewhere along the line my crayola crayons got mixed up and the grill came out a touch long.....i think it was the program i originally drew it up with didnt agree with the milling program. not sure what im going to do about it, but even at that, it looks alot perty-er with a grill and headlights. :D

its hard to see without the backing i have yet to make, im thinkin some screen painted silver or black.

Don't worry Alan. It should be easy to modify the front-end. Just make some front metal plates to come up under the head-lights like in the this photo:

http://carsfolia.com/data_images/news/kenworth-w900/kenworth-w900-01.jpg

It should look good, help hide the spacing, and make an amazing build look just that much better.

Good luck.

You could also have the front bumper notched to fit around the bottom of the grille. Wouldn't look that out of place either. Some Kenworth trucks have such an arrangement. Your grille does look pretty nice though!

thanks guys, i dont feel as bad for goofing on it, i actually thought of both ideas too, the stainless rock guards or a gullwing bumper, but i think im going to have another one made for this one, and build a second KW, a T-800H model. looks like a W900B with a setback axle. it'll likely be my heavy spec truck, and this one will be the highway queen :D

I would just extend the fenders down and leave it alone. I looks more like W900L now they always look like the shell is long , taller and narrow. Just my 2 cents. I would like that grill with the 7 bars in it. Ed
