Hi there i recently bought a Globeliner and here are some things im working on
Here's what its starting out like
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/20120320_140414.jpg
Heres what im hoping to make
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/cabover-orange-006.jpg
I decided to try making my own fenders for it as i have a certain look i wanted to acheive overall. Heres my progress.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/20120326_125431.jpg

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/20120326_153637.jpg
Heres a mock up sitting on the truck ( not mounted or height adjusted yet)
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/20120326_154006.jpg
I used sheet styrene and a 4" pvc pipe.
I got a bunch done today and was playing around woth some ideas.
I was playing around with mount ideas but i dont like these
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/20120327_093918.jpg
Testing what it would look like with the lights in the fender instead of a bumper
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/20120327_101359.jpg
heres with the turn signal on
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/20120327_101557.jpg
Not sure im im happy with them yet but heres where im at with it. Need to figure out mounts for it still, and im trying to figure out a way that i can make my turn signal be red (thats easy) but be on with the headlights, flash for turn and brake... that way all leds in back would be red.. any ideas?
Let me know what you think.

If you are going to be using those fenders, I would suggest removing the tires..Would be a shame to cover of those bad boys and not be able to show off the tread

I am liking those lights on the bumper though

New trailer came in today!!!! Heres some pics

Heres with the new fenders on
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/20120328_204648.jpg
Now i gotta figure out a few adjustments with it... when i go to hook up the trailer my king pin hits my frame.. truck sits a little to high, or tailer too low ill prob put rubber feet on support legs. When i would make a left turn the trailer would release itself from the 5th wheel.. So i temerarily took off the auto leg retractor. (no idea whats its called) and the trailer stays on with no problems.. Still gotta find a few parts to make the truck. heres what the back will hopefully resemble when done. Ill prob have to slant the rear frame and add guide rails as well for the height issue.

Thanks for looking

Cool truck. Both the model and the 1:1 Freightliner you are using as a referance. Your fenders are looking really nice so far. One thing I have seen done with great results is to get yourself a set of the Knight Hauler's rear tail light assemblies. They have a chrome type bezel, that holds three lenses, and they look really nice. They'd be perfect for mounting on the fenders, or even off the frame of the truck.
I like the lights in the fenders..... looks kool. Overall that's a nice 1:1 there and I like your Globe.....

The truck is looking awesome. Gotta love the stretched globeliners. Where did you get the trailer from? And the trailer legs are referd to as landing gear or dolly wheels.;)

Thanks everyone.
@BRICKNICK thank you for the lesson :) The trailer i got from Semi Joes Truck Shop. Its really sturdy! its 43" long full alluminum.
@IZZY im with you i like the lights in the fenders but i may have a drop bumper made for it. Eventually when i can afford it i hope to be able to pull a "nascar" hauler from you. You make some sweet trailers!!
Still need to put lights in the trailer, make a bumper for it, paint it and make a few tweaks here and there. I may turn it into a spread axle instead of a tri-axle. havnt decided. I have a list of trailers i want. Luckily most my changes wont require a full tear down for awhile so i can run the truck while working on it.

I really like your globe, and you did a really good job on the fenders. I do agree with Alfy, I would remove the tires...it would be a shame to hide that beautiful tread. And the lights in the fenders look awsome.:D:cool:

I don't know about removing the tires, just because they are covered with fenders. I'm of the train of thought that the details always matter, even when you don't readily see them. For me, it's all about the details. You can still see the tires are not the normal run of the mill treads. The sidewall gives some of it away too. Make the people look close, and they'll be surprised if they find all these little differences and touches.

as if you needed another opinion on the tires, if it was me, I'd probably sell them off and put something else on since your going w/ the fenders. You could most likely get something else and make a few bucks in the mean time (for more parts!!!!)
I like the direction this build is taking! can't wait for more update!

Thats not a half bad idea!! Would the stock tires lower my rear end any? that may be the route i need to go to stop my king pin from smacking my frame when i back up to the trailer. i plan on adding something to the bottom of the landing gear.

Yes i like details alot! However ive been thinking about taking my drive tires and swapping for the trailer tires, poss making the trailer a spread axle in the process..
Ive searched a few places and googled, but does anyone know who makes a kit to add more lights??? how many extra lights can i add to the MFU with out any extra stuff?

So i was able to get some more work done again today. I started to make one of the 2 toolboxes im going to make for the trailer heres where im at so far with it.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/20120331_154836.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/20120331_154858.jpg
Gotta fill in some stuff on it , make hinges and a door before i can sand and paint it, but i think its turning out ok.
Also started working on the perminant mounts for the fenders and here is what i came up with. took some brass strips and drilled a hole bent it to fit in the shock mount
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/20120331_193953.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/20120331_194001.jpg
The fenders were sitting too high on the brass stips so i decided to notch out the fenders where they would sit on the mounts
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/20120331_194013.jpg
So now they sit level and nicely with a perfect fit and have full clearence with all levels of movement of the tires
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/20120331_194135.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/20120331_193845.jpg
Also had time to move the possition of the visor so it has the more agressive look to it. Sorry for the bad pics here.

Me too! I hope to finish the fenders this week unless I scrap them and order some. Hopefully I'll be able to order a few things this week from a few places to get the rebuild moving along, so I can finish the trailer. The trailer will end up getting matching fenders, rear bumper and paint as the truck. Its going to look nice when done. My goal is to finish by Indy so I can try to get it there this year. Would be my first show so I really want to make it there.

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/cabover-orange-010.jpg
So i got some brass and after a few attempts got the hang of soldering it :D here was one of the first test fits

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/DSCF6217.jpg
I noticed that the top bar was not level so i had to make a few adjustments.. Now i was trying to figure out how to attatch the stacks so i cut off the bottom curve off the stacks (ill later glue them back in the right direction) and made some mount holes to use my exsisting stock stacks with the set of bull pipes from Russ that i have.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/DSCF6220.jpg
they are not going to sit that far back was just testing fitment. here are a few pics of what it will look like after i have Russ make me some air cleaners. i used wood for a mock up.

as far as the mfu switches..I would use knight hauler steps..looks like you added a tool box on the frame and it hides the switches until you open it..:D

hmmm both of those ideas might just work! i was thinking of cutting a few holes in one of the tanks and mount the MFU control in there. I just need access to the on/off and the volume control. All other features i control from the transmitter..

I liked the 55 turn motor just fine. Had a 65 turn so i figured while the truck was apart id try it out to see the difference.. I really dont see much other then i think the 65 is a little faster.. i need to order a 9 tooth gear though... that'll help slow it down more.I cant wait to see the cleaners on there but i have to have Russ make them still hopefully i can fund those soon!
Nice job on that air intake tube rack. Love the big stacks!
Thanks! i may have Brian make me some with the right curves so its one piece and not going from big to small.... not sure yet. Right now Im using Russ's bull pipes.

Thanks! i was working on them a little yesterday but i was mainly focused on the rack so i have deminsions for Russ. I like the battery under the frame but the only thing i see bad about it is that i cant put a servo there for the 5th wheel when i add the wireless leg support kit to my trailer... Unless i get a longer frame ;) go from 25" to maybe 30" hmmmmmm:cool:

Well Since the wife put a temp freeze on part ordering for a few weeks i took some brass that i had laying around and decided to try a few things. Im quite impressed with what i came up with so far. I decided to try making some air cleaners with what i have around the house and here is what i did.
Started with 3/4 copper plumbing and a thin sheet of brass
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/20120415_225745.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/20120415_225752.jpg
Rounded the sheet brass out and limiting the solder lines
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/20120415_232326.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/20120415_232356.jpg
Took some brass tubing and Chair leg bottom. and came up with this
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/20120415_225811.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/20120415_225820.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/20120415_233521.jpg
Used some double sided tape (for mock up only will be soldered on)
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/20120416_000524.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/20120416_000535.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/20120416_000545.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b190/firepisser8104/Stretched/20120416_000601.jpg
I just need to make or find something to cap off the bottoms, and solder them on. Since the rack and aircleaners are going to be painted I decided this route as i couldn't cover Russ's sweet work with paint... There are so many thing i still need to do. Including new front bumper, rear bumper, more cab lights, side lights, new stacks (taller and angle cut) fenders, paint, and poss a longer frame still.... hmmm there still may be more then that yet to do... hope you like the update.

Hmmm that may be incorporated as you don't see them as much...
So as I was soldering the breathers to the rack one of the joints came lose from to much heat and us all crooked and messed up looking now...... So I have to either undo it and rebuild that one and hope it works the second time around or re-think the design a little.change it up with materials, maybe I'll use styrene for it all... I'll post pics of how it turned out tonight when I get home from work..

04-20-2012, 07:04 AM
I learned that when you get to the point of having a lot of soldered joints near where your soldering you need to use heat sinks, in my case on the headache rack I used a bunch of vise grips because it was all I had at the time. If you use them put a very light pressure on the part, as the brass gets hot it gets soft, to much pressure and you'll leave a small indentations.;)

Another option for you might be to simply bolt the breather canisters to the rack instead of soldering them. That way you can paint them separately, and replace them, if you ever need to.
dabears
04-20-2012, 07:31 AM
Both those options would work. I'll have to pick up some more vise grips and try that. If that doesn't work I'll go by a tap and dye set to thread the holes needed. If those don't work right then I'll have no choice to out source that part of the build lol.. Still need to figure out the rear frame slope, or notch like I call it..

So when i was tearing the truck down again i noticed something i didnt before. my back wheels although the same are not the same... 2 are 6 lugs and the other 2 are 8 lugs... the fronts are 8 lugs.... YIKES!!! but they are getting swapped out to chrome ones anyways :p as it will bother me having that difference!!!

AND WOW!!! Im loving the way this thing is going to look!!! I decided to try to keep the truck as close to the 1:1 as possible but change it a little at the same time. Im not sure what color ill end up with but it may not be orange/white.. may be red/white or take it old school with a brown/crimson scheme. anyways as usual heres some pics, cause i like seeing pics of progress to go with the words :p

That's looking good! One suggestion though. Your trailer's fenders look like they need to wrap around the wheels a little more, so they match the tractor's fenders. I like the spread axle better. Either way, it's going to look good, but it's a little easier to model the norms, rather then the abnormal. Just don't see many tri-axle trailers around the US like that. That's not to say it wouldn't fun to model, because it's unique and cool, but spread axles are just more common, and they look sweet too.

I agree about the fenders I cut them too short... Good thing I bought 10ft of the pvc pipe I use to make them :) I am going to re do them but I need to get more styrene now.
I think the frame and fenders will be painted to match the truck but the side rails will be polished. I got half of one side polished but wasn't happy with it. Too many scratch marks left in it..... May be sending those out to get polished nicely.
Tracey I agree with the tri axle but this one will be the spread, and down the road I'll to a tri As well, after I get my dump trailer! I really want one of those. Even thought about converting this one to a dump trailer..

Here in Ireland, most trailers are tri axle super singles, or tandem duallies. I NEVER see spread axles here, so to me they are really rare and unusual. I didn't realise that they were so common in Oz and the US.

I used the same way on mine.
These fenders make it look very good and the weight of the trailer (hem... mine is a bit heavy...) doesn't affect rolling.
For my part i prefer the three axles look, it make the trailer appear heavyer, but the spread looks great too!

The SS-tronyx kit was very easy to install and perfectly work. Was a bit more head scratching because of my particular configuration, but really a well designed product. The team who's produce it it also very helpful and friendly ;)

You're right.
If nothing change since I get mine, the kit for motorized legs is an option, only if you don't want the mechanical switch system from Tamiya. Otherwise, the legs systems stay connect exactly the same way than without the wireless kit.
But I suggest you contact them for verification before ordering ;)

Yes its amazing how much paint can cover up little flaws and make things look like an actual part instead of 4 diff pieces of plastic!! The trialer is on hold until i decide if im going to shorten it, change it or get rid of it. its pretty long and i dont have the right parts to convert to a spread axle properly so im not sure what route to go.. really want a dump trailer s i may shorten the frame and do some converting with a screw drive.. have not decided yet. Once i decide i already have more fenders made for either way.

Nice Globe you have their.keep up the good work, what paint ideas are you planning?
Paul
Lets just say its really cool. Im basing it off of a different 1:1 then originally planned, its not going to be exact of the 1:1 but the basic idea will be. Its going to be a tough paint job but ive got a pro lined up to attempt it, but it wont have the new paint before Indy. it'll prob go to paint after Indy or more into winter.
heres a teaser of what im going after. poss same colors but pretty close to this one ;)

Thank you!! those were the 3rd attempt for the fenders and prob not the last. I'd like to have them copied into fiberglass so they are just a hair thinner and smoother still have refining to go. (plus i HATE bondo work :( never been too good at it)
Thanks for looking!! And BTW truck is nice and clean and shiney again :D

Ha! Enough pressure and you cracked, the cat is officially out of the bag! Well, I can now understand why you are happy to ditch the existing job, as good as it is, the above concept will be earth shattering. I have still yet to see something so complex and advanced on a 1:14 model. It will be tough to pull off but if you have a pro painter on hand, it should work out pretty well. I am really looking forward to the final result.

Lol yea, its a Sweet paint scheme but it will be a pain to do and time consuming I'd imagine. May ditch the flame details depending how hard it'll be to do but it'll definitely stand out when done on a cab over. The 1:1 is a conventional. But yes I'm not to concerned scratching up the current paint job haha

Ok so heres a quick solution to an idea untill i have Russ make me a better one but kinda needed to make more room in the rear of the truck i had to get rid of the wide stock bumper. so i made this really quick and got it mounted out of brass... had i had the right cutting tools it would have turned out better.

Once i can order the new pipes those may be mounted to the rack as originally planned and they may not i havnt fully decided yet. Re wired the truck, and relocated the MFU to being mounted to the top inside of the cab going to be doing something different for sound. same sound just not the same speaker i'm testing a few options but its totally cool!! Still waiting on my LEDS for the lowboy........ then i can get that lit up. Hopefully in the next few weeks another box will arrive and then the truck should be about done before being painted. but the paints gotta wait till after indy.
Thanks for looking let me know what you think about the new rack

May sound like a dumb question ..... how do you get to the battery?
Not a dumb question at all. The cab will be put on a hinge to tilt forward like the real cabovers do so I can access everything. Buy for now there are a few options. Unscrew 4 cab screws and lift cab off or remove 2 screws holding the rack mount. I designed the rack with that in mins of using the tank mount stews for easy. Access. 3rd option is put the battery in the frame rails under the deck plate easy to get to.

Nice rack! Haha
Russ did a great job on it, but is there a way to mount it alittle more cleanly? mabe screwed to the deck plate from the bottom?
dabears
06-22-2012, 06:48 PM
Once I add the light bar on that bracket you won't notice it as much. I prob could make a mount for under the deck plate but then the deck plate would be raised in that area, currently is using the tank strap holes and screws. The cleaners have some weight to them and pull the rack backwards a little this way that is used now is sturdy and I'll be making a hinged box to square up the mount with lights in it like in the 2nd picture of the paint scheme I want (top of this page pic 2)

Ok cab is pretty much closed for good now well at least i dont need to access it anymore.. I relocated the battery again to the frame rails and moved the switches for the MFU. My speaker idea didnt pan out as i kept blowing speakers so that is a little dissapointing, so i resoldered the original speaker back in. I also started the light box to hide the rack mount.

Just about as realistic as i can get with it without making a mount on the rack and bolting the strap to the mount on the rack like on the 1:1's
What do ya think?? Ill prob make another 20 before i can get the 4 i need to be perfect...

i think outside the box for making stuff.. pop cans are too thin but soup can was good. for the flaps you could try both. I used to use a pop can to reproduce a hood and fender on a 1/25 scale car then send it into a wall... made it look like real damage from a wreck...

Leveled out the trailer tonight,re polished the front plate, and tore all the boards off... The shelving brackets are thicker then the wood so it won't work the way I hoped. I'll try grinding down some spots so it will this week. My daughter knocked my TX off the shelf it was on and broke the y training switch, lucky not needed right now, but took it apart to make sure no other damage happened.a few times after the radio when turned on would make a weird beep and all lights would flash...

So now i need input on this..... few options i can go with it
1. Make all 6 turn signals
2. Make outer 2 turn inner 4 brake
3. Make inner 2 turn outer 4 brake
5. Make all 6 brake and move turn signals to the outer 2 on the light bar on the rack mount
6. Make outer 4 turn and inner 2 brake.....
I cant decide now... PLEASE help me i dont have duel leds or all 6 would be brake and turn :D
Also i plan on tying into the trailer portion of the mfu without the MFU trailer harness. but just for the brake lights... the turn will just be spliced into the original rear turn signal wires.... does anyone know which 2 prongs on that portion of the mfu do i want???

Hey dabears, nice chop job and rear lights look great. In my opinion I would go with option #2 with turn lights on the outside.
I have the answer to your MFU question...just so happens that yesterday I removed the trailer lighting kit and can tell which wires are for brake lights. The wires are the blue and green wire. When holding the plug and looking at the wires and the connector lock tab is top side and away from you, the first 2wires starting from the left - blue , then green.
Hope this helps, truck looks sweet. One of the best COE on site!

With each thing you do to this rig it is becoming one of the sharpest looking Coe on site. The next build of the month featuring cab overs, I'm sure the voting will prove it!
One thing I would change though, I noticed the steer tires have a drive tire type tread pattern. That was one of the first things I changed on mine. I found a set on PMD that have a tread design which looks a lot more like steer tires. That's it, the rest is great.

Thank you everyone for the great responses and feedback on my truck at Indy! At Indy I installed a 4:1 and I love it! Since my radio is still down and no big shows coming soon its time to change stuff. Got a lot of changes in mind. Got some parts ordered and some in the works so here is how she looks until the next update in about a month or so. Should be drivable by the st Louis meet. :)
Are you done yet?:p

what did you use to cut the sheets of plastic that you traced the fenders with?

I used an exacto knife and patience lol. once I cut one out I used it to help trace three other side out. I now have a "template" from a sheet I cut a fender side out of that I can use to trace out and score the next one with. Hope that helps. I've seen circle cutting things at Michaels and hobby lobby as well in the scrap booking area...

WOW time to dust this off a little. Took a few mins to use the nice day out to snap a few outside shots with the new visor today with it hooked up to the lowboy. There are a few more changes yet to be completed on it and hope to have them done in the next week or so. :D
Enjoy

I might try to sand these down and just repaint them but i may just make new ones a little different or buy some of the new ones from Russ.. Haven't decided yet.
Just thought i would share my pain. I know most have been there at least once..
HMMM maybe ill just put all this on the frame i was gonna chop for the day cab and use this chasis for the daycab... Maybe ill be rebuilding this truck for the 5th time afterall!!

oh wow, i feel your pain dude! but like you said, decision time to rebuild or replace.
as for the orange peel effect, you will always have orange peel in paint. just need to cut and polish after to get the mirror shine. take practice to get it right on styrene, but when done holy smooth! 2500 paper to start with. then final cut with 3000 sand paper. then 3 stage polish compounds with low to really low polisher rpm's. takes time but well worth it.
