View Full Version : Tracy Reiks 1978 A Model KW. "GETTING THERE"
Tamiya Cowboy

Well for those of you that like to play spot the project in my pictures here is one that I have been slowly working on the last 2 years and now it has my full attention. Good friend of mines 78 A Model going to try to copy it as much as I can I always have to change some minor things but that is it..
Here is a pick of the truck I am copying..
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/Truck%20Picks/012-7.jpg
Not going to bore everyone with a step by step of how to do a frame so here it is..
Ok rolling chassis.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/Truck%20Picks/001-7.jpg
Parts List:
Russ's 4 bag air ride
Russ's Cross Members
Russ's Hanger Bearing Cross Member
My Custom Rear Bumpers By Russ
Russ's Tank Hangers
Custom Profile Fuel Tanks By Russ
Steves Sweet Rims and Air Clears and Texas Blank
Travis's KWhopper Gril
Jon's Big 8's..
The rest I am making my self..So here is a good starting point. Got my .80 plastic on the roof so I can round the roofs more.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/Truck%20Picks/001-7.jpg
Air Ride.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/Truck%20Picks/002-10.jpg
Cross members
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/Truck%20Picks/003-10.jpg
Rear Bumper and Taper
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/Truck%20Picks/005-8.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/Truck%20Picks/006-6.jpg
Steve's wheels and Texas Blank
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/Truck%20Picks/004-9.jpg
Ok roofs rounded and stacks mounted. Notice how the stacks sit up to the sleeper like they should and not over hang the door.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/Truck%20Picks/007-5.jpg
This is why I make this plate that bolts to the stock mount holes and pushes the stack back to where it should be. This has also been done on the snow truck and the black and red Pete.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/Truck%20Picks/008-9.jpg
Ok many have ask about my 5th wheel plates and the little bar sticking out the side well this is how I do it instead of the set up tamiya uses that is not scale looking by any means
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/Truck%20Picks/009-6.jpg
Now here is something I would change normally is the tread plate I would go polished stainless but went with the PMD plate and rolled the edge of it to match the frame.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/Truck%20Picks/010-5.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/Truck%20Picks/011-3.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/Truck%20Picks/012-6.jpg
Then tranny mounted and I made my custom drive shafts like I do..
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/Truck%20Picks/013-4.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/Truck%20Picks/014-4.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/Truck%20Picks/015-3.jpg
If you Notice in the picks I have used the new scale bolts from RC4WD every where you can see a screw I wish I could put these on all my finished trucks but that would mean alot of repainting  but they are great looking..
Ok poser shots as I am waiting on a few parts plus I am building some and I have some still to mount that will take some body work so check back..

Had a low battery glitch (I think) pop a yoke on a driveshaft today, I have the u-joints like yours so where's the best place to get those? May need some spares looks like...

These are RC4WD heavy plastic shafts I have not heard of them breaking but there is always a first they are on there web-sight and then I mod them with the stainless tubing and make them longer.

Thanks much I fireguard for sure you would notice the little changes that make a big difference in the look.. on that 5th wheel mod I forgot to say that the brass rod is bent in a loop with a brass washer braised on to it then it is screwed to the 5th. Keep a eye out I have some more detail you will like..
Looking good Paul. How do you lower the sleeper to match up with the of the cab? I like how you moved the stacks back, I noticed that on your other truck.

Thanks much dmess.. on the sleeper I cut 3/8 of a inch out above the rain channel around the sleeper just above the rivets then I glue it all back together.

They are 3mm just like all the stock screws and I bought all the lengths they make so i am not wasting a long screw where i don't need it.

Just in case anyone noticed the tank looks like it is not sitting level its because the sleeper is not mounted..

Sweet looking rides, I like the International Transport trucks. Wade, does your truck have pete suspension on it?
Exthood359
11-12-2012, 10:13 PM
Yes it does.......
That was the thing to do in the early 80's was put a better riding suspension under the truck.
My truck was a glider when new. The owner put in a V12 detroit and Pete air ride.

Brian,
No it doesn't but I have a twin turbo to put back in it at some point in time. If I can afford to feed it.
With the right injectors and settings without getting funky it will put 800 HP to the wheels.

Ok getting somewhere again with the A Model got the test steps made for it.. I built them out of 1/4 plastic and .80 plastic and plastic tread plate. I still have to make the lower step but here is how they look so far even thou these are just proto types I am still going to repaint them and make them look the best I can till I get the new ones.

my god, that is sweet! just ordeing a load of parts from Ric at Garden Trucking, ive decided not to do a daycab, so ive got 3 inch extensions, 2 polished aluminum 105mm tanks and straps, fender blinker lights, under step lights, under sleeper lights, aluminum vortex air cleaners, 8 inch bull pipes, single head lights, universal driveshaft with hanger bearing, texas square bumper and 16 led's so far lol, just waiting on Brian for conformation on the grills :)
Oh and stylin n profilin' for the Pete front fenders
That is going to be a great build can't wait to see you start that.
Paul you done a great job on those steps. I love that red frame, it really pops! Can't wait to see the cab painted.
Thanks much Fred I'm getting close now.
Oh, that cab is looking really nice Paul! Those Kenworth style fuel tank mounts - may ask where you got them? I thought Russ was making those, but I've never seen any mention of them in his vendor section.
Thanks Alot Nate the Kw tank brackets came from Russ at the bone yard.
looks really good can't wait to see her done!

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/006-8.jpg
Made a radio antenna for the drivers side of the cab this is not a CB antenna..
Took 2 small flat head screws and took a file and V'd out the slot so the antenna wire fit in it. Then took very lite gauge copper strand wire and wrapped it around the wire and screw head back and forth.
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/007.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g276/theonlytamiyacowboy/008-4.jpg
Then brushed flux all over the head and wire then soldered it and this is what you end up with.

Hey Big D sorry I missed your comment.. Thanks much for the great comment no I am not big on selling any of my trucks I have learned my lesson it is too hard to see your builds wrecked when you sell them the owner of this truck is hot on getting it but he dont have a very good chance either..
Whats next? have to finish the Hot Irons, I have 2 other show trucks for clients I am also working on I have enuff parts to build 3 more trucks for myself then I am done building new trucks for myself just going to work on details for there on out on what I have.. I have finally reached a goal I have had for a long time so picks to come on that..

I really wish i could sit down and pick your brain on some of your technique. So many great trucks, and each one looks better then the last.
