I just wanted to show off a project that I am working on a King hauler dump truck I know that its not any new but I am working on a lift mechanism that I hope I will work without a lot of modification to the truck. It is using a Firgelli L12 servo that works real nice until you put weight in the box, so I think that I will have to use a gearmotor and a screw. Any suggestions are welcome Thanks in advance.

I talked to Ian at Firgelli a little while back about the lack of power from the L-12 and he said they are coming out with a L-16 with a lot more power. He was nice enough to send me a couple prototypes of this and WOW, what a difference!!! He said they should be on the market within a couple months, they will be well worth the wait and I think they should be enough power to dump a load of dirt.(Ian told me each one should be able to lift 40lbs.)

Thank You, I was on the Firgelli web site today and I noticed the L16 they are 12 volt. I was hoping to run this on a regular 7.2 battery pack. Ian is a real nice guy he sent me some parts to repair that servo in the picture.

The L-16 is 12 volt but I run mine on my wrecker with a 7.2 volt battery and it works fine. The new L-16 prototype will plug right in to your receiver. Those are the ones that are coming on the market in the next couple months. You are right, Ian is a very nice guy to deal with. I bought two of the L-16's, when I got them, noticed it was a five pin connection instead of 3 pin like a regular receiver plug. Called up Ian, by the next morning he emailed me to let me know he had built 2 prototypes for me and shipped them out to me that day!! Awesome dude!!!

yes it seems to lift very well, it's a little slow but i am no on the clock and there is no u joint to mess with. i am going to put set screws in so the bolts wont be sticking out.

I spent some time on the paint over the last couple of days. The white and yellow is paint the orange and black is vinyl. Now I have to finish the box and it will be ready for work. The next project will be to finish my excavator that I started many years ago.

Nice truck, and box. I like the color scheme. Did you lift the cab on this one? Looks to be sitting a little higher than usual. The scissors lift mechanism is nice. Home made, or something available through the net?
22fatcat
12-28-2013, 10:25 PM
Yes I did lift the cab i just flipped the angle brackets over. The scissor lift is one that I made, the parts were cut with a waterjet. I built a new box for it today the other one sat to high and I was not happy with my welds. i will post some pics of it soon. thanks for the comments.

Here are some photos of the new box with the side rails. They still need some work to finish them up. The new box sits lower on the frame and the bottom edge is nice and sharp.http://i979.photobucket.com/albums/ae271/22fatcat/DSCF0988.jpg (http://s979.photobucket.com/user/22fatcat/media/DSCF0988.jpg.html)http://i979.photobucket.com/albums/ae271/22fatcat/DSCF0986.jpg (http://s979.photobucket.com/user/22fatcat/media/DSCF0986.jpg.html)

Now I need to make a bumper and tail light assembly and finish off the box. Not sure if I should paint the box or just leave it raw. http://i979.photobucket.com/albums/ae271/22fatcat/DSCF0991.jpg (http://s979.photobucket.com/user/22fatcat/media/DSCF0991.jpg.html)

That looks awesome. Nice work on the new dump box! It's quite a bit nicer than your first attempt. Absolutely nothing wrong with giving things a second or third shot, when you don't get the results you want the first time.

Thanks Espeefan, I usually end up making things twice especially when bending is involved.
They are the same parts, but I was more careful when I bent them and i welded the bottom up higher.

I say leave the body raw and polish it. And just my two cents I would add cross memebers to the side of the dump box to add to the realism. That's just me being a stickler, either way it still looks great as it sits.

Hey Bricknick, the box that was my inspiration has the sides smooth like this one, Ox truck bodies makes one that has the flat sides, I went back and forth on the cross members or smooth sides. Thanks for the input its nice to get other opinions.

Do you think the screw drive works better than the Frigelli? More powerful?

PTI was using the L12 and it would lift the box nicely but if you added any weight it would not lift it. I could have relocated it to get more leverage but then it would not go all the way up. So yes the screw drive works better but its kind of slow but will lift more weight, I have not tried to see how much it will lift yet.

Well here are some more photos of the king hauler dump truck. I am very happy with the way this is turning out. This was a pretty fast build, now I can slow down and add things along the way like bumpers and lights and things like that. Now I just have to keep at it, it's only been about five years since I started the excavator that sits behind it. I now have all the parts to finish it just need to do it.

The dump truck is looking great. That's a nice lowboy trailer too. From PMD?
For radio antennas, if you have a 2.4 giga-hertz receiver, the antenna should be short enough to hide underneath the cab, without any issue. If you are using an older style 75 mega-hertz radio, you can still fit that antenna under the cab as well. Get a piece of lexan sheet, plastic sheet, styrene sheet, or anything else that is similar and not made of metal. Drill a bunch of little holes into the material of your choice and weave the antenna in and out of the holes, taking care to keep the antenna from being bundled against itself. Or you could also take a regular plastic antenna tube, run the antenna up the tube, out the end, then leave a little slack at the top, and wrap the extra down the length of tube, tightly, and make the wraps close together, but again, not over the top of itself. A piece of heat shrink tube over the wraps will keep it all tidy and in place. If you make enough wraps, your antenna tube should still be short enough to fit inside the cab or hood. Mount it horizontally, if you have to. You might notice a slight decrease in the radio reception range doing it this way, but in my past experience it's barely perceptible. Most of the time we run trucks and equipment close to ourselves so we can see the action! Decreased range, if any, shouldn't be an issue.

Susan's black Pete is a 75 MHz receiver. I connected the eyelet terminal on the end of the antenna to one of the exhaust stack mounting screws. I figured copper tubing should make a good antenna.
Our neighbourhood lots are 50ft wide and I have had the truck 3 houses down before any trouble. 150ft is lots!
