Well, I figured when I bought my KH that I would get to this eventually:rolleyes:....
I have spent the winter months making stuff for other folks(thank you for the business!) but things have slowed a little now for RCP's and summer shows and commercial fishing are approaching. This is the first time in three years that I haven't had a least one scratch build going so to say the least I have been feeling the itch to build something for myself! I don't have any major plans for this build as I will be cheating and using a Tamiya chassis. I will however, (in my usual style) be making everything else from aluminum. My plan is to build a Hayes HD dump truck from the late 50's early 60's era....

Here's what I have done since this morning...

I started out just the same as I did with my beloved 850. I traced some things out and started cutting. Then some welding and grinding. 4 hours later I have a cab....

Nate I haven't been feeling well for over a month but I don't think it has much to do with the size of this truck unfortunately.lol Yeah it is small but it's kinda fun. I think this is about as close to a scratch build as I will ever do in 1/14 though. My inner child likes bigger toys best!:D

I got a bit more done this afternoon....

Thanks...and it's not!...easy that is.LOL It's not that hard though for the most part. It takes a lot more co-ordination than MIG welding and that's where I suffer. I have a hard time keeping still enough and contaminate my tungsten...It makes me say bad words! Welding bigger pieces is easy but small stuff....

A little update from today. I made up a rad guard. some shutters, trimmed the fenders to there final shape, made the headlight mounts and guards, cut the hole in the front bumper, modified some old Clod rollbar lights that I've had in a drawer for 24 years to work as my headlights and then bolted it all together...

Thanks guys. Hayes used their own cabs but I believe the design was basically unchanged from 1954-1975 when they stopped building trucks. They did have quite small windows like the early KW cabs that's for sure.

Thanks a lot!

This is a Hayes HD that we saw in Dawson City YT last summer. An old guy had been using the truck to haul paydirt but had since retired and the truck was up for sale. I believe he said it was a 1969. My truck is not really based off of this particular truck but they were all very similar as far as the cab is concerned.

Thanks! A small update. I have spent a while fiddling around to get things at the right height and fitting properly but haven't made many new parts yet. I did manage to add some small details though. Next will be mounting the cab to the chassis. The hood now rests on the rad and cowl as it should and will lift off for battery changes just like it does on my KW850.

Yes I tack the parts together in a few places along the seem first. You have to be very careful with the amount of heat you apply as you are welding though or it will still warp badly or melt a big hole in a hurry. This material is 0.050 thick, my other models bodies are all made from 0.063 which is easier to weld but harder to shape. Either way, fitment of the parts before welding makes a huge difference. The tighter the gaps are, the easier it is to weld.

I made a little progress with the driveline today. I didn't want to use a stock trans because it is so bulky and high geared. My attempted solution was to buy a cordless screwdriver and tear it apart. The one I bought came from Walmart and was only $10. It is a nice little planetary setup and seems to have enough power to spin all 8 tires on my bench with a few pounds of weight on them. I made up a little mount for the drive itself and bolted it into the frame. I used the 1/4" hex coupling, slotting it with a diamond wheel to allow fitment of the stock driveshaft. If it all works out I will have plenty of room for batteries and electronics under the hood...

Thanks Ed. Only time will tell if it holds up but I think it will work out fine. It is easy to swap out so for $10 I will buy another as a spare just in case. After joining the other island boys at the show in Campbell River I figured that a slow truck was way better than a fast one. Being set up on tables is just fine but a little bit of a concern when your truck doesn't like going really slow! My KH has an 85 turn motor with an 11t pinion and it is still way too fast to ever use 3rd gear. At shows we are always in a confined area so there isn't much need for a big, bulky 3 speed. This drive should have an output speed at the axles of around 120rpm at 7.2v. It looks to be just a little slower than my KH in first gear.

Wow Reg this truck is incredible! Do you use filler rod all the time on the thin stuff? Years ago I played around with TIG and could fuse weld thin stuff but could never seem to do well when adding filler rod.
Thanks for the drive idea with $10 Walmart screw driver, I've had one on my bench for 2 months in the package to power a screw drive. I finally took it out of the package to see how it did at building a set of frame rails last night. Surprisingly it worked well in its original form.:lol:

Haha, I bought two screwdrivers(one has two speeds) not knowing which one would go on to serve another purpose. I ended up using the $10 one because it had a little more rpm. Now I think I will keep the more expensive, 2 speed one for installing screws....until I need it for something else that is:D

I sue filler rod quite a bit but not always. It really depends on the joint but it always seems to be stronger when I use filler rod even if it gets ground off.

If it wasn't for gluing on detail stuff, I was contemplating polishing the cab... I really liked my 850 in it's raw state too but once it was painted it looked like the real deal to me...I even thought I could smell bark chips from the log sort once while looking at it(losing my mind, I know). The Hayes will get some paint. I just haven't decided which logging company colors and logo will be on it. Kind of a shame in a way though because I am proud of my skills with aluminum and most people assume that it is just plastic once painted...

I think I see how you did the two piece wheel, quite ingenius.

The center needs to be welded in yet? Did the center start out as a piece of flat bar?

The stock tires, do you have a vertical bandsaw? Cross cut the face of the tire using the hashmarks on the sidewalls for spacing... that improves their traction immensely. ;)

The stock tires, do you have a vertical bandsaw? Cross cut the face of the tire using the hashmarks on the sidewalls for spacing... that improves their traction immensely. ;)

I started out with a piece of pipe for the rim. It was nice that the pipe was the right size for a change. For the 850 I had to use schedule 80 and turn it down. A much longer process...

I used my rotary table mounted horizontal to machine the grooves in the rims. I have never done this before as I have always used the lathe with a parting tool. Using the rotary table was WAY faster!...lesson learned!
Yes the centers started out as 1/2 flat bar that I cut into rough circles. I then put them in the lathe and center drilled them to install a bolt. Once bolted together I held the bolt in the chuck and turned them to size. Press fit...

Then back to the mill and rotary table to machine the oval holes using a ball mill.

Once that was done I pressed and glued them together. Then it was back to the lathe to machine out the backside of the assembled wheel.

After finishing that, I gave them a pretty aggressive bead blast to remove the burrs that were left behind after machining.

Last but not least I flipped up the rotary table and drilled the bolt circle.

Next process will be making the hubs for mounting the rims to the axles. Then onto the rears!

Wow, what a process...no wonder that took a few hours!

I will have to try the tire trick some day. I have ordered new ones for this project because I wanted the increase in height as well as a more off road looking tread.

I got started on the front hubs this afternoon. I still have to make the dust caps and the spare. Then I can make the centers for the rear rims. I used 2-56 bolts as studs. I wish I had more scale sized nuts to hold the wheels on but these will do unless I find something else.

Hi Reg Have you tried Micro Fasteners 2-56 nuts they have small pattern nuts HNBS0256 1/8 across the flats or standard 3/16 across the flats

Awesome! Thanks. I will check that out because I was planning to order from them again soon. It's funny how certain suppliers carry different things. I found a local place that has really good prices on the M3 screws I use ($4-5 per 100) but when I asked about stuff smaller than 4-40 with a hex head they didn't have a supplier for them. Micro Fasteners has been really nice to deal with and they have a good selection but their prices are a bit steep. The last order I made from them was around $70US for a bunch of metric stuff. I made the same order through Raider Hansen in Victoria and it was less than $30CAD. Live and learn to shop around but if someone has it but others don't and you need it, you have to buy it good deal or not!lol

Thanks again for the info!

Basic question, how do you tap for the 2-56 screws? I tried to tap threads in aluminum but broke the tap. I was going by hand, and almost wonder if using the lathe would be better.

For the small stuff I always drill the holes a little larger than the recommended size and tap by hand...carefully. For tapping 3mm holes, I use my cordless drill but don't tighten the chuck up super tight. Again using caution! I also use silicone spay or alcohol for lubricant.

I broke off my favorite 3mm tap recently in a customers box. The tap was getting dull and I was trying to thread a hole near a weld. The alum gets soft and galls easy where its been welded and I was trying to tap it dry(lube messes up powder coat). Anyway it broke off, I said a few bad words, calmed down and tried to grab the end that was sticking out. I got it to move but it broke off flush causing me to say more bad words. I tried heating the area with the TIG torch thinking it would swell the aluminum and make the hole loose. That didn't work but I noticed that the tap was melting so it gave me an idea. I TIG welded a nail to the broken tap and wound it right out! What a relief!:D

I use a specific cutting oil for tapping aluminum & chuck the tap in a cordeless drill too... depending of the thickness of the piece you're tapping, you'll likely have to back the tap out several times, clean off the filings (I use a brass bristle brush) & relube before you tap all the way through... the cordless drill makes fast work of that.

I chuck the tap gripping the smooth round, instead of the squared end, so the tap slips easily when the cutting threads get too full of chips. ;)

That's pretty trick welding Reg to fish the broken tap out!
I'm looking forward to getting my own tig welder here shortly & learning the craft. :)

Thanks for the pointers. I thought about drilling a bigger hole and will use this tip from now on.
I broke a few bits in aluminum, and I wasn't able to get them out. I tried using alum to corrode the bits, and I think this may work with more time.

Nothing really went as planned for me today but I did get started on the rear wheels and finished my spare. For the rear wheels I am attempting to stamp out the centers, do a little machining and then press them into the rim. So far I have made a couple of dies and successfully punched out one center to play with. I am not sure what I will end up doing as it is kinda trial and error at this point. I will try to mess around with this a little more over the next couple of days and nail down a setup.

This is what the first one looks like prior to drilling the bolt circle. I will put it back in the lathe to clean up the edge where the center meets the rim eventually.

Well I spent the whole day working on the wheels today. I made some modifications to my dies this morning and tried some different setups in the mill. Anyway, long story short I think I have a wheel that I am happy with for the truck. It always seems like the hard part is setting up for the job. Once you get all the tooling sorted out you have no excuse to use it anymore! Oh well...

Here's a few pictures of the parts and the assembled wheels. I ordered some 1/8 nuts as suggested so once they get here I will button it all up!

Thanks guys. The hub "studs" are 2-56 bolts.
I was torn between two color combos. Both were from former BC forestry giants that are long gone now. Both paint schemes are close to the pattern on my 850KW but one is orange, white and green(BC Forest Products) and the other is red, white and green(MacMillan Bloedel). My wife said it needs to be red so M&B colors it is! These are the trucks that I was most fond of as a kid anyway so it suits me just fine.

I put in a 9 hour day yesterday and got a good start on the box. I think it is looking the part of an old heavy duty truck now and I think the box is turning out pretty good. Maybe I should start building and selling boxes...Oh wait a minute:rolleyes:...

Still plenty to do! More to come later.

Basic question, how do you tap for the 2-56 screws? I tried to tap threads in aluminum but broke the tap. I was going by hand, and almost wonder if using the lathe would be better.

When I tap threads I use a cutting fluid called "tap magic" It is available from USC Industrial Supply Co. I comes in a 4OZ can for $4.62. Their part # is 06492920.

You could use a lathe to tap holes but [B]TURN THE CHUCK BY HAND> DO NOT TURN THE LATHE ON[B]

It has been a long time since I broke a tap using their cutting fluid.

Thanks modelman. This truck is very similar to the Kenworth in a lot of ways. I can't believe how much easier it is to build a truck in this scale when you can just buy axles and suspension instead of making it from scratch. This truck will likely be ready for paint in the time it took for me to build the rear suspension and axles for the 1/10 KW. Hopefully the parts I am waiting for so up this week so that I can take it for a test drive.

Here's a little update from yesterday. I didn't spend much time on it but I did manage to make the tailgate and add the rungs for the ladders on each side of the box. I also cut up some pieces for the fuel tanks but I haven't done any machining on them yet.

Thanks guys.

Steve, I don't think you have much competition on the wheels coming from me! It took me about 3 days to make the wheels and hubs.... I am happy with how they turned out though, especially the rears. I'm not sure if anyone has noticed but the wheels are wider that stock on every axle too, making the stance 1cm wider. The box is also 1cm wider than normal. The tires I have ordered are taller and wider than the Tamiya ones so they should fill out the rims just right and add to the off-highway look of the truck.

I hadn't planned on lifting the gate but that might be a cool idea! I will look through your channel tonight and see if I can find the video.

If not I'll get 1 in 2 weeks at the cabin fever show . My 1st steel wheels where stamped in steel much like you did . accept I tried to weld together  I'll tell you this , making wheels in mass by hand sucks !!! I'll never go back to that again . It's ok for yourself kinda fun and a lil pride that you can do it , but gets old fast .

edit : not on you tube but in my p'bucket

Thanks for the pictures Steve.

I had a couple things come in the mail today(besides bills)! I got the front suspension that I picked up from Alfy(thanks:D) and my order from RC4WD. Once I assembled the front suspension and figured out where it needed to go, I took it back apart and made up this big mount for the front springs and torque arms. I turned the axle around and swapped the spindles left for right so that the threaded holes pointed forward. This will give me an anchor point on the axle for the torque arms. I will also add more to this assembly so that the bumper is supported by it but this was enough for today. It is beautiful here and a shame to have spent most of the day indoors but I can't help myself....

Thanks guys.

Trucker_Jo, That looks to be the same basic truck for sure! The nice thing about building a truck like this is that not one of them came out of the factory identical even if they were ordered together. I can build whatever I want within reason and it won't be wrong!lol

Greg, The plan is to go with M&B colors. The only problem is trying to get the correct color red. I wanted to get a lot of this powder coated but I don't think I will get close enough on the color. Even to find a rattle can is going to be a challenge.

I spent hours on this again today and made a bit more progress. I finished the under side of the box and wired it, mounted the air cleaner, and did a few other little things that haven't gone on yet.

The air cleaner is held on with a bolt from the backside but I made up these little straps to make it look like they hold it on.

Thanks very much Dan. I am fairly happy with how it is turning out so far. It always seems like there are a couple of things that could be better.

Thanks very much for the link! They have some cool looking hardware for sure. I did make an order from Micro Fasteners and received it the other day. I ordered some 2-56x1/8 nuts and they look pretty good I just haven't put them on yet. I think I will be making an order from lockeduprc in the near future though as I need some scale metric stuff!

A bit of an update. I shortened the frame 1/4" behind the axles to move the box forward. It now goes up and down as it should. I also did a little more body stuff and started to wire things. Hopefully there aren't any leaks when she finally gets flashed up!:D I also mounted the oil filter, finished up the battery box area and step. When I was looking at it the other day, I realized that the rear springs are nearly bottomed out already(less than 1/8" travel). I guess I will be making my own leaves for it to fix that problem.

Thank you Wolfgang!

Yes I guess I am getting adjusted to the smaller scale Mario. I think if I were to do another complete scratch build it would be in 1/10th just because I like the size and weight of them and how they don't ping off of every little bump and pebble. This has been a lot of fun and no stress compared to machining axles from blocks aluminum without CNC, welding up I beam frames and making intricate suspension parts. The truck has come together quite easy and because of yourself, Wayne and John S. donating parts I have less in this than I do invested in tires alone for the 850KW and trailers! The redo's have been pretty minimal too but the hours are adding up I'm sure! I still have a few things to do detail wise but the list is getting short.... I got to drive it around in the shop today too!:D:cool:

I can't say anything too bad about her because she sat in the car for 3/4 hour today while I was at the hobby shop and I didn't even get slapped when I came back. She had the keys and didn't drive away with out me either... Come to think of it she probably knew that if she left me there I would just buy more stuff.:cop:

I bought a brand new $50 battery and came home and cut it up. I wanted the battery under the hood but I couldn't fit a 6 cell stick in there so I cut the last two cells off and soldered them back on with some longer leads making a hump pack out of it. Once that was done I got to do this...

The drive motor is causing some grief with the dump motor. At full throttle the dump motor glitches and slowly goes up. I think I need some of those rings that you put on the esc wires....It probably doesn't help that all of the stuff is in such a confined space.

Thank you very much for the compliments.

After messing with ferrite rings and a list of other changes I discovered that the glitching issues the dump drive was having were caused by the 645 steering servo. It works flawlessly on it's own and as soon as I unplug it from the rx the dump motor stops messing around so I swapped it out for a 485. I am guessing that the problem is more to do with the Sabertooth's 1amp BEC than the servo itself. My KH runs the same ESC but different servos. It has issues when both steering and shift servos are struggling but it just stops until the esc resets.... Stupid electronics....or maybe just stupid installer...lol

I am trying to have it finished by the summertime so that we can all crash into it!

I started working on my own rear suspension this afternoon. I stole Wolfgang's idea and made up some springs out of a garden rake. After Wolfgang mentioned this I went and talked to my aunt and uncle that have a landscaping business. I now have plenty of broken rakes for spring making!...

Once the springs were done I made some new frame plates that lower the pivot point of the springs and the torque arms. I still need to make new torque arms to finish things up but it now has more travel(also ditched the shocks) and is stiff enough to carry a load without bottoming out completely but still flexes some. I may install a spacer between the pivot and leaves to lower the back of the truck 1/8" but I will see what happens when I make the new torque arms. Once I get that sorted out I will add some stops to the frame. This project has become WAY bigger than what I intended in the beginning. This hobby is not helping me become more of a relaxed, calm person. It's making me crazier than I already was!lol

So with the additional axle travel of this new spring setup, will the dog bone driveshaft between the diffs or from the trans not fall out?

I tried something similar to this a few yrs ago & the dog bone & cup between the diffs would pop out at max articulation. But RC4WD now has a slider driveshaft that fits perfectly between these diffs, though I don't know if it has enough telescope not to come apart.

It doesn't seem to but it might. While putting together the second side the shaft fell out and I didn't notice until I had bolted everything back up. I couldn't get it to go back in without taking the torque arms off. I think changing the position of the trunnion and the torque arms has improved the geometry(by accident). The stock springs also increase the axle spacing as they are compressed but these are already flat so they don't change much. When I made the springs, I closed up the eyes on them so that they are tight on the bolts. Now there is very little slop in the suspension which may also help. Fingers crossed that it works. I will be putting some stops on the frame anyway as mentioned and that will limit the travel. I guess I won't know until I drive it more but I drove it over some blocks of wood and it stayed in while empty.

Great improvement on that rear suspension, Reg. Who needs shocks anyway? You could always machine a walking beam out of solid aluminum too, if you really wanted some serious load capacity.

I made some changes to it a couple of days ago. I raised the pivot point of the springs to lower the rear and made new mounts on the axles for the torque arms. This also reduced the travel but it still has a bit more than stock and definitely carries more weight. I made a set of walking beams a while back but they will be used in something else. I am thinking of making new frame rails for this as there are so many unused holes that it looks like Swiss cheese. I made a test piece last night and I was able to bend it without issues so that may be next on my list for this truck. There isn't much left that I plan to do now though. Air tanks, a new rear bumper, mount the mudflaps and spare. Then it's ready for the part I hate!

Wow, That truck is fantastic. I am truly in awe of your metal working abilities. I know you have have heard this before on previous builds, but the truck looks so good as it is. If painting is such an awful chore for you, dont paint it. I am a horrible painter, but nothing I have ever built looked that good to start with. For me, paint helps hide some of the screwups. In your case it hides the craftsmanship.

Nice color choice!
I met a Hayes in similar colors (maybe identical, my memory is foggy) between Port Alberni and Bamfield in 1998. It scared me a bit, we don't have that size of trucks out here on the East Coast. :)

Seems to work just as good as it looks, which is great.

Yes, that's exactly what I was going for with the color!:D I spent quite a bit of time in that area camping with my parents back in the 80's and early 90's. MacMillan Bloedel had a large camp there (Franklin River Division) and that is how I plan to have the decals made for this truck. The camp is long gone and so is M&B so this is my little tribute.

What's next for me? I am not sure! I have some customer projects that need my attention and the summer months are typically busy with work outside the hobby so there probably won't be anything big going on until the fall at least. I want to scratch build a dozer and have been collecting photos and specs for months so if I can find the time I would like to do that. It will be in 1/10th scale.

Thanks for all the compliments on this truck!

Thanks very much! My plan is to build a D8H or K so it will be hydraulic or at least look that way;). I think the high-track Cat's are cool but I have always had a fancy for older equipment so I think an old late 60's early 70's D8 with a logging arch and winch is the direction I will go. Thanks. I wouldn't call it a scratch build but i guess it is close. Either way i am proud of how it turned out. One thing is for sure, there isn't another one like it!

I didn't spend much time in the shop today as it was my wife's day off and i wanted to putter around outside with her instead of being cooped up inside. While she was busy working on something I did manage to make these horns up.:cop:

I guess they don't really look 100% correct but by the time I mount them along with the clearance lights it should look pretty good. I machined a slight angle into the bottom of them so they will sit horizontal on the sloped roof once mounted.

Thanks Nate. I was trying my best to keep things looking as authentic as possible while running stock Tamiya drivetrain. The real 4640 diffs look a lot different than any available RC stuff so there wasn't much I could do there short of making my own. The steering should be different as well but to keep it simple I left things fairly stock up front too. I knew if I started to make all of this stuff from scratch the truck wouldn't be done in time for the July truck show. The window gaskets are just wiper blades like on the other trucks. I searched through the used wipers i have hoarded and found some that were a little narrower than what I used on the KW. They are a bit too wide but will do the job good enough!

A small update for the Hayes. I got a hold of some lights from Wayne last night so I couldn't resist installing them today! Of course this snowballed into more work as it always does....

I made up a steering wheel out of a ring of pipe. I put it in the chuck on my rotary table and milled it round then made up the center. Once it was glued together i decided to polish it. This is more of an inside joke with a long time friend of mine than anything else but i think it looks cool even if it isn't realistic. Next time i pop the cab off i will finish the interior...

Nice finishing touches, Reg. Was it standard practice to mount the spare tire to the cab protector? Seems like it would be a pain in the butt to get down from there, unless you just dumped the box. :D By the way, what tires are those?

RCP57
05-17-2014, 09:42 PM
Thanks Nate. I guess it is pretty important to have a spare when you are driving on ruff, rock and gravel roads out in the middle of no where. There isn't really anywhere else to put it that isn't in the way of something else. I agree that it would be a major pain in butt to access the tire when it's 8 or 10 feet off the ground. I guess the worst part would be getting it back up there! Inconvenient or not, that's where most of them were stored.

The tires are from China but I bought them through RC4WD. Lot's of other internet places sell them too though. They fit the bill OK for this although I wish they didn't have the metric measurements on the side.

To take it down just flip it of or into the box and out the gate . To put it back , ( 1 reason me back is not all that great anymore :( ) lift body up with gate open chain tire to gate as tight as possible lower body and manhandle the beach in and flip up on head board . Now for coal buckets forgedaboutit call the tire man :p

What's with the planking in the body ? Rock dampening ?

Hey Reg, I did that with my first 10 wheeler for hauling concrete, salvaged all the lumber from wasteful builder's! Had to take it out first time I hauled

These boxes are pretty strong Nate. If they get a dent just from loading material then the rest of the truck is in big trouble! The wood is mostly for show but it does make less noise when you drop in the first few scoops.

Yep it's definitely your fault Mario...:p I told my wife it was a test to see if it was good enough for the other Hayes I'm building. Her response was "Well why is it going in this one then? Shouldn't you just test it and then set it aside until the other truck is done?" Of course she said all of this with a smile on her face because she knows I have issues and can't help it.lol I will be ordering another one shortly!....for the other Hayes of course...
I think the sound is great too. I used two of the small speakers I bought and wired them ++ --. This brought the ohms down to just over 6 for the pair. Individually they were around 10ohms even though they are rated at 8. The KW sound unit thingy doesn't work as nicely as the electronic stuff but I can't get over how well it actually worked out for what it is. My main concern now with it is the possibility of wearing it out. Those mechanical parts rubbing on each other won't last forever and if I buy a new twist grip it may not sound the same! That one nailed the 12V71, the next one might sound like a Harley!

Thanks very much guys! After playing with the conveyor for a few hours I decided to move some dirt with the Hayes. The difference in scale between the EC300D and the truck makes for some careful operation while loading. The truck box is about 6 3/4"-7" inside and the bucket on the excavator is 6". Not much room for error and I'm not the best operator!lol

So I had a bunch of mechanical problems yesterday. The loader lost it's bucket curl actuator and the Hayes had some driveline issues. The wire broke off on the actuator on the loader at the circuit board. This is the second time I have had this problem with it. Re-soldering it back on is no treat but with some care it can be done. I got it back up and running within a few minutes this morning. The Hayes started to have trans issues and the hot glue failed in the rear diff. The diff was an easy fix as I just took it apart and replaced the glue with more of the same. When I did it the first time I was running out of glue and didn't have enough to fully cover the gear teeth. This time it should stand up just fine! I also decided to lock the front drivers too although after doing a test drive I may open it up again. Traction is improved a bit but when fully loaded on loose soil it doesn't steer very well anymore. I'm not really surprised and to be honest that's why I didn't do it in the first place. The trans was an easy fix as well but required removing the battery, cab, floor, fender brace and then of course the transmission itself. I used a cordless screwdriver for power and it has been working very well up until yesterday. It has a clutch inside it much like a better quality cordless drill. I think in this case it is more intended to provide protection for the gears than adjust the torque output but at any rate it started to slip so I needed to fix it. I have a couple of spares so I took a look at one of them prior to taking the truck apart. A quick look at the new one confirmed my theory of what was wrong so I started tearing into the truck. In the pictures you will see that the sun gear is steel along with the other pieces of the clutch type thingy. The problem is that the outer case is plastic and the steel dowels that keep the assembly from slipping sit in that outer case. As the plastic stretches from repeated abuse the dowels sink and that allows it to slip easier than it should. My solution was to remove the dowels all together and weld the sun gear to the slipper parts. It seems to work and there is no way for it to slip now unless it tears the gears up!:cop:

Once it was all back together I had to do a quick test...

Well I had another transmission issue a while back but have been too busy to fix it. I dropped some stuff off at the powder coater this morning so while I wait to get that back I decided to take the afternoon off so to speak and work on my own stuff for a couple of hours. The planetary drive started to make noise occasionally a while back but kept going. A month or so ago I was using the Hayes to bench test something and I was running it with the rear wheels off the ground when the noise got louder and louder and eventually all stopped except the buzz of the motor. The way I built this truck was not all that smart because I have to take the cab off to remove the trans. It comes out the bottom but bolts in through the top. Not a huge job but my big KW and Euclid trans come out the bottom and I built them first. Sure enough they are easy to remove but have never needed to come out. Sometimes we think we learn more and get smarter but...lol Anyway, enough chatter. Here is what I found and a video showing the issues and fix. I hope...

I hope...

Reg, have you tried one of the gear motors from your dump trailer lifts as a drive motor in a truck?

No I haven't. They are too expensive for me!lol I can only get one ratio in Canada(cost about $57CAD) and seems to work great for the trailers but it would be way too slow for the trucks. Those motors are 12v too which would make matters even worse since the truck is 7.2v. I tried ordering motors direct from Servo City last year so that I could get different ratios but shipping on the $40US motor was $40US! I believe Mario had ordered from them right around the same time and got dinged an additional fee for duty as well as the over inflated shipping cost(wasn't happy). I am sure they would work fine as they seem to be very strong but these things I'm using seem OK for the cost. If I can get 1 1/2 years out of a $10CAD setup I'm happy.lol I have a hoard of 12-18v drills here now and they are begging to go into another 1/10 scale project. It's almost time to start building in the "manly" scale again instead of these dinky toys.lol
