Scania 112
Hi
After getting my robot pooping machine up and running, broken it, fixed it, up and running again and dialed in, it's been pooping almost nonstop. There has been many failed prints so far and I'm still learning. How this will end up I'm unsure, might need to design and print again from scratch. But this is where I'm at, my first project in years, first in 1/14 scale and first building anything as complex like this. Although I'm designing few projects this is the one I'm farthest along with. Scania T112H Why? After I got my truck License that was the truck I start working on and drove for about year and a half, a piece of **** but had so much character and thought me so much. As for drive line I haven't decided anything yet but I'll probably end up ordering a simple kit of hercules hobbies or something similar. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...c695b5e0_c.jpg There are a few reasons I don't expect this to be a quick build, time being one but money being the bigger one. If I'm lucky I'll some sort of a chassis next year but until then I'm just using what I can get my hands on... |
Re: Scania 112
Well, I did managed to get my robot to poop a little bit more plastic and this is where I'm at.
Over 30 hours of printing just for the hood, original has a flip forward hood and I'm replicating that with brass hinges and magnets to keep in place. A little design error regarding the magnets; not enough material above the magnets so it didn't print, I'll guess it will be just filler and paint over it... The roof is still just a test piece needs to be modified a little bit, work in progress. The driver is just a forklift driver I found on Thingiverse, don't know yet if I'll use it. Can't do much more until I order more plastic (which takes at least 2 weeks to arrive) and more parts show up. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...b2528250_c.jpg |
Re: Scania 112
This looks like it'll be an interesting one to watch come together.
Your pooping robot seems to do good work |
Re: Scania 112
I like seeing folks building something different... look forward to seeing this one come together.
|
Re: Scania 112
Thanks guys, even though it's starting to come together I'm always worried if I was a bit too ambitious since I've never attempted anything like this, but We'll see.
I don't want to design/print too much until I have the parts in my hand, need to have the "feel" for them. |
Re: Scania 112
Not much has happened here the last few months, life keeps getting in the way.
I wasn't quite sure about the strength of the cab, afraid it was too thin, so I did a little stress test. The test involved giving it to my son(3) And this was the result after just 3 minutes. As I was expecting, too many week points. Also, mostly just too thin (0.5mm in some places) Have been redesigning a lot but not been able to print anything yet |
Re: Scania 112
3D printing is a challenge to master! I've been at it on/off for a few years now, & I still struggle with it.
|
Re: Scania 112
Challenging, yes. But rewarding.
I've only had my printer for a year and so far only run 4 rolls though it. My biggest problem on anything hobby related is availability, there is no one locally selling (unless it's really popular) so I need to order everything overseas with sky high shipping and customs tax... Also, I can't print good quality until I do something with the aluminum bed, it's warped. :( Thinking back, the biggest fail I did was designing too much before I got the printer. "I can design this now and then I'll just send to the printer when it arrives, it's easy" Man, was I wrong... But did learn a lot from that mistake. |
Re: Scania 112
After months of not being able to produce any thing (family & finances) I did score a little bit of plastic.
Enough to print most of the parts I had to redesign. This is the only plastic available here (polariod), quite expensive, about 50USD. So ordering from Denmark is still the best option. The joy of living in the middle of nowhere... |
Re: Scania 112
Progress has been really slow and when I thought about posting an update the site crashed.
Thankfully it's back. Sorry for the pictures are a bit blurry, dropped my phone the other day and cracked the glass https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...bc50fe71_b.jpg I redesigned and reprinted most of the cab, and also tried to make an axle. Found some metal in the house and turned into the frame with temporary crossmember, the suspension is still a "work in progress" https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...793ef111_b.jpg And because there aren't just big trucks on the road I have been working on a little side project. Design error and failed print makes the roof look "silly" https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...ac9fa566_b.jpg |
Re: Scania 112
Those new scania parts are looking good! Hopefully there's less sanding.
Trying to 3d print the waterbug is really hardcore! I totally would have wimped out and gone to look at Rastar or some of the other toys that were released when the car was. |
Re: Scania 112
Finding a toy and convert would be a lot easier, yes. But I'm obsessed with keeping things within the same scale. Also the main purpose of this, it's supposed to end up as a birthday/christmas present.
There will always be a bit sanding but seems like minimal, even less now after I changed to a 0,2mm nozzle. |
Re: Scania 112
Slow but some Progress.
Been trying out something new. Ordered a few pull-start recoil springs to see if I could make a set of leaf springs. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...16b337c0_b.jpg Looks good for first attempt I think but might be a bit too long. We'll see. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...58413b74_b.jpg I also redesigned the grill, the old one was ok, but this one looks better. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...6c38458b_b.jpg Just a kitchen strainer cut to size, a black sharpie and a small frame to hold it in place. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...ef4a6333_b.jpg The first version of the dumper bed. Printed in sections so it's easy to shorten/lengthen it if needed, hold together with 6x m4 rods. It's a little crooked due to crappy printer bed but it kinda looks old, tired and used. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...64bf5c45_b.jpg |
Re: Scania 112
It’s looking great!
|
Re: Scania 112
I like the look... Glad to see this coming together...
|
Re: Scania 112
Really very nice. What size starter spring are you using to make your leaf springs?
|
Re: Scania 112
Thanks guys.
The springs are just generic 5mm ones, bought 10x off Aliexpress. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...d53fa5a5_b.jpg I don't if I need to revisit the dumper mechanism. Was hoping to get to 50-55 degrees but I'm not sure if will even reach 45 https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...07e0f9d2_b.jpg We'll see when I get more parts to do some testing. I really need more parts, a lot more parts, haven't even bought tires yet... |
Re: Scania 112
Well.
The progress for the last few months has been slow with the build, but still some. Did managed to draw and print fenders for the rear and a simple bumper. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...5dab4d90_b.jpg Last week some tires arrived and of course I had to try them out. Fit the wheel well but way too wide to use on the rear axle. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...71742a79_b.jpg And with so many small parts everywhere and always ending on the floor I ended up on making a better storage system. So much more space on the worktable now, and easily expandable, which will happen. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...14d040a2_b.jpg I did make an error regarding the rear axle/boogie system where the inner tires would not fit anymore. So now I'm at a standstill, do I redesign it all over again or do I upgrade it to a 6x4 model? Even though that means ordering more parts I'm leaning more towards 6x4 since it be more capable offroad... |
Re: Scania 112
Looks good!
Kerst |
Re: Scania 112
Really starting to come together...
I agree with you order a couple more parts, maybe reprint something, before I would redesign the whole chassis.... |
Re: Scania 112
I came to the conclusion rather quickly that 6x4 would be a simpler solution, or at least forget the lift axle (for now, might revisit it later).
Getting rather excited to see it drive so the printer has been running almost nonstop for the last 48hrs and this is what I came up with https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9c4c65e4_b.jpg Don't know if there is a name for this kind of setup, walking leaf suspension thingy. Haven't given up on making leaf springs but while still in testing phase it's easier to just print a pair. Also put a little paint on a couple of parts, will need a few more coats and wet sanding to get rid of all the lines and imperfections. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...5cfcd64f_b.jpg The colour isn't exactly what I wanted but still pretty close. It's a standard rattle can colour and only 5min away so I'm rolling with it... |
Re: Scania 112
Well, I took the plunge.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...f6f1050b_b.jpg Since I wasn't happy with the progress of scratch building everything as my first build I ended up with buying a kit, Tamiya Grand hauler. Not that terrible expensive and the length suits my needs. I also ended up on drawing up the frame and crossmembers in Fusion360 https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game...d-hauler-frame <- Link if anyone wants to check out. Just to make everything easier in the long run since I want to put my own dup bed and cab and don't want multiple holed all over the chassis. |
Re: Scania 112
Nice, looks like that really speeds up build time!
I think there were some places that sell blank frames and printed drill-jigs, once you get all they layout finalized |
Re: Scania 112
Building the frame took almost no time at all, when the body came things started to slow down a bit.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...97c07406_b.jpg Since I'm not running the original body I didn't see a point in going forward, might put it on another vehicle in the future... https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...529d7c0c_b.jpg Now for the biggest (so far) deviation, the original truck has a flat floor but with the gearbox in place that's impossible. But the good news is that so far I haven't had to drill any holes to the frame, I've been able to utilize the ones that were. The stock Tamiya wheels vs my own design https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...3f444a5e_b.jpg Not by any means perfect but it fits my vision. The "Wire brush and a rattle can" look. Wish I had a resin printer to get a better finish... |
Re: Scania 112
The last few days have been quite exiting. (And also a bit disappointing)
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...6236ef43_b.jpg A lot of testing, breaking stuff, redesigning and I've managed to get myself a working model that can be used in in light yard work. https://youtu.be/Fu9e5rlYO_s This is still far away from being complete. The body sits too low, need limit switches, the dumper lift mechanism needs rethinking, (hydraulic?) electronic overhauling, gear reduction, and a whole lot of cosmetic details. But before I can do any of that I need to fix my 3Dprinter, managed to fry the mainboard. :( |
Re: Scania 112
Fried printer huh??? I'm not gonna ask if it tastes just like chicken.
You're not alone though.... A couple of years ago I managed to static zap the input board on my Monoprice clone of a Wanhao D6. Now I never touch any of the electronics on that machine without first touching the metal frame - since it's grounded. |

But hey, always look at the bright side of things, this is a good excuse for a upgrade  Just not yet. |
