1974 oshkosh cab over

Hello everyone
Here are some pics of the start of my new build i am building an oshkosh tipper it is a truck that my dad used to own in the 70's he tells me it was the last one to come to australia it had a 450hp cat and he says it could go allmost anywhere.
I have a couple of photos to work from but thats about it so if anyone has some photos or info it would be apreciated this is my second truck and very much my first cabin from scatch so any advice would also be apreciated.
This cabin is made from cardboard i am just trying to get it to look right then i will start with the styrene

Hey CAT, this will be interesting, I have never even heard of this truck before. I would like to build a cab from scratch someday myself, so I will watch this with great interest. Nice to see how you scaled it out in 2D on card first using a tyre for scale reference.

Best of luck, hope you find the info / references you need and have success with the build.

Re: 1974 oshkosh cab over

BTW, I assume you have already trawled through Google images, I tried it there and it seems these guys do a whole lot of very serious, hardcore military and armored trucks, some of which would make an awesome looking 8x4 or 8x8 build.

Looks like a killer start man! Wish I could help you out with specs on the real deal, but this is the first I have ever seen. Are you building the animal guard and doing the paint just like the pic?

Re: 1974 oshkosh cab over

yeah cheers tracy
I am pretty pumped about it just trying to work out all the little problems at the moment i am using a globe liner chassis which i may need to shorten a little.
I am also trying to work out where i am going to fit battery ect i have ordered the hydraulic ram it should be on its way.
the one thing i would love to get hold of is some rims with the spiders like the ones in the photo.
Cheers again

CAT29 11-18-2011 02:35 AM

Re: 1974 oshkosh cab over

Yes that is getting close those rims look good where did those ones come from? thanks sandcraft.
Cheers again Richie

Re: 1974 oshkosh cab over

I have made a bit of a start on the chassis i am moving the front axel back 12mm i have sat my cardboard cab on so can get a bit of an idea of how it's going to look. i kind of think the chassis is a little long but it scales spot on i think it just needs about 20mm cut off the back that way the tipper body will finish where the chassis finishes now.
Anyway here are a couple of pics

any progress?? this is such a cool project.

CAT29 11-23-2011 03:44 AM

Re: 1974 oshkosh cab over

progress yes pictures no alot of the progress is planing at the moment i have started the cabin in styrene but may change to steel i am not sure how to fit the 3 speed box in as sticks a long way out of the back of the cabin and will clash with the hydraulic ram for the tipper i am thinking about making it a single speed just trying to find a suitable transmission as i want alot of grunt i will post some more pics as soon as possible
cheers richie

Re: 1974 oshkosh cab over

Looks good. It looks so good those darn phillips screws are killing it,how about adding a section of angle styrene to the inside of the cab so you can bolt the floor to it instead of going through the outside of the cab??just a thought, not knocking you build just trying to help a bit..

Well were waiting on the new pics LOL! I want to see what you came up with for the screw delete. Its things like hiding screws that makes all the difference when this is all finished.

Good work! Now this is going to be a dump bed correct? If so are you going to make it from styrene or metal? and what style lift system?

CAT29 01-04-2012 05:28 AM

Re: 1974 oshkosh cab over

Hello
Well it's been a while.
Not much has been happening over Xmas. The tipper (dump bed) will be made of sheet metal and it's going to be a hydraulic lift I just received the ram in the mail yesterday.

crawler07 01-04-2012 08:16 AM

Re: 1974 oshkosh cab over

Sounds great!Cant wait to see it all mounted up I want to go hydro on my dodge but I was worried about the price. Do you mind me asking where you got it from and how much it was?

The detail is great. All the lines are smooth and feathered in.

CAT29 01-10-2012 05:19 PM

Re: 1974 oshkosh cab over

yeah thanks the grill is good but the blank area for the headlights should be three slots high not two i did'nt realise till i took that photo with the picture beside it.

crawler07 01-10-2012 09:25 PM

Re: 1974 oshkosh cab over

couldnt you just cut on up to the next set of slats and then install your headlights? Where do you guys get all this laser cutting done? is it a local place or do you guys send it out? Als do you do the drawing on a file and send it to the cutter or do they draw it on the program for you??

CAT29 01-11-2012 05:36 AM

Re: 1974 oshkosh cab over

The laser cutting is done local. i draw it on paper then i give it to Andi my girlfriend and then she draws it on auto cad and i just email it to them

crawler07 01-11-2012 01:53 PM

Re: 1974 oshkosh cab over

Im going to give that a try when I get home tonight and its ging to sound something like this lol.

me:Hey Marie I was wondering if I draw up a couple of crossmembers do you think you could draw them up on auto cad for me??

Her reply: What the **** are you talking about???

I think its cool your girlfriend can help you out in the hobby!!

SWAGGER 01-12-2012 02:40 PM

Re: 1974 oshkosh cab over

Coming along nice. I think the grill turned out great, they did a nice job. Your drawing must have been accurate as it's a perfect fit. I can see your point though, for all the effort of scratch building that cab to be true to scale, you don't want to let things like that slip through the net. That being the case, if you are getting them to redo it for the lights, get them to also cut out that notch along the bottom edge, so it is 100% like the picture.

Keep up the great work!

CAT29 01-14-2012 06:29 AM

Re: 1974 oshkosh cab over

Yes well it is handy when your girlfriend is a civil engineer it can also be a pain in the butt and yes i agree i will get them to cut that notch along the bottom cheers thanks for the input guys its been hard to get motivated lately i wish the hydraulic ram for the tipper was 20mm shorter it doing my head in!
I guess it would be no fun if every thing was easy!
