Moxy articulated dump truck
 

I've been doing some research on these trucks. If anybody has any suggestions or tips on do's and don'ts for a build I'd be glad to hear them.
I've found suppliers of tires, drive motors, and electronics online. The hydraulics are another story. I might go with a worm drive and a scissor lift to dump the box.
This will be my first attempt at a scale scratch build so bear with me if I ask lots of lame questions.

What scale are you going to build, how tall are your tires going to be?

I'm aimimg for 1/14 scale.
The tires should be around 5" tall.

These tires from RC4WD look pretty close at 5 1/2"

I wonder how hard that sidewall is on that tire Steve, do you know? It's a good looking tire and not a bad price for two.

I like those tires even better and as for side wall 2 inserts could be put in side by side.

Jr, you'll probably see it long before it hits the dirt. I'm going to need lots of parts from the R/C shop and I'll need help tracking down specialty items. I'll be in on Tuesday to order the tires for starters.

I wonder if the Castle Mamba Monster ESC will power 6 gear motors running a 6S lipo?

There's this dual esc, commonly used for tracked models, but also work well to turn the "mix" off and use the two motor controllers seperately. I use the 2x10 to power my six drive motor adt and the other controller to power up the hyd pump... whereas you would use the 2nd esc for your screwdrive dump mechanism.

I haven't looked at this site since last winter, they now have a 2x12 dual controller, but the BEC still sucks with only 1amp supply to the rx. I've been adding the rx batt to my models for extra current draw on the rx for many servos and you're likely going to use a 1/4 scale servo or something similar to steer your adt, so this will be a necessity for more rx power.

Thanks for the great info guys.
I wish all these online stores were available 30 years ago when my dad started building. It sure would have saved alot of grief in tracking down suitable parts.
Now if only I can convince my work to buy a CNC mill;)

Jordy, I have the Mil-Spec tires on order as well, they are very close in size and width to the ones I have on my ADT now.

I was looking at the 58 rpm ( Lou sent me a link) motors for more speed but I'm not sure I need it. The tires will be ordered tommorow, and I'll make some decisions about the motors soon.
I was also thinking of a 17 rpm 277 ounce motor to use on the screw drive for the dump box.
I guess I'll have my lunch hours at work filled for the next while making parts and pieces. I have 2 chucks for small parts I can put in and take out of the shop lathes in a hurry without disturbing the work piece.
I also think we just got in 20' of 2 1/2" round aluminum for stock. It's 6061L and is fairly free machining so I'll start knocking out some rims with planetary covers.

I just got a set couple weeks ago to look at for another project . just a hair smaller then the tamiya mammoth tires . I like them a lot :D . Yes sometimes a cnc would be nice like when your making a hundred + of the same thing :eek: can't wait to see this 1 started .

We've been toying with the CNC thing for some time. Last year I got to run a HAAS TM2 at a demo and with the programming and tool setups we were looking at runs of 5 to 10 parts being cost effective. Not to mention the fact that they walked me through programming tool selection and run through of a fairly complex part in 45 minutes without any prior experience (read: I had no idea how to do it). I'd buy one myself but I might wind up divorced if i add any more stuff to my shop.

Hi Jordy. Just a small piece of advice. Don't waste your money with the slow rpm motor. The motor you saw in mine at Greg's was same 34 rpm as the link he posted. When you think about using 10/32 all thread that's only 1" per minute,and it's way to slow. I upped it to 253 rpm 153 oz,in, same supplier and it will still lift over 30 lb, no problem. And it does it in about 20 seconds, much better. Just finished installing a micro switch on it for the down stop and it's running well. Been thinking about making a bronze nut for it as am not sure how long the furniture nut will last, as it's steel on steel. I covered the screw with heavy duty anti seize, but now it will probably pick up dust. On the plus side it sure runs smoother. :D Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info on the screw drive motor. I hadn't taken the time to do the math. I'm going to start in on the design work tommorow after I've shovelled all the snow.

Thanks for the link thats a nice setup for the steering.How do you have it hooked to the articulation joint? I took a quick look at it when we were visiting but am not sure of the connection.

I think I've figured out a simple system for mechanical cylinders for the box dump mechanism. It will do away with the scissor lift but I'm not sure how it will look on the truck until I make a prototype. Boy I wish I could get all my parts and pieces faxed to me instead of having to wait for shipping:D
