Ive read about people using vegetable oil for fluid. Is that something that people actually do?

There are so called 'biodegradable hydraulic fluids' based on vegetable oils out there these days, that are less damaging to the environment than standard oils.
(must not be mistaken for cooking oil, olive oil, which you do not want to put on a hydraulic machine )As long as the oil is marked 'hydraulic fluid, grade xx' then one are okay.
