I also think ground radio have stick self centering (4 springs) while air have only 3 axis centering (3 springs) plus one axis with a drag plate for the throttle.

Looks like and absolute nightmare to operate... But also seem not to block access to the fifth wheel... so maybe not so bad compared to either drag your slave forklift or unload by hand...

being a synchromesh gearbox the bearings are not on the elements supposed to slide. so I don't see how steel on steel wearing of the shaft could make a problem...

So honestly... i'd battle against...

The links are held with 3 mm diameter keyholder style loop rings (sort of spring steel).
Chains are hardware store chromed chains (restrain for furniture doors/ drawers). Maybe S.M. undergarment...
