good job Reg . looks like I got some competition with wheels now you going to make the gate lift up ? if you need idea on how I'll show you . Heres my 1st truck ( before cnc or anything accept clapped out 1911 lathe and a dremel , aluminum welding capabilities ) I think I have a vid of the gate lifting on my you tube channel .

Thanks guys.

Steve, I don't think you have much competition on the wheels coming from me! It took me about 3 days to make the wheels and hubs.... I am happy with how they turned out though, especially the rears. I'm not sure if anyone has noticed but the wheels are wider that stock on every axle too, making the stance 1cm wider. The box is also 1cm wider than normal. The tires I have ordered are taller and wider than the Tamiya ones so they should fill out the rims just right and add to the off-highway look of the truck.

I hadn't planned on lifting the gate but that might be a cool idea! I will look through your channel tonight and see if I can find the video.

Reg

If not I'll get 1 in 2 weeks at the cabin fever show . My 1st steel wheels where stamped in steel much like you did . accept I tried to weld together I'll tell you this , making wheels in mass by hand sucks !!! I'll never go back to that again . It's ok for yourself kinda fun and a lil pride that you can do it , but gets old fast .

edit : not on you tube but in my p'bucket

a pic at the gate

Thanks for the pictures Steve.

I had a couple things come in the mail today(besides bills)! I got the front suspension that I picked up from Alfy(thanks) and my order from RC4WD. Once I assembled the front suspension and figured out where it needed to go, I took it back apart and made up this big mount for the front springs and torque arms. I turned the axle around and swapped the spindles left for right so that the threaded holes pointed forward. This will give me an anchor point on the axle for the torque arms. I will also add more to this assembly so that the bumper is supported by it but this was enough for today. It is beautiful here and a shame to have spent most of the day indoors but I can't help myself....

Now that the front suspension is in I can almost see it driving around. Just need to mount the steering servo and buy a receiver....

A little more detail and a few more small bolts...

An update video...http://youtu.be/Hpjba5Bt1OE

I made up the fuel tanks yesterday but made the mounts today...

I got started on the exhaust today as well. The heat shield is held on with 0-80 bolts...

Amazing build as usual Reg, you have mad skills (and lots of free time lol)
There is a guy on face book that shares amazing photos of NW logging photos and this truck is one of his personal rides.

Cant wait to see it next to the kenworth.

Trucker_Jo, That looks to be the same basic truck for sure! The nice thing about building a truck like this is that not one of them came out of the factory identical even if they were ordered together. I can build whatever I want within reason and it won't be wrong!lol

Greg, The plan is to go with M&B colors. The only problem is trying to get the correct color red. I wanted to get a lot of this powder coated but I don't think I will get close enough on the color. Even to find a rattle can is going to be a challenge.

I spent hours on this again today and made a bit more progress. I finished the under side of the box and wired it, mounted the air cleaner, and did a few other little things that haven't gone on yet.

The air cleaner is held on with a bolt from the backside but I made up these little straps to make it look like they hold it on.

Wow, I'm pretty much speechless. This is just phenomenal, the wheels and body work is great and the overall look is just spot on I can't wait to see the next round of updates.

I saw you mentioned you were looking for more scale looking hardware for the wheels, have you ever checked out lockedup rc, he's got a few different sized scale nuts, acorn nuts and scale bolts, ranging in size from 1/64, 2/56, to m3 etc etc here's a link for you.

Maybe something there will work for you

The Hayes is looking incredible. What's not to love? This thing is awesome. Scratchbuild a lot of a goodies for a unique truck on a smaller scale. Wow! And the best part is it's practically finished!

Thanks very much Dan. I am fairly happy with how it is turning out so far. It always seems like there are a couple of things that could be better.

Thanks very much for the link! They have some cool looking hardware for sure. I did make an order from Micro Fasteners and received it the other day. I ordered some 2-56x1/8 nuts and they look pretty good I just haven't put them on yet. I think I will be making an order from lockeduprc in the near future though as I need some scale metric stuff!

Thanks Nate, I have been working on this 6-9 hours every day this week. I never seem to accomplish enough in one day but it is nearing completion.

Thanks Lucas! I am really enjoying this build an like my KW, it will be a little tribute to local Vancouver Island logging history when finished. I just hope I can get the paint work done without too many headaches! I'm nearing the end of the part I enjoy...

A bit of an update. I shortened the frame 1/4" behind the axles to move the box forward. It now goes up and down as it should. I also did a little more body stuff and started to wire things. What I am most proud of from today though is that I was able to bend up the floor pan, toe pan, firewall and dashboard out of one piece of aluminum in one go!

Thanks for looking!
