I am wanting to build a scraper and was needing some ideas for motor and gearboxes. I've done some googling and all I've found is the tamiya dual motor gearbox drive unit. Looks cool but don't think it would last. Any ideas would be appreciated and some links. Thanks

yea the educational tamiya stuff is ok, but not real durable if your looking to move some heavy material. Could look at some gear head units or depending on the size of the machine these gearboxes we use in 1/16 r/c tanks are real nice. Sabertooth ESC's work well and have different models.

I used their plastic right angle gearboxes in my Bruder tracked skid steer, and they worked great, decent power, and lots of options for RPM. The also sell motor mounts made for specific motors which is nice. |

What scale are you planning to build? I would buy some round gear motors(powerful!) and install one on each wheel. Each pair held together with a tube to create and axle housing. Depending on the size of wheel I would suggest using something in the 100rpm or less range. Probably around 50-60rpm would be plenty fast if your tires are 4-5" tall.

Putting gear-motors in a tube for axle is 'number 1' when it comes to dependability for wheel loaders, articulated dumpers and so on, in my opinion. To get enough power for like 5'' wheels one should go for 540 motor size, that will say the pipe should be like 40-42 mm outside, a standard tube called 1-1/4'' I believe (need to be machined to size internaly). There are different kinds of gearmotors with a 540 size motors around, but many of them are the typical 'china ebay' stuff, too weak. If you could get hold of this type of motor as shown in the link, you don't need to worry about power...The one that have 50-60 rpm at 12V (approx 5'' wheels) They are branded 'MFA' in Europe. This company are located in England, I would think they possible ship overseas too.

I'm thinking about doing up a old tonka scraper conversion to match my other conversions. I want somthing powerful and do a moa for the rear for extra power when scraping.
