Lil Giants,
I am using a basic Planet T5 2.4 Gig radio with 5 channels, the pump is controlled from the fifth channel via a switch, the tracks are being driven via a Novak M2 Dig Dual Brush ESC that is set up to drive eack track independantly and uses the left stick forward and back for throttle and the right stick L/R for steering, i.e. the same set up as a Tamiya tank

is it possible to just use the servonaut BMA to run the pump and not bother with the SMT and M220 module

Yes, the BMA can be used alone.
Check the wiring diagram:

You can see that the connection between BMA and ESC is for communicating the sound (blue plug).
