I used pvc pipe. I think 1 1/2 inch diameter. as far as length thats up to you. I think I cut mine 5 inch long. I traced the diameter to a piece of styrene then cut it out and glued to the ends. Sanded to smooth it out some.

indeed sir it does help. without actually seeing any before, I didn't know where to start on size. Thanks for the info.

well, I managed to come up with 1 1/4 inch pvc and 2 inch pvc. not sure which to use because I don't actually have it on hand till tomorrow at work.
