I decided to start building a new grader. It's going to be Cat 14M again but this time the newer 14M3 model.

I'm using Fusion 360 to draw all the parts.

This is what I'm trying to built:

There's couple of reasons, it was very fun project at the first time (or have I just forget all the not so fun parts:)) and I think I can make some areas better.
Also there's not too many grader projects going on over here.

Ok! Hah, yeah I guess some parts are less fun then others! :)

Will be good to follow this one! :)

I got to the mill today, but it did not go quite as planned:mad:
The front frame is so long that i had to disable my limit switches on x-axis to get every millimeter in use. I of course at the other end my table hit the end and lost some steps. I did not noticed that right away but when I did, it was game over:mad:
The pocket was machined from two directions, and the left one wen't well, but on the right it lost the steps and the pockets did not quite meet:o

Do you use and glue on aluminum or weld? I’ve been finding a lot of uses for some of the adhesives industry offers. And some of the stuff is more effective than welding. Depending on the design and application. Parts are looking good!! Build is amazing!!

Hello hemi1966,
I am very impressed with your work. I am a fellow machinist and I also use fusion 360 for my CAD and CAM. I want to start a build of my own but the biggest obstacle finding scale drawings or even the 1:1 size to be able to scale down. Can you please share where you are getting your dimensions from. Also some photos of your machines and maybe some work holding. I really like the idea of building them yourself versus buying a manufactured version. Thank you in advance for the help with the drawing sources. Jeremy.

The big difficulty when making these is the lack of scale drawings:(
I first get a 1:50 scale die cast model of the object, with that you can get some measurement.
The machine brochure usually have some dimension drawings.
One place to look is also this: https://avspare.com/, there you can get some idea of the parts.

Drawing a part that is more complex often takes more time than actual machining. The following parts assembly I was drawing many, many, hours:)

Click my signature at the end of this message to get to my Youtube channel to see some machining videos.

Thank you for the reply. I hadn't thought about scaling up. I was afraid of the dimension from the smaller die-cast models being to far off. I will give it a go and start drawing some things and assembling the 3d components in fusion. Thanks again.

Dimensions of smaller details that are impossible to cast in small scale might be slightly off, but most dimensions are correct enough.

I machined the draw bar cylinder arms and the center shift arm this weekend.

The arms were quite challenging to machine especially the second operation. I had to make a pair of soft jaws to get them mounted.

So far they are holding up. I was slightly worried about the welds, but now I have taken the front axle apart several times, and it's still intact. That profile is 3x4mm so the seams are quite small.

Superb workmanship and really inspirational project. I have question on your homemade cylinders. Do you use a specific steel for the rod, ie precision ground drill rod, or regular steel? Also what type of oring? Silicone? Viton? I really want to try to make a working cylinder for a dozer.

Love the grader - masterpiece!

I've been working with the circle gear, and I got it almost machined when it came loose off the chuck. I could not tighten the chuck very tight because the circle gear is not very thick. I was taking very moderate cuts and relatively slow speed, but it was not enough
I have to try again, and do the final operation with different mounting method.
Luckily some parts turn out decently.

Bummer:mad: I know the feeling when a part comes out. I've had big parts that I'm getting paid for come out of my setups running the endmill across it making pretty tooth marks every 1/4" because I'm usually climb milling.
On your piece; Could you cast it in some of that Bismuth alloy?
If you don't know what that is, it's a soft lead type metal that melts in hot water.

Hi guys, it's been a while since last update.
I've been drawing the cab and the engine enclosure, and those parts I was thinking to 3D print. You who have used 3D printer for parts like those, how would you print them ? Do you print it wall by wall flat the build plate, or how would you do it ?

I got some machining done also. This is the rear sub frame for the ripper:)

I was trying to upload these pictures from Photobucket, but no matter what I did they showed up on the original size:mad: I give up, switching to Postimages.

How I'd print the cab would depend on the size of it. IF it was small enough I could get in on my printer in one shot, I'd try it that way first.

I made the first side wall for the engine enclosure. It's quite awkward shape as it get wider at half way and the upper front corners are bevelled, due better rear visibility.

Don't get fooled by the look of the parts, they don't come out of the printer like that. there's been a lot of sanding and puttying before painting:eek:

When I was still using build tape..................before I switched to a glass build plate, I had MAJOR issues with ABS warping. It wouldn't properly adhere to the build tape. It'd stick to the tape, but would lift the tape from the build table. Now that I have a glass build plate, those issues are gone.

It's going to be tight anyway to get everything to fit. The two 5-way valve take a lot of room.

Good question, and I'm glad that I was thinking that when I mounted the hoses to the brackets. Basically I drew a map of the bracket and marked which hose is in which hole, and I kept the same order all the way. There's 14 lines in 3 layers on the brackets, so it could be quite of a mess :)

I'm using Servonaut HS12 radio and it has 12 channels. I'm able to expand that to 16 channels. The hydraulics take 9 channels, and there's 1 spare for ripper or front plate etc.
Hard to say how many hours it take to finish, but I estimate that less than 100 h

Do have any slider chs on that radio? Put for/rev on a ch like that to set one speed & use the joysticks solely to operate blade.

How many mixes do you have on that radio?

I think on the first one I routed all the lines separately from cylinder to the valve.

No sliders on the radio, but I can emulate sliders with two buttons.

If I understand correct there is no limit for the amount of mixes.
