Here's a new project I'm going to start building. It's a 1950 Kenworth needlenose. I figured I'd mix it up a little, and work on this one, in between working on my Wedico Peterbilt, which has been slow going. This build should go a little quicker, for a handful of reasons, but it will not be without it's own set of challenges.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/KWandPetecab_zps48014ae0.jpg

To start with, it's a 1/16 scale model, which means it's quite a bit smaller then my Wedico Peterbilt, and a lot smaller then a Tamiya. I took a chance when I bought the cab. I wasn't sure just how much smaller it would be. The plan was to fit it to a Wedico chassis, but I knew it wasn't going to be a simple bolt on affair.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/KWcabWedicorears_zpscd0d837e.jpg

I borrowed the chassis of my Peterbilt, just for some mock up. Yup, it's not going to fit that easily! Both the front driven and non-driven axles are to wide for the cab. The chassis is also to wide. The cab doesn't even sit down properly, but if it did, the rear axles would fit the width of the cab pretty decent, even if they are a little wide also. Hmm, what to do.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/LiftaxlefitstheKWwidth_zps0fe7d7f6.jpg

A driven front axle is out of the question, and I don't want this build to get to complicated, so I thought I'd try the lift axle I built for my Peterbilt, under the cab. I narrowed this axle up quite some time ago, and low and behold, it fits the cab very nicely. Don't mind the super singles. They won't be staying for this build.

A little more playing around to figure out if the ride height will be acceptable, and if the tires are close to the right size. I thought at this point there was a good chance it would work all right, so I went ahead and built a mock up narrow width chassis to really get an idea for what this project might take.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Thismightwork3_zps41cc6dc1.jpg

I had some spare parts laying around, and figured I might as well use them. An Osswald front suspension I had on the bench, designed for the Wedico, ended up fitting well. I machined my own front cross member to tie a set of blank frame rails togther too. I have to say it looks promising at this point, but there is still much more to figure out. We'll see how the rest of it comes together.

Love the cab, is that solid aluminum? Looks it.

Here is a link to them.

Sharkey, yes it's a cast aluminum cab, made by All American Toys. The grille that is designed for this cab is a popular choice for guys who build the K100 trucks, out of Globe Liner kits.

Thanks guys.

I have a few more photos to share. In order to build a chassis to fit the Kenworth cab, I needed to run a narrow chassis up front, but standard width in the rear, so that all the Wedico components would fit like a stock truck. I was not going to narrow any rear axles, or build custom ones, so my solution was to make a chassis member that would allow me to transition the chassis from narrow, back to standard width. Here are the photos of the frame member -

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Frameconnector5_zpsa647d7fb.jpg

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Frameconnector4_zps7f528b26.jpg

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Frameconnector3_zps42120b0e.jpg

One solid billet frame member, to connect the frame rails. I am sure it will be plenty strong, so even if the frame rails aren't continuous, I know it won't fail.

Like my Peterbilt project truck, I decided to go with a planetary gear box, mounted under the cab. Space is even tighter with the Kenworth, so this will be a big help. I also like the simplicity of having a strong single speed transmission. I machined the frame connector to accept a 16:1 planetary gear box. A 20:1 is identical in dimensions, so if need be, I can switch to one.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Frameconnector2_zpscc45851d.jpg

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Frameconnector_zps0b3d84c7.jpg

Assembled, my front cross member, and the frame connector, serve as a good place to mount the steering servo.

These photos are before I machined the frame member 100%. The cut outs for the motor and wires haven't been machined yet, but in these photos, I was mostly checking the fit of the frame rails, as well as the fit of the servo.

Man that shop looks amazing!!! Some really beautiful examples he has, the truck near Warwick, England, I have been to before that he shows in his pictures, have a look at the Peterborough Truckfest, and also Shepton Mallet truck show, I go to these every year in England. Loads of videos on you tube! Peterborough Truckfest, is the UK's largest. The massive sheds display the Truck models, the set ups are great, and it was there that I wanted to get into building rigs. Every year someone famous is there, think last year, which I did not go to, was the Lady from Ice Road truckers she went!

Anyway, stop going on Sharkey, Espeefan, that quality of the work you are making is top work mate, really nice clean work on the step up frame piece!

Thanks Sharkey. I never really knew about the All American Toys Co. trucks until one day my friend Craig turned me onto them. He said 'I wonder if it could be RC'ed'. It would be about a two years later before I figured out the answer.

Steve, thanks. Yes, maybe one of these years I'll have a finished truck.

Thanks Craig! You and I both.

Nice!

Thanks Reg.

Thanks Aaron. My Wedico Peterbilt is mostly sidelined, and this Kenworth is now front and center! The idea is to put a truck together a little bit quicker, and this one should be simpler then the Peterbilt. Trucks of the '50s era were quite a bit simpler! Hopefully that will carry over to the model.

Thanks bigdogrod. Yes, I did know that. I guess I better bring this thread up to date then! I planned to go in chronological order, a little at a time, but since you found some of the details of my build, on their website, I'll show the rest here. Not all the details have been shown yet.

I stole the rear axles and suspension off the Wedico Peterbilt. :D I just wanted to check the ride height, and how the truck might look. The frame rails haven't been cut to length yet, so I'm still figuring out how long is to long. Oddly enough I bought these frame rail blanks for the Peterbilt too, but the Kenworth wanted them more!

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Ridesalittlehigh_zps34b44640.jpg

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Thetanksarebigbutjustforideas_zpsd1abdeea.jpg

It's nice to get a good visual sometimes. In the rear, you can see it's sitting a little high. I had the same problem with my Wedico Peterbilt, after lowering the front end, but I've got solution for that already. If it works on the KW, it will also work on the Peterbilt.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Fittingtheservo_zps421ec2cb.jpg

Since mouting the steering servo, I had to mill an opening in the cab base, so the base could sit on the chassis flat. The cab base, and cab have these mounting posts that I also milled off. They would have provided a way to attach the cab and floor together, and also to the All American Toys chassis, but for a model that will be functional, they had to go. I needed the room for electronics, and so I will have to figure out another way to mount the base to the chassis, and the cab to the base. I don't think this truck will have much an interior either. Space will dedicated to the functional bits instead. I do not think the seats will be staying for long.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Droppedrear_zps0d9d53f6.jpg

To get the truck leveled, I figured I would just notch the frame rails, so I could push the suspension bolster higher up, thus leveling the truck out. Not really rocket science, but it did take some time and planning. To keep the strength in the frame, I backed the notched area out with a backer plate. It's stronger now then it was before the frame was even cut.

I wasn't really happy with the Wedico cross members, so I machined my own. I just loosely based the designs off of photos of the real trucks I had seen, and while they aren't exact, they turned out nice. First the area below the 5th wheel. Then the cross member in front of it.

Bigdogrod, no harm done. The guys at All American Toys asked me what I was going to do with the Kenworth cab, when I ordered it. When I told them, they asked me to send some photos. After I did, they asked me if it was okay to post them on their site, as a work in progress. I said yes. If anything, it will give me a little extra push to try and get this one done before say....summer? :D I can hear some people laughing already! Ha ha.

Anyway, the guys who own and operate All American Toys are really good people. I don't think I've ever talked to more down to earth guys on the phone, or emailed. My hat is off to Patrick and Dean. Good customer service too. I give them credit for keeping it made in the USA.

Thanks 404. The knobby tires won't be staying. The rims are super singles, from Wedico, and I was only borrowing them from my Peterbilt, for mock-up. I put the knobby tires on these rims because the Wedico on-road wides tires were rubbing the fenders at full lock. The knobbys are a little narrower, and they got by. I don't think the truck will look right with super singles up front, as it's a vintage truck, so new rims and narrow (stock) width tires are in the plans.

I'm not sure about using the hex head screws. They would certainly look awesome! Have to think about it. I do like the socket head cap screws, in stainless too. Makes them look like the polished hardware caps they use on the show rigs, which cover the hex head bolts.

Thank you Reg. It means alot, coming from a builder like yourself. And yes, it is tiny! Smaller then the Wedico Peterbilt, and even that one is small, by your standards. Finished by next weekend though....probably not! :D

Thanks Mario. Definitely get yourself a milling machine! Best money I think I ever spent on tools for this hobby. You won't regret it. Nathan a Suggestion why don't you split the cab right down the middle and widen it as wide as you want it. Then epoxy some strips down the inside were you opened it up and then use some Lab Metal to fill the outside of the cab were you widened it. You could ad some material to the wheel wells they look a little to narrow. Ed

Kent, thanks. I wish it was moving along at light speed, but it's not. It's not exactly a snail's pace either, so I'm happy with that. It probably could run within a week, as the chassis only needs a servo drag link, a tie rod to steer, and the rest of the electronics could just be thrown on top! The cab isn't attached yet, but I'd have a roller at least.

Thank you Ed. I don't think I will attempt to widen the cab. I'm a horrible bodyman. I don't want to loose the needlenose proportions either. I don't mind it being narrow. I think it looks great. I've already built the chassis to suit it. That was easier, in my mind. Both the cab, and cab base, would have to be wider, to match. That's way to much work for me! :D Someone else could try it?

Anyway, I have some updates, but not enough time to post all the photos. So here is a teaser. It will have to do for now. More to come, for the weekend!

Thanks Craig. I have a laundry list of things to do on this truck yet. I need to narrow up another Wedico front axle, so my Peterbilt can have it's axle back. I need to make a drop visor, I would like to change a few things on the rear suspension, and I need to make some fuel tank saddles, but thankfully Kenworth's are much simpler then Peterbilts! I did a test piece yesterday, and I think it turned out pretty well, but it isn't quite what I want, so I'll be making a new test piece again soon. The old girl needs some stacks, some chicken lights, and I have to figure out how I'm going to mount the cab yet. I think, but I'm not sure, that the truck might get a winch also. Maybe a cable dump trailer is in the future? A good friend of mine sent me something for the truck too, which I'm pretty stoked about! I'll show that off a little bit later! :D

I'm not really sure what colors the truck will be yet. I would like to send it out for paint. Maybe seminole, red and black, or white and black. Or maybe something completely different.

I'm going to be a little short on time this weekend. Spending a little time withy family, but I'll share some of what I've got accomplished this week! :D

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/KWbumper_zps87cd0e6d.jpg

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/KWbumper2_zpsb84de26b.jpg

So the big things I got done are this. I machined up a front bumper and I got in a pair of Wedico front rims for the Kenworth. I think the rims make a big difference to the look of the truck. I've never seen any trucks of this vintage with super singles, and I love the look of the standard with tires. Kind of compliments the narrow hood.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/OptimusPrimeapproves_zps59daa008.jpg

Best part is the standard rims and tires allow the truck to have full lock steering, in both directions, so that is good. The super singles had a slight amount of rubbing.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Fulllocknorub_zps1fba74e2.jpg

I made a part so I could bolt up a front bumper. I tied it into the front suspension hangers, and the front cross member. The Osswald spring hangers looked like a weak link. The material is really thin, where the springs mount with a shoulder bolt, so the bumper mount will beef them up. :D The shoulder bolt passes through the hanger's ear, and threads right into the front bumper mount, as opposed to just having a nut on the back side.

In the rear of the chassis, I started making a frame taper section. I will get the cross member, and a tail light panel, machined up a bit later. I thought I'd make the taper pieces, rather then cut the frame rails. It just seemed easier, and stronger, to me, though it took more time I am sure!

I'll try and a few things done this weekend, but I we'll see how it goes. Still lots more to do, even though the Kenworth is looking a lot more like a truck now. Thanks for reading.....

Nathan the more the pic come the better it looks. How much did you have to narrow the front axle? It is coming along real;good and with the narrow tires it really came to life I think. Ed

Thanks, Ed. I think so too. The axle was narrowed quite a bit. About .6875" or about 17.5 mm. I am actually in the process of doing one right now, just for the KW. I stole the narrow axle in the photos, off my Peterbilt, for mock up purposes. It was a lift axle on that truck. The Peterbilt needs it back, so the KW has to have it's own. I think the narrow tires and rims fit the KW perfectly! I'll have to get some photos when the new axle is finished.

Paul, thank you very much! I've been trying to keep the pace up on this build. I want to have it done before summer. With the Peterbilt, I just got so bogged down on the details. This truck is a little easier (quicker) to build. No 6x6 drivetrain, the stance was already perfect, so it didn't need any lowering, it has no lift axle, just more basic, but classic.

What are you thinking for paint? I'm all ears. Been trying to find a paint scheme that I like. I'm open to ideas!

This is just amazing, you would be hard pushed to find a better Needlenose. Simply awesome and inspiring, the bar has been raised boys!

Thank you Sharkey! I'm just trying to keep up with the bar that has already been so high, for so long.

Dirthalr, thanks for posting some photos to get the creative mind thinking. I really do like that blue and flamed Kenworth, and I've seen photos of it circulating around the web. I probably won't go that crazy with the paint job though. I'm looking more for a working class show truck look. I could go really simple, with a two tone scheme, having black fenders, but I also have two other ideas. Seminole, or the classis paint scheme that has a triangular stripe. We'll see!

So the weekend came and went. I was busy with family, so I didn't get a lot done. This morning I finished up one thing I did have a chance to work on. I narrowed up a new front axle for the Kenworth, and made some spring perches.

Jammer had asked about how much I narrowed the axle, and here is a stock width one.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y127/Espeefan/New%20Wedico%20Peterbilt%20build/MilledWedicofrontaxle.jpg

Here is the one I narrowed for my Peterbilt, and stole for the KW.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Reasonforthenewspringperches_zpseca2bd8d.jpg

If you look really close at the photo, you'll see I had to relocate the front axle forward, just like guys with the Tamiyas do. Problem with that was I only had two screws holding the leaf spring pack to the axle. I machined a couple spring perches to extend the mounting pads of the axle back, pushing the axle forward. That gave me 4 screws, instead of just the two I had previously.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Howtonarrowandaxle_zpsadf7d5c8.jpg

Then a few pictures with the springs bolted down.

Thanks Ed! I do agree that some trucks can be over done, if they have to many lights on them, but I don't plan to go to crazy with this one. I will keep it tasteful. Not many vintage trucks have a ton of lights on them.

Dan, the photo of the locomotive is just under a plate of glass on my workbench because I like it. I'm also a model railroader. I use the glass for cutting styrene, soldering, and writing/drawing plans for parts. No other reason. Thanks for the comment on the axle!

Thank you Brian! I had my initial moment of doubt too, when I first recieved the cab, but once I threw a narrowed axle underneath it and saw how well it fit, I knew I could make something work.

I have about three classic KW paint schemes I like right now. Seminole, Yosemite, and Midnight Sun. Not really sure on the colors. Probably some sort of red, silver, and black, or maybe purple, silver, and black.

Travis, thanks for the comments! I guess you can't please everyone! I don't know why anyone would be upset about seeing someone do something different with their models. Thanks Aaron! Lights are good.... :D Speaking of which, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the headlights. I really want to find a way to make the All American Toys KW headlights functional. They are so Kenworth. I thought maybe I could mill an opening inside the housing, and fit a lense over the top. If that fails, I'll have to try and adapt something else. There are some other options out there. Maybe not many vintage KW looking lights, but still...

Travis, I hear you about converting Smith Miller trucks. I talked to a big collector (who has several custom trucks Autocar ect.) before and he seemed to tell me to use one of the Smith MIC cabs to do a conversion. I assured him I wouldn't take a rare Mack cab and cut it up. I have a beat up L model cab and was thinking how to build a heavy dump truck version. I don't know the proper model but one of my friends had two 1:1 trucks we used at our construction show. He has since sold them so getting measurements would be tough now.

Jimmy, I hope to get some bigger stacks for my truck too. Because it is a vintage truck, I'll probably keep the lights on the front and rear bumpers, the cab clearance lights, and maybe some lights in the back of the cab, but the way it looks, lights under the cab, on a skirt, are probably not going to work so well. Not much room there. I'd like some breather lights too, like the flamed KW you posted, but we'll see if I have the room. Sometimes I just like a clean truck, that's shaved of most all the lights. That look has started to grow on me.

Monigham, my friend Craig (Claus) and I talked about trying to build a truck like this probably 3 years ago too. At the time I thought it would be fun to try, but I had no idea I'd ever attempt it myself. I thought it would be to difficult. Funny how that works. I was getting really bogged down with my Peterbilt project, and wanted something a little easier to put together, and then the needlenose KW idea popped up again. While not exactly 'easy' to put together, I have been making better progress on this build, and hope to have a finished truck before summer! Hope I can keep the ball rolling. I think it's a unique model, and I like that it is different. I too like the needlenose trucks!

So from the sounds of it, Smith Miller trucks are not being produced anymore? Their website just has restored trucks, listed for sale, more less?

Aaron, I plan to take a ball nose end mill and see if I can't hollow out the headlight housing somehow, without destroying it. I've got a few readily available clear lenses that I think may fit the housing. It's something I'll get to a little later. There are lots of more important parts I'd like to machine first. A small update for the weekend. I've now got a tail light panel in the rear of the KW, along with a nice frame taper, and cross member. I tried a few different ideas and settled on this design. I didn't think the truck would look good with a t-bar rear bumper, since I will not be running full fenders. Most likely the KW will get a set of 1/4 fenders, and that's a bit more of a dressed up working truck look.

I'll have to make some mudflap hangers a little bit later, but playing around with Lynn's light bezels has been fun. They look really great. I am sticking with all clear lenses, everywhere on the truck. What do you guys think?

For those with the sharp eyes, the cab doesn't have a rear window in anymore because I messed up the original, which did! I had to order a new cab. Something about drilling to many holes in the first, for an excessive amount of cab clearance lights, and then changing my mind, so I could back to 7. Don't ask! :D

Reg, man, you post fast! I edited my orignal post, explaining the rear window missing. The first cab, that I milled the window in, was a bit of an experiment. I was going to try and fit 11 cab clearance lights on it, but changed my mind and wanted 7. I had to get a new cab. Suppose I could have plugged the holes, but that would have bothered me forever, so a new cab it was.

It does have a lot bolts, doesn't it? When you can't tig weld aluminum, you have to resort to bolting. :p

Okay guys, here's a small update. Fuel tank saddles! These things, I tell you, they test my patience, no matter what kind of truck I'm building. Machining the ones used on my Wedico Peterbilt was way tougher, but these Kenworth style tank saddles are not going quite as easy as I thought they would. Never the less, I've made some headway.

I made a test piece first, to see if my ideas would even work. It didn't turn out to bad. The test piece is the only one in the following photo that has been machined to a finished state (more or less), and it's standing upright.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Makingtanksaddles_zps5a973fb2.jpg

The other five pieces are still in a semi-raw state.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Tanksaddlesagain_zps1630ef5a.jpg

I made five, for those 'oops, just in case' mistakes. I only need to get four right. One can be a practice piece. :D Here is the first test piece, bolted to the truck. The radius is larger then it should be, but hey, that's why it's a test piece! The tanks are going to be 1.5" in diameter, when it's all said and done.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Fueltanksaddles_zps4f7de55f.jpg

Don't mind the oil and 'luminum chips! I guess I didn't wipe them all off, for the photo!

Just a little mock-up photo to see how everything might look. The quarter fender is not permanently mounted yet. I'm not sure on the exact placement yet, but it does look decent right where it's at. The fuel tanks are going to be shorties. I like the way they look, and it's fitting, for a day cab.

And a couple of the quarter fender.

Oh GOD, GET OUT!!! This is Amazing!!! I had was at an all out shock at first thinking what year or when did Wedico release that cab. Then as I read on I learned where it came from in which I have never seen or came across one of their models in raw form. Needless to say its quite on-par with the Wedico stuff in the quality and finish, the size also mates nicely with the WDC layout. I had always wanted to see one of these side by side with a WDC as I knew their scale is quite close, and I've also seen some of their trailers mated with WDC's in the pass. But this is the ultimate as its one of their cabs mated to a WDC layout. Truly amazing fit and finish. The **** with paint, the look good as this sit in raw form. And also because of it being in a raw finish it also highlights that these trucks is fully metalized and the real deal, and it also really shows how top quality these trucks really area.

Thanks Loaded_Heavy. There isn't much Wedico left in this truck. About all that is Wedico would be the rims, tires, front axle, and the blank frame rails. I'd say the rear axles are Wedico too, but I don't know how much longer they are going to be holding up the rear of the chassis!

Absolutely amazing....

Thank you Mama Sue!

Your metal working is fantastic! It really gives this build a lot of realism. Keep up the great work!

Thank you Bigrigger!

Is that a second dab in post #66?

Chris

Chris, yes, I have two of these cabs. It's explained why in the previous posts. :D We'll just say there was a whoops! For mock-up sake, I use which ever is closest to my reach.

Time for a weekend update! Work continues on the tank saddles. I have them to the point where I only need to drill one more hole, and then make the straps. The straps will be attached to the upper mounting ears, at the top, and then hopefully I'll have a tension screw to pull the strap tight, at the bottom of the saddle. Just like the real thing, only smaller! :D

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Tanksaddlesshortietank_zps10cb8cdc.jpg

The mock-up tank is just a piece of tube. It's the correct diameter, but hopefully I can have someone make me a proper set of tanks, that will look nicer. Hopefully no one is getting tired of looking at the same parts, as they evolve.

All right guys, another weekend, another update. Nothing to big going on this time. Work continues again, on the tank saddles (still?!?). Finishing up some minor little things. I machined up some parts for securing the tank straps, but I haven't started on the straps themselves just yet. :D They might be the hardest part to make. I've been putting them off! But, I do have some fuel tanks now!

Thanks Mario! Ha ha, yes, the Pete does look like it's sitting in an RC scrap pile. All it needs is a few weeds and tall grass growing around it.

So you're saying my pipes are to big? :D My intention while building this Kenworth was to go for a bit of a resto-rod look. It will have stacks. These might be a little large, but I'm going to try them anyway. In 1/16 scale, they measure out to be 8". I'll have to see if an equally large visor will pull the stacks together. :p I may downsize on the pipes a little.

I spent a little more time working on the Kenworth today. I decided it was time to start working on the tank straps. This was a bit of trial and error, bending these buggers up, but I managed to figure out the best techinique to make them. I was able to finish one of them, but the others will have to wait. I destroyed my 5/64" end mill, when one of the straps slipped in my vise, so now I have to order a new one. I'm pretty happy with the way the first one turned out. I hope the luck will continue with the rest!

Small update, before I get ready for work this afternoon. I managed to find a brand new 5/64" end mill, still in a McMaster-Carr shipping box, while I was cleaning up the workbench. The ones I ordered, to replace the one I broke, are already on the way and should be here today, but since I found a brand new one in my stash, I was able to finish the tank straps this morning! :D I guess I really didn't need to order two replacements. Funny thing is I knew I had more then one. I just couldn't find the extra.

Anyway, as if you guys hadn't seen enough tank strap photos, here are a few more.

Ken, thanks. For colors, I think I'd like to go with some combination of red, black, and silver. Or maybe orange, black, and silver. Then again maybe something totally different - purple, black, and silver? Hard to say. I think when the metal work is done I will have made up my mind. I also think I might send the cab out for custom paint. I'm not very good at that.

The rubber looks and acts very scale. I'm happy about that. I'd sure like to get some polished weights on the bottom of the flaps, and maybe a Cummins C logo, but for now, I'm happy with them! To bad I can't find someone who can photo etch the Cummins C for me, out of some thin stainless. I thought about checking with a graphics shop. Maybe they'd be able to print a sticker out of a chrome vinyl sheet or something?

Ken, thanks. For colors, I think I'd like to go with some combination of red, black, and silver. Or maybe orange, black, and silver. Then again maybe something totally different - purple, black, and silver? Hard to say. I think when the metal work is done I will have made up my mind. I also think I might send the cab out for custom paint. I'm not very good at that.

How about this...

there is a guy on RCC that goes by the screen name MTHead, that can make the cummings logo you're after, and it'll be chrome. he's very reasonable as well. here's a pic of a custom grill emblem he made for me for my yota crawler.

it actually has sorta brushed aluminum look, and has a satin black outline, and they are self adhesive. he can make you anything you want, any size scale.

That's pretty darn fancy! I like some things about the paint scheme, but not everything! Stacks should be chrome, or stainless. :D Still thinking about color ideas, but I haven't decided yet.

And now for an update!

Love'em or hate'em, I finally made up a set of big fat stacks for the 1950 KW, and because I needed the cab to be removable for battery access, I also ended up maching a set of stack mounts, so the stacks could be left on the chassis.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Stackingit2brighter_zpsd43a1658.jpg

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Stackmounts_zps7fc3aaa4.jpg

Don't worry, the zip ties are just temporary. :D When I get the stacks drilled for mounting holes, scews will hold everything together. The stack height is yet to be determined, although it's pretty darn close to where the stacks will sit. I am also planning on making some cross bracing to tie the stack mounts together, and they will probably bolt to the chassis deck plate, which is yet to come.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Stackmountsclose_zpsf6248ca8.jpg

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Gotstacks_zpsc9aa7a53.jpg

I'll have to send the stacks out for chroming, eventually. I found a somewhat local chromer, in my state that I'm going try out. As soon as I get a few finishing touches done on the mounts, and stacks, off they'll go! I'm kind of looking forward to that. I hope they turn out nice.

Thanks Jimmy! Yes, I will have a rear window. I just haven't got around to milling it open yet. Lots of more complex things I'd rather work on first, you know? :D I think the window will be one of the easier things to finish.

That is a hot rod engine, in the background, and a partially completed pinewood derby car for the engine to go into. There is an annual adult pinewood derby car contest that is put on by a local group every year. I thought I'd give it a shot, just for fun.

Jimmy, good idea, although I feel an oval window look better on a Peterbilt. Just because the Peterbilt emblems are oval too. I really don't have an easy way to mill out an oval either. I'd have to ask one my machinist friends at work to do it with one of the CNC mills. We'll see!

Santa 'Claus' dropped off an early Christmas present. :D Thanks Craig. You are a heck of a friend. A little bit of the Hillbilly Deluxe will live on with the Kenworth now. I spent a little time this afternoon cleaning up the casting lines on the new axles, and swapping the hardware for stainless screws and nuts. They'll look great when, and if, I paint them now.

It might be hard to see, but I am re-working the torque and radius rod mounts, so I can get improved 4 link geometery. I machined up a couple blocks that bolt to the bolsters, replacing the original L-brackets that were used before. I'm also going to work on new top link mounts for the axles. More pictures to come, as I make some progress.

Mario, thanks. Nah, your idea isn't so crazy! I've thought of different ways to mount the stacks too, and this is my favorite idea. I'm going to machine up a couple more braces, and tie them into the vertical posts. I like the headache rack / drom box idea, but I wanted to emphasize the day cab look, and not cover up the rear window, once it's milled in. I had some thoughts to mount a winch behind the cab......I don't know about that yet. I thought about building a vintage cable end up trailer to go with the truck, but I might just scratch that idea. Still to soon to tell! :D

I know it's been a couple weeks since the last update, so here is the latest! :D This little piece has been taking up a lot of my time. The first version I made didn't work out right, so I had to remake it. Call it R&D, I suppose. It wasn't so much a failure, as it was a learning experience, but here is the result of the 2nd try, and it's a good one.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Newcrossmemberfortherear2_zpsdd1daf0e.jpg (http://s1159.photobucket.com/user/espeefan4449/media/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Newcrossmemberfortherear2_zpsdd1daf0e.jpg.html)

My new rear frame cross member. I wanted to rework the truck's rear suspension links, and stiffen the whole chassis up, so rather then make more parts to bolt onto the original (smaller) rear member, I redesigned it, and made a completely new one. I should note that I was planning on machining the gusset straight, along the bottom edge, but after doing the angle cuts up the sides, I took it out of the vise to reposition it and thought 'hey, that looks like of cool, maybe I'll leave it looking like a upside down 'W' or a Batman symbol.' :D What do you guys think? Kind of custom looking, if not 100% prototypical.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Newrearcrossmember_zps4ae19d55.jpg (http://s1159.photobucket.com/user/espeefan4449/media/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Newrearcrossmember_zps4ae19d55.jpg.html)

It ties the rear Osswald suspension trunnions into the upper frame connectors and chassis, as well as providing a better place for the axle's upper 4 links to mount to. You'll see more photos of that, in a bit, but first.....

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/NewRustaxle4linkmount_zps739a0b1a.jpg (http://s1159.photobucket.com/user/espeefan4449/media/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/NewRustaxle4linkmount_zps739a0b1a.jpg.html)

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Osswaldwithalittlecustomwork_zps9f85b094.jpg (http://s1159.photobucket.com/user/espeefan4449/media/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Osswaldwithalittlecustomwork_zps9f85b094.jpg.html)

One thing that I didn't exactly like about the Osswald suspension was the way the upper 4 links crossed over each other. It might as well have been a 3 link suspension, so I changed it to a true 4 link, and made a center mount for each axle.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Rustaxlesreadytomountup2_zpsf52432f9.jpg (http://s1159.photobucket.com/user/espeefan4449/media/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Rustaxlesreadytomountup2_zpsf52432f9.jpg.html)

Here is a photo of the new rear cross member, tied into the Osswald trunnions, along with the new axles and their proper 4 link geometery.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Newrearendsnew4links_zps24444b3c.jpg (http://s1159.photobucket.com/user/espeefan4449/media/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Newrearendsnew4links_zps24444b3c.jpg.html)

From the top....

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Newrearends2_zps834e6011.jpg (http://s1159.photobucket.com/user/espeefan4449/media/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Newrearends2_zps834e6011.jpg.html)

And as long as I was in the mood of changing things over in the rear, I picked up a set of new driveshafts for the Kenworth.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Newdriveshafts2_zps5ee7a5b7.jpg (http://s1159.photobucket.com/user/espeefan4449/media/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Newdriveshafts2_zps5ee7a5b7.jpg.html)

These Ultra Scale shafts are beautiful! The shaft which runs between the tandems is border line short, although it is not really in any danger of coming apart. I may have to buy a little longer one, and cut it to length to fit perfectly, but for now, it will be okay! :D

Thanks for looking. Enjoy the weekend.

Beautiful work again Nathan. Like how you used the brass nuts to space the links and make everything line up like it should. The only thing you may want to consider for scale purposes, I think in the 1:1 world there would be a member running from one bolster to the other across the bottom but then again you don't need it.

I do love that scale driveshaft!

Thanks Reg! Not so much a case of no-postitis. It was more a case of re-makitis! :D While it is a pain, sometimes, to go backwards with a build, the results are worth the effort, if you can do something better the second time around. This is a build as you go, kind of project.

Despite this build falling off pace for a bit, I haven't stopped working on it. I got a couple things done last week, and this weekend. Here is an update.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/KWsteeringlinkage_zps0b5fe7ec.jpg (http://s1159.photobucket.com/user/espeefan4449/media/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/KWsteeringlinkage_zps0b5fe7ec.jpg.html)

We have steering! Boy, I could almost drive this thing now, if I just quick threw a battery, ESC, and receiver into it.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/KWackermansteeringright_zpsd506b7ec.jpg (http://s1159.photobucket.com/user/espeefan4449/media/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/KWackermansteeringright_zpsd506b7ec.jpg.html)

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/KWackermansteeringleft_zps05e83e60.jpg (http://s1159.photobucket.com/user/espeefan4449/media/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/KWackermansteeringleft_zps05e83e60.jpg.html)

For the purists....proper ackerman steering geometery! I think this truck is going to handle nice. Look close and you'll see the inside wheel turns sharper then the outside. I think the turning radius is going to be really good. I'm happy about that.

And then I worked on something I had been putting off over and over again. Figuring out how to mount the cab to the truck. It's two pieces, in case you couldn't tell. :D The cab base mounts to the chassis, and the cab to the cab base. As a toy, the cab is more less held to the cab base with some cast in bosses but I had to mill those off to make room for the electronics inside. That left everything floating free. After thinking a great deal about how to mount the cab to the chassis, yet have it be removable, this is what I came up with.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Cabbasesecuredtochassis_zps8bc11e0e.jpg (http://s1159.photobucket.com/user/espeefan4449/media/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Cabbasesecuredtochassis_zps8bc11e0e.jpg.html)

I machined some blocks to bolt the cab base to the chassis. In the blocks, I milled a keyway, front and rear. I also had to mill the cast cab seats off, but that was some time ago....

Inside the cab, I bolted on some keys to fit the keyways. This way the cab is aligned perfectly, and it cannot slide forward, backward, or side to side. It took some math, some trial and error, some test pieces, and a lot of patience, but the results are great.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Insidethecab_zpsebf6f2c0.jpg (http://s1159.photobucket.com/user/espeefan4449/media/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Insidethecab_zpsebf6f2c0.jpg.html)

As a plus, there are no screw heads showing anywhere on the outside of the cab. They are drilled and tapped from the inside out.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Frontkeyway_zpsa2653c6a.jpg (http://s1159.photobucket.com/user/espeefan4449/media/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Frontkeyway_zpsa2653c6a.jpg.html)

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Rearkeyway_zps912dd9d4.jpg (http://s1159.photobucket.com/user/espeefan4449/media/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Rearkeyway_zps912dd9d4.jpg.html)

The keys have a T-shape to them. This is to allow the keys to only side into their respective keyways to a specific depth. I also have found some 1/8 diameter magnets that I think I will use to hold the cab to the base. I'll probably mill a shallow bore on each side of the T's, glue a magnet to each, and then do the same in the cab base mounts. When they line up, they'll snap into place. The magnets are rated at .7 pounds of pull each, and with two in the rear, and two in the front, (should be 2.8 pounds pull combined) I'm hoping that will be strong enough to hold the cab on, with the truck flipped upside down. Not that it will spend much time like that...

One more photo, showing how it all lines up.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Mountingthecab_zps6eb48f2a.jpg (http://s1159.photobucket.com/user/espeefan4449/media/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Mountingthecab_zps6eb48f2a.jpg.html)

I'm really glad this step is all done. Now to start making some electronic mounting plates for the 10 pounds of stuff I have to fit inside the 5 pound bag! :D

Thank you Lou! I'd love to try some CNC machining someday. I guess there are a few retro-fit CNC kits out there for my mini-mill, but I think I'd probably invest in a CNC Bridgeport, if I could afford it. That's probably years away though! I definitely agree on the sleepless nights!

Wow, that steering is awesome. Really like the way you hollowed out your front bumper too, that must have taken some time.

Thanks Craig. I had to hollow out the bumper for some tire clearance. With the axle pushed forward and the arc the wheels swing in, I needed just a little clearance for them, and as long as I was hollowing it out, I kept going, knowing the LEDs would need to fit in there too.

The detail you are putting into this truck is amazing! Can't wait to see more.

Thanks Petermoblin.

I know the updates have fallen off pace a little, but with summer here, I've been busy doing a lot of other things outside. I think everyone's builds have experienced the same problem, but I have been working on my truck at night, or when it's to hot outside! :D Here is the latest...

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Cheesegraderdeckplate_zpsd5105c84.jpg (http://s1159.photobucket.com/user/espeefan4449/media/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Cheesegraderdeckplate_zpsd5105c84.jpg.html)

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Deckplatebraces_zps2299a33c.jpg (http://s1159.photobucket.com/user/espeefan4449/media/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Deckplatebraces_zps2299a33c.jpg.html)

I decided to make a cross brace for my stack mounts, to make them more rigid. The stacks are pretty tall, and I thought it would be a good idea to tie them into the chassis at more then just one point. While I was at it, I also machined a deck plate. It was the most time consuming thing I've done so far, I think! :D I lost count after 315 holes, but it looks cool. Cheese grater and all.... It also hides the screws that hold my planetary gearbox to the chassis, so it kills two birds with one stone.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Deckplatestackbraces_zps57af73a9.jpg (http://s1159.photobucket.com/user/espeefan4449/media/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Deckplatestackbraces_zps57af73a9.jpg.html)

Honestly, there isn't a ton of machining left to do with this truck. Some small things, but it's getting ever closer to completion, which amazes me! Kind of. :D Next up, I've got to work on my 5th wheel plate, some cab details, and some mounting plates for the electronics. Hopefully those parts will go a little faster, as long as I don't have to drill to many holes! Whew...

Jimmy, thanks! I wish I had a CNC machine. I would have definitely used it for the deck plate. I drilled the holes over the course of three days. :D I just got tired of drilling them, after an hour or two of doing it, so then I'd go do something else and come back the next day.

Happy 4th of July everybody. Hope you all enjoyed the holiday. I didn't watch any fireworks this year. Instead I spent the day baling hay with my dad, and then afterward, a little time in the workshop, working on the Kenworth build. I managed to get my 5th wheel plate mounted to the truck.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Fifthwheelmountingplate_zps25f424ce.jpg (http://s1159.photobucket.com/user/espeefan4449/media/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Fifthwheelmountingplate_zps25f424ce.jpg.html)

I machined up a plate that bolts to chassis and doesn't interfere at all with my rear cross member. Originally I planned to use a Wedico 5th wheel, but I later changed my mind, wanting something more scale that fit better. For a while I thought I'd try and design a way to slide the 5th wheel, but after thinking about it, drawing plans, and measuring things I decided against it. It would have been fun for the cool factor, but in reality I just didn't see myself moving the 5th wheel anyway. Making it permanent allowed me to have a slimmer low profile look, which is exactly what I was after.

Here's a photo of the Wedico 5th wheel, compared to the Scale Art Jost 5th wheel I went with. I thought something looked a little 'off' about the Wedico 5th wheel. The height bothered me too. It's a lot taller then the Scale Art 5th wheel and there is no way to lower it down. I could gone lower on the Scale Art, but left it a little bit higher for more articulation.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Fifthwheelheight_zps54991b1e.jpg (http://s1159.photobucket.com/user/espeefan4449/media/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/Fifthwheelheight_zps54991b1e.jpg.html)

The Scale Art 5th wheel has a lot finer detail, and I'm glad I decided to purchase it. I think it looks great sitting on the chassis. At least now the truck will be able to pull something! :D Thanks for looking.

All right fellas, just a few pictures to prove the Kenworth hasn't been put on the back burner completely, even though the summer weather makes it harder to stay indoors, and hide by the workbench. :D

I've been playing around with electronics on the truck. There is a lot to fit, and after trying a lot of different combinations, and arrangements, I've settled on this one. It's the only one that lets me fit everything in place, halfway decent, and still get the cab on.

It looks like a mess right now, but I'm going to do my best to tidy things up. Nothing is permanent yet. I will be shortening all the wires I can, and securing them with zip ties or something better.

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/10poundsofcrapina5poundbag_zps04e1172f.jpg (http://s1159.photobucket.com/user/espeefan4449/media/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/10poundsofcrapina5poundbag_zps04e1172f.jpg.html)

Speaker in the front, under the hood (should be great hearing the engine in the right spot), battery pack behind it, centered up, and my Servonaut M20+ on one side of the battery, and the Servonaut SMX on the other. I also have to fit the Servonaut infrared trailer transmitter and my radio receiver on the truck, and these will most likely be mounted underneath the cab, because they are small enough to fit well there.

Kent, it will be pretty interesting. I would like to use a couple terminal strips to route and keep the wiring job tidy, but we'll see how much space I have. I will most likely need to branch multiple circuits off the same terminals...either those on the M20+, or off a terminal strip. Might do a combination of both.

Mario, yup, the windows are going to be all tinted on this one, but I decided having lights and sound was worth loosing the interior. My speaker mount is home made. One half is actually part of my battery tray, and at the front half has a real simple spacer with a screw passing though it. Servonaut does make a speaker box for this particular speaker, but it's to big to fit under the hood, so I'll save it for another project. If you are looking for some posts to mount your speaker to, take a look at McMaster-Carr. Do a search for 'stand offs' and you'll get a lot of results. You can also search for 'spacers' and you'll find round ones like I used. I'm going to be changing mine out, in the front. I haven't ordered the stand off I want to use, but it is a post with a male threaded portion on one end, and a female on the other. That way the male end can tighten down my battery plate, and stay there. If I want to remove the speaker, I can thread (or unthread) a screw into the top of the stand off post, since it's a female thread.

Here are a couple better pictures of the speaker. The earlier photos were a little hard to see what was going on. The acrylic plate I used still had the protective paper on it, and the electronics hid some details. Take a look at these....

Sorry Reg, nothing new to show on this project right now. I ran into a case of having to remake some new parts that I am not happy with, so until I can figure them out to my liking, there probably won't be much to talk about. Remaking parts three times over starts to kill my motivation, but once the cold weather hits, I'll get back into the swing of things.

Hello guys, thanks for the nice comments. As always it's appreciated. I know some time has passed since my last update. The truth is I got a little side tracked and lost some motivation for this project truck, but I'm slowly (as always :D) working on getting back some momentum, starting off by finishing up a new cab visor!

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/KWgetsavisor5_zps50d01938.jpg (http://s1159.photobucket.com/user/espeefan4449/media/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/KWgetsavisor5_zps50d01938.jpg.html)

Turns out making a great cab visor is not very easy. It was kicking my butt for a few months. I must have made 4 or 5 of these things, at about two hours a piece. The more I made, the better they got, but it was a bit frustrating putting all the time into making visors that never quite fit right, or looked good. Finally I have one that I am happy with!

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/KWgetsavisor7_zps02d0266f.jpg (http://s1159.photobucket.com/user/espeefan4449/media/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/KWgetsavisor7_zps02d0266f.jpg.html)

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/p631/espeefan4449/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/KWgetsavisor4_zps73fe0770.jpg (http://s1159.photobucket.com/user/espeefan4449/media/1950s%20Kenworth%20Needlenose/KWgetsavisor4_zps73fe0770.jpg.html)

It's a big show truck looking drop visor, with a little bowtie mixed in, cut and formed by hand out of .032" thick aluminum. I mounted the visor to the cab with four 0-80 screws. It's pretty fun drilling and tapping small screws like this in aluminum (not!). I had to do it by hand, and thankfully all the holes lined up great!

Hey Nathan, have you considered anodizing the truck instead of paint? Looking good!

Thanks Neil. Yes, I have considered anodizing more than once. Especially for the for the chassis and axles. The thing that worries me about anodizing is I think that process builds up a protective, hardened layer on the aluminum and I haven't accounted for that. I am worried things would not fit back together again, as I haven't machined my parts undersized to allow for it. I'm also worried that some parts might get lost in the process, or in transit. For the cab, it's a casting, and not quite perfect, even though it's pretty nice. There are some minor little low spots and things I would like to smooth over with body filler. Anodizing wouldn't really cover those well, unless I went with a matte type finish, and I think I'd rather have a shiny truck. Hmmm, matte black or blue, with polished aluminum parts though....? :D

That's a sweet looking shell, Trucker_Jo! I think if I do any painting, I'll be sending the cab out for a custom job. The chassis painting, I can handle. Actually, let's put it this way. I do fine painting single color schemes. It's the masking I am not good at, with multi-color schemes. Hydro-dipping is something I never considered. Might be an option! Thanks.

Been working on these little buggers for a while now. I just finished soldering up the LEDs for one of the air cleaner light brackets this morning. I still have the other to do yet. It's a lesson in patience, soldering the LEDs inside the brackets. It took me 2 or 3 hours, but at least one is pretty much done!

Both, from above.

I haven't got to the breathers yet, but the plan is to mount them against the machined saddle, on the face of the brackets. Might have to get a little help making the breathers, as I don't have my own lathe......

Happy Memorial Day to everyone, especially all of the veterans and those who are in active duty. My thanks to all of you who have helped maintain our freedoms and way of life!

I figured with a 3 day weekend I would (should) do some more work on my Kenworth. :D I enlisted the help of a friend of mine from work, who was kind enough to turn down some aluminum stock for me on the lathe. I gave him the material and my drawings, and he gave me back my air cleaners. Special thanks to Ron. They are actually pretty simple parts. I just bought some precision ground .75" round stock, so nothing needed to be turned beyond the relief cuts for the screens. All in all a pretty simple job, but something I couldn't do because I don't have a lathe. Maybe I should get one!

On with the photos!

They still need a final polishing and a bit of clean up, but it shouldn't take much to get them looking flawless. I thought for the old Kenworth strapless air cleaners would look best. Sort of going for a resto-rod project truck here.

For a little extra touch of style, I planned to illuminate the inside of the air cleaner screens with an LED. I've always loved this look on the 1:1 trucks. I have blue LEDs on order for the truck, but just to see how it would look I stuck a red LED inside, temporarily.

Thank you Lou, I appreciate that. I am not sure about trying to paint this truck myself. Paint and I really don't get along to well. I would like to send the cab out to someone for a really nice finish, but I will probably paint the chassis myself. The only way I would tackle painting the cab is if it's going to be a simple one or two color scheme. Whenever masking is involved, I always get some bleeding.

Okay, so it's a beautiful day outside and thought I would snap some pictures of the Kenworth in some natural sunlight. I spent some time working on the cab. I removed and sanded the original passenger side cast on air cleaner mount to make room for the new ones I machined. Big John, thanks. Maybe 'Attitude' would be a good name for the truck. I kind of do want to name it something, and then have a sticker with the name made for the rear window, once I get it milled out and glass installed.

Thank you Jimmy! For the headlights, I have a couple ideas. I like the look of the All American Toys headlights, because they are true Kenworth replicas, but if I can't light them up, I'll have to go with a round single from another source. Maybe PMD or something. But for the All American Toys headlights, I was hoping I could take a ball nose end mill and hollow out the centers, than find a clear lens that would fit over the front. Run the wires for an LED out the bottom or something. We'll see. I don't think it will be very easy! The truck does look good in it's raw form, but I think I'll still paint it!

Not much in the way of BIG updates right now, but I've gone back and made a few little changes, to jazz things up a bit. My original stack mounts looked kind of boring, and I felt like they needed a little something more to dress them up, so I clamped them back in the mill and made some detail/relief cuts.

Just a little something to go a long way to improving the looks. At least I think so. And if you're here checking out my thread, I thought I would throw in a few extra photos. I hadn't seen the Kenworth back together with the new visor, air cleaners, and stacks, so I just couldn't help myself. :D

Wow Nathan, long ways from the toy it was meant to be. Are your stacks and breathers the same diameter?

Thanks Craig. Yes, I think they are just about the same diameter. The stacks are 5/8" I.D. so the O.D. probably is 3/4", which is the same O.D. as my air cleaners. A little overkill........maybe. :D

Thanks Big John! Yes, I wanted a sort of old school, retro rod look, mixed in with some modern touches. Kind of like a pro-touring late 60's muscle car. Best of both worlds!

Thanks wolfws6! Those solder joints were a lesson in patience. Solder a layer to build some low spots up, sand, check for more low spots, and repeat. It took some time to get it all smooth. Especially if I used too much heat and melted all of the solder to the point that it started to flow off the copper, making me more low spots!
