Thanks Joe. Just a heads up on these lights. Once again I should have done a little more research but fortunately I have a plan B.
Back in crappy tire today and thought, maybe I'll get some spare batteries for these little lights. Almost had a heart attack when I realized it costs almost 12 bucks for 3 batteries!..... I bought every light they had on the shelf! 9 of them! How can they sell for 4 bucks when batteries cost 3 times that!?
Anyway, no replacements, I'll be powering the lot of them from a external power source once batteries go dead thank you very much!:rolleyes::)

I'm guessing they are 6v so one big lead acid in the "office building" should do the trick!

Yup, that's what I was thinking. :).... And thanks Reg, just gave me an idea! Definitely need a sign above the door that says " office " :D:cool:
Looking good Mario!
Thanks Kent! I'm really happy with how it's looking. :). All those hours standing and staring at the yard trying to figure out what to do and where last year are just starting to pay off. The yard feels so much more alive is the best way to describe the feeling as I walk around.
Best part is the new motivation to keep going :bounce: the weight scale is next.
Speaking of motivated, I finally got both conveyors officially done and all issues ironed out. The treadmill belt conveyor was giving me tracking problems. After 10 minutes or so, the belt would wander. Turned out to be a simple fix. Wrapped a strip of electrical tape about 5 times around the center of the drive roller. Gave it just enough of a hump to keep the belt from walking. Ran it for over 20 minutes and it now stays bang on, didn't move at all.:)
The screener conveyor needed a wiper or brush to keep the dirt off the back side of belt. I mentioned an idea I had awhile back and finally got it done today.
A few pics... Hard to get a good angle and show it but I'm sure you get the idea.

....ya, who am I kidding :D. It's whatever I feel like doing one day to the next. Some days play, some build stuff:D
It's great to have a play area but I can't help but think my RC fleet is as big as it is because of the play zone! no zone, I'd probably would have stuck with a couple trucks and trailers! So for anyone thinking about building a play zone....be fore warned! ;):cop::lol:

It's a real zippy car Kent. Too much so, and the front spoiler is so close to the ground this car is just for show right now. There are a couple spots on the roads where shingles overlap and I could see this car come to a grinding halt real quick or maybe do a couple end overs :lol:
I need to rework the front end on it before she's ready for the shingle road but once it's ready your welcome to come up and be the Roscoe P Coletrain of the county. :D:lol:

The entire area never sees direct sunlight And stays much cooler than the rest of yard. The tree canopy is so dense that even light rainfall can't be felt. Just yesterday we got enough rain to get the grass and concrete wet ( maybe half hour sprinkle ) and yet not a drop felt in the park.
Unfortunately I do need to bring in some stone and good packing material. the dirt from the pit does pack well and has a good consistency to it but turns out once I run it through the screener and if no rain for a few days, I end up with literal beach sand! the screener removes the good stuff and there's less of that then the sand!
For now I need to get a few pails of stone but hoping next year to get a few yards and start giving the area some elevation changes here and there and help with road building.

True to form, thinking of another build project.
I bought a cheap hobby engine crawler crane a few years ago with plans to upgrade the electronics and see if I could dig dirt or atleast feed the screener with it. Well, within a matter of months the cheap plastic tracks ( sure ain't rubber ) all cracked, split and fell apart. No big deal but it adds to the cost of upgrading and with exchange rates as they are makes it too costly.
Well I'm famous for plan B and here it is!
I'm going to use this as a dock crane. None of my cargo is actually heavy so no upgrades needed to the boom and hoist system. Just going to put a hook on it, modify the sprockets to drive on rails along the dock and install a ESC to control tramming speed.:D

At first I was thinking of just cutting a hole in the dock and dropping the crane in to conceal the lower structure but figure the rails idea will make it much more versatile.

I like that idea Joe! I was worried that if I made rails out of wood they could warp in the elements but cutting slots won't move and should work......I'm gonna test that out on a chunk. Thanks :)

Thanks RW. I agree being able to move is a big plus. I figure this way I can load a trailer parked in the dock slot or can park a trailer parallel along the dock and load there.....for those who can't back the trailer into a slot...:lol:... Not me though! I've got video proof I can do it!

Just got home from a trip to visit family and friends. While we were gone I happened to walk through the dollar store withi the wife and discovered some really cool mini lights!
I'm very happy with the lights I found at crappy tire and thought I was doing good with 4 bucks per light. But these other lights are much better and cheaper! Very bright, head and arm pivot and hold in whatever position, kinda look like street lights and..... 1.25 each. Replacement battery cost is 3 for 1.25.
So a win win and of course I cleaned them out :). 10 lights for just under 15 bucks, can't go wrong.
So for all you Canadians on the forum, keep an eye out for these at your local dollarama. :)

Got my street lights built using 3 simple ingredients. 1/2" plumbers plastic tubing, some of those wooden plug filler things and the lights I got from Dollar Tree. Which I'm now told is US based so not just a Canadian store.
Anyway, here's how they turned out. Once again, simple, but effective.:D

For the longest time I've been trying to think of a name for the park. Eventually want to create a town with various buildings and maybe a railway. ( Mike :D ) so at first I was thinking of calling it Suemarville. Recently I asked a few buddies in our club what they thought. One of them had a great suggestion, we have foxes in our yard on a daily basis. There's a mother and 2 Cubs that come and play, relax or just pass through our backyard. He suggested we call it Foxville.
i like it! :D

Due to my own stupidity I accidentally connected battery power to my screening plant with wrong polarity the other day. It ultimately caused a meltdown of a ESC when the magic smoke got out.
Fortunately it didn't bring the entire operation to a halt. Just lost the vibration motor on the off loading chute.

In the meantime, I have enough material to run through screener and do some road base work.So today I got about 6-7 loads done when I snapped the Z arm pin on the loader which really brings things to a halt!...when it rains it pours! Can't complain though, just a fact of wear n tear. I'm glad it happened now late in the season. i can come up with a quick fix to get me through the next month then have all winter to upgrade proper.:)

Cuts into play time way too much. I need to up my game and get a real video camera and tripod! ( hey! Sounds like my Xmas wish list all of a sudden! :D )

Finally caught up with the dirt pile from the pit. Got home today and thought about doing some digging in the pit for the first time in months. A beautiful hot day today and didn't feel like brining out the hoe, truck, conveyor.... So to heck with that, all I want to do is dig for an hour so just like old days before I had all this stuff, I grabbed the hoe and went digging that's it. :)
Seems I've gotten a little wiser since my early days of digging and dealing with roots. Before I would just rip and tear at them not worried about the machine ( testing limits I guess. ) but now I know better and have made the root work more fun to deal with.
Instead of catching and trying to rip them out, when I find them I expose and work around them. Its great practice at doing more precise digging. Made me think of what digging around water lines would be like.
Only one trip from the basement, an hour in the pit and mission accomplished. Stress of the day is gone, the weekend begins and I dug some dirt.:D

Something I've been wanting to do all summer. Make a video of the entire process. Been avoiding the task because I knew it would be a lot of work and just wasn't up for it. Well, this is probably the last beautiful weather weekend we're going to have this year so I finally got er done!
Sit down get comfy, my longest video yet. I'm no videographer by any means but enjoy trying this kind of thing. :)
Hope everyone is entertained, that's the objective. :)

Thanks guys. :). The dozer has gone way beyond my expectations for a first time toy RC upgrade. I've got it all buttoned up and ready for testing in the yard tomorrow with the new weight and undercarriage installed.:bounce:
With that done, and I'm sure testing will go well,, I figured it was time to clean up shop and start with a clean slate before tackling the next project. And that's where things get tricky?... What to do next?
I could use a D5 around the screener.... A D11 in the pit would help around the excavator..... I need a roller for road building.... And still need to get the crawler crane set up for the dock.
I'm leaning towards more dozer work and maybe have a trio of them by next spring?:lol:

I want to come and work for you Mario, it like a operating room!! Clean!!! Fleet looks great!! So have you got any strange calls anout the paper article? New hobbiests? I keep getting told to take my two projects up to the local cat dealer. I always figured they would look at me like a nut!! So if you were working and some weirdo showed up with these "toys" what would your fellows do? I recently had one leg of my electric meter cook and the electricitan happen to walk into garage and see the toys,,, he went nuts, took pics and even stopped back later that day with someone else to say " I told you". They said I should definately go up to cat with them.
So what about that play date next year? I could be inclined to jump border, make a small vacation out of it :).

Thanks RW. I'd give up my clean space to do the work and build the things you do in your shop.
I guess that's one of the things I bring home from work. " clean up as you work, not just when your done the work "......translation, my job is dirty but I'm a clean freak.

I have to check and confirm with the club members but the plan was first weekend of August.
May and June are the worst for bugs. No problems in August.
The one thing you might want to do at the border Mark. When we went to Indy in 2012, I went to the customs office the day before the trip and filled out some forms to declare what I was bringing with me. The trucks, trailers and radios I had. That way, when your going home you don't have to fight with them and explain you didn't purchase the stuff while on your trip! No cost, just peace of mind.
And like Mike said.
This would be a dream come true to have a few fellow excavator and dump truck owners come to play.:D. With multiple diggers and dumps, we could keep the screener plant working full bore! :bounce:

its official, come next spring my RC park will be larger. With my old Impala sold I can take down the 20X12 tarp garage in the back left corner of property.:D
I've been racking my brain trying to decide what to do with the new space. For the longest time I've wanted to get a few yards of dirt and create an elevated area for the construction equipment.
Problem is, many of my RC friends have highway trucks and not equipment so I've been trying to think of another area that the highway trucks can have a task or haul location for cargo. I was chatting with Bigford the other day when my inspiration came to me:)
I live in a steel town. The new area will be a steel plant with a loading dock for coils and plate! Im not the most artistic when it comes to making nice looking scale buildings but I feel pretty confident I can make a rusty, rundown looking steel plant with tanks, towers and a blast furnace. ( might have a small fire pit inside to burn leaves in and have smoke out the stack? :D )
Anyway, that's the plan. Time to go through the scrap bin at work again with a new perspective.

and a crane of some sort wouldn't look out of place.
how about a few conveyors delivering coal to a furnace , with a water collection device on top to boil water.
playing with RC trucks and making a coffee at the same time!

I just so happen to have a good supply of ground rubber that can pass as a coal pile and a bruder conveyor looking for something to do! Coffee making sounds good but I think the blast furnace building might hide a beer cooler:);)

I'm going to try and refurbish the undercarriage. Rollers are getting pretty loose and wheels need new bushings. She got well used and abused this summer. The Riverlot sand soil is great when wet/damp but hard when dry. And it's riddled with roots. That sandy silt is like running in liquid sandpaper. But if it's getting hauled to Canada it will be 100% I cringe at the idea of ever having to make new tracks!!!!!

3758KM from my house to Inuvik NWT or 3837KM to Mario's house.
Trip to Inuvik-
Pros- Great trip with my wife. Hunting, fishing, great scenery and no people to speak of. Driving through Northern BC and YT is my favorite place next to home. Been wanting to go back since the last time in 13.
Cons- Bugs if we go again in August, hunting for birds is closed, been there before(Inuvik) and although we loved the journey the final destination was less than desirable. Unless of course you enjoy drug addicts giving you the stink eye while you order pizza at North Mart.
Trip to Mario's
Pros- Never traveled across Canada, never met Mario or anyone else I'm friends with on here. A big group of guys to BS and play with would be a blast.
Cons- Too many cities to drive through, it's a long ways to travel with the toys, never met Mario or anyone else I'm friends with on here...

Bahahaha! August can be a hot one so we definitely need umbrella girls. My wife isn't very tall so it's not a job for her. Definitely need to contract that out. Mario's new found fame and media connections should be able to acquire all that we need.
Beverage sponsor(Crown Royal, Molson gotta keep it Canadian) = refreshments and girls

Caterpillar = "gas money" for the trip(half in $2 coins so we can play the slots) free shirts and hats

I'm not trying to build an exact replica of the steel plant but just going for a big factory kind of set up using abstract items. No idea what I'm looking for until I see it. Suddenly, a muffler from a 980 loader seems like something I could work with and a precleaner from the same machine.
Just raw materials to start with for now.... Who knows, worst case scenario I haul it back to the scrap bin.
Factories are big so, need some big stuff.

It's been a while since I've crossed the Canadian border. When I lived in Vermont we frequented Montreal quite a bit, just a drivers license in and out. And over the years of traveling out of country I have to say our customs are a joke. It is far more timing and proper paperwork to get into other countries (Caribbean, South America, Central America) than to pass back into the U.S. Many times arriving into Baltimore late at night customs just wave you by. But that is mostly air travel. I wonder what the desk would say when asked " any checked bags?" And I reply I have a d11, cat excavator, dumptruck as carry ons:)

Actually Tom it's the tire chains that are a little on the loose side and they make it look like the tires are low. I took care of maintenance and repairs on the loader but tire chains were maintained by mine mechanics. There is a fine balance between chains to tight which wears them out faster or too loose which causes links to break and once a few go it's like dominoes and next thing you know there's a big hole in the chains.
One tire chain weighs over 15,000 lbs and costs about 40K but they save so much in tires. I worked there for 3 yrs, not one flat or worn out tire.
I'll never forget the very first day I went down in the pit to look at my first large tire chain loader. I was walking in about 3" of super fine crushed rock dust! Anywhere these machines drive just pulverize the rock. So then they water it for dust, which then turns it into slop....ahhh, I miss those days.:D:lol:

Hey Mario what are the haul roads like up there at the worksite? Have a heavy truck coming up there for work! Lol!!!
Roads are 16" wide with plenty of room to spare but going down into the pit ain't gonna work my friend. The ramp down is only about 10" wide so this would be the first time a mining haul truck that can't go into a pit!
But, then again there's a great project to do. Dig a new ramp down just for the big beast! :bounce:
What do you plan on packing btw? Need an idea of how much iron is coming and how many projects to run. Right now I'm up to 4 different tasks of digging and hauling.
Pit run - 2 excavators loading 3 trucks that haul to screener......after your D11 rips up the roots to make digging easier.
Screening plant - 1 loader or excavator feeding screen and 2-3 trucks hauling material to road work areas.
Road work - 1 dozer and a grader or compactor.
Steel plant site - lots of grass top layer I need removed by your D11 ( once done at the pit:lol:). 2 excavators or loaders loading 3 trucks which go on what I like to call a " long haul".... Haul from the very back of property all the way, 250ft , up to the front yard ditch and drop there.
Loading docks - all kinds of room for cargo, forklifts and trucks with flatbeds to run around also.
In a perfect world, this is what I see going on all at the same time.:bounce:

Don't take them off yet Mark. Silly me, way back when I layed the shingles out I never paid attention to direction of flow. The problems my friend Chris had with his Texas bumper is when he came to a spot where the shingles were laid under- over instead of over under:confused::rolleyes:.... If you know what I mean?
As long as you stay on the right side of the road, you'll be ok.......hmmm that's going to be a problem eh?

Here's the latest addition to the fleet. Nothing fancy, cheap n easy to do and works good. Not proper scale but it's all about function.
This toy tower crane will work perfectly at the steel plant area I want to create. Going to make a C hook for it so I can load steel coils onto flatdecks. Also want to make a set of forks that can be used to load steel plates.
Not sure what I'm making the coils out of. The plates probably foam board or beach wood planks painted to look like plates.Ultimate goal is to have a hands free way of loading and unloading stuff.
Slip clutches have been shoe gooed for a little more power and running higher voltage.
Anyway, video of test lift and pics

Enough room under the base for all the escs and Rx. The battery fits perfectly in one of the legs. No trimming of any plastic required in entire project.

Started working on making a scale size shop for the backyard. I was going to paint it but I might use this stuff instead? Not sure what the proper name for it is. It's the stuff they wrap a house with before the siding goes on. One side is white but this backside is pretty cool looking. It has texture to it and almost looks like a concrete swirl thing?....... Can you tell how much I hate painting?
Lots to do yet, here's some mock up pics and the stuff I'm talking about.

Thanks guys, I just used the drill for demo purpose. Once the garage is assembled I'm just going to drill a hole in the side wall so I can use a screwdriver to roll the door up. Or maybe a little hand crank.
To close just have to pull it down by hand. The main reason for the doors is to try and keep leaves, squirrels and anything else out of the garage when not in use.
I could easily get carried away and install a servo to run the door with switches to activate when you pull up but I keep reminding myself to keep things simple and full time outdoor friendly:cop:........ Manual operation is fine with me.:)

Yes, it's the Canadian in all of us:D... I think that's a good plan. Mario should know a few lakes and ponds where they hangout. Ontario in August should be nice and warm. I'm sure they will all be near shore trying to keep cool....
OK, now I'm going back to the garage too...

Do you know how long it has been since I actually used the phrase " trap line "?
Sure, I think I'm 26 but body says pushing 50 so I didn't shoot nothing down, it just ain't gonna happen.
And yes , Canadians don't worship cows and cover our women. We worship beaver and like our women as uncovered as the weather will allow.:D
I hate green and not sure about Luigi yet....seems a little desperate idea for a name still. There's gotta be something better...

I think so Neil. I just can't bring myself to naming my nice shop Luigi's but the local snack bar is perfect. Ok, the shop name search continues.
Here's another good one, I could call it " the loose nut ":lol:
