Hi guys, I've been quiet for some time, but I finally had time to start a thread for my new project, Volvo A40F.
Here's the real thing:
http://i327.photobucket.com/albums/k471/Hemi1966/Volvo%20A40F/volvo_a40f_3_zpsf5e50133.jpg (http://s327.photobucket.com/user/Hemi1966/media/Volvo%20A40F/volvo_a40f_3_zpsf5e50133.jpg.html)

I will do the axles first and the idea is to use normal axles and add a planetary gear to the hubs:
http://i327.photobucket.com/albums/k471/Hemi1966/Volvo%20A40F/IMG_0509_zps6d275e09.jpg (http://s327.photobucket.com/user/Hemi1966/media/Volvo%20A40F/IMG_0509_zps6d275e09.jpg.html)
http://i327.photobucket.com/albums/k471/Hemi1966/Volvo%20A40F/IMG_0508_zpsc7844202.jpg (http://s327.photobucket.com/user/Hemi1966/media/Volvo%20A40F/IMG_0508_zpsc7844202.jpg.html)

The axles need to be widen and the drive shaft outer ends should be different to run the planetary gears.
So the first thing is to make a new longer drive shafts. Here are the originals:

Those reduction hubs are crafty! I've just spent quite a while designing my axles for my 966 build - I've gone inboard with the planetary reduction similar to wedico but I must say, these units do look the business. I'll be watching this with a keen interest.

I decided to start with the axles to see if it's possible to add those planetary gears to these axles.
The width I'm aiming is 192 mm hub to hub.

It needs several parts to attached the planetaries to axles. Also the bolt pattern on planetaries don't match with the rims I'm using, so I had to make a new hubs over them.

Here are the parts for one side:

Wow that looks awesome Ari! We are all glad to see you back in the game.

Where did you buy the axles from? I am looking for a set with the raised(offset) input/output shaft like I built for my Kenworth. I have seen pictures of an axle that I believe was made by Rigidrc online that had this but can't find any for sale. I may have to build my own again or use something like you are using. I can't afford to buy the $400 Euro a piece German axles!

Wow, another winner in process! I really like the use of planetaries in the hubs. Very realistic plus its takes a lot of stress off the differential and driveline pieces. Workmanship is always the best and I enjoy seeing it come together - even if you had to thread over 200 holes just on the axle pieces!

Here's a more detailed story of how to attach the planetary gear to these RigidRc axles.

First I chance the drive shafts for longer ones that I made:
http://i327.photobucket.com/albums/k471/Hemi1966/Volvo%20A40F/IMG_0564_zps021cc7e5.jpg (http://s327.photobucket.com/user/Hemi1966/media/Volvo%20A40F/IMG_0564_zps021cc7e5.jpg.html)

After that I install the new axle housing ends, those are tight fit over housing and kept in place with two M2 screws:
http://i327.photobucket.com/albums/k471/Hemi1966/Volvo%20A40F/IMG_0565_zps049428fd.jpg (http://s327.photobucket.com/user/Hemi1966/media/Volvo%20A40F/IMG_0565_zps049428fd.jpg.html)

http://i327.photobucket.com/albums/k471/Hemi1966/Volvo%20A40F/IMG_0566_zpsc7025313.jpg (http://s327.photobucket.com/user/Hemi1966/media/Volvo%20A40F/IMG_0566_zpsc7025313.jpg.html)

Then it was time to install the planetary gear to the adapter plate with 4 M2 screws:
http://i327.photobucket.com/albums/k471/Hemi1966/Volvo%20A40F/IMG_0571_zps18723f66.jpg (http://s327.photobucket.com/user/Hemi1966/media/Volvo%20A40F/IMG_0571_zps18723f66.jpg.html)

Then the planetary assembly will attach to the axle housing ends with 15 M2 screws
http://i327.photobucket.com/albums/k471/Hemi1966/Volvo%20A40F/IMG_0572_zps5d48199d.jpg (http://s327.photobucket.com/user/Hemi1966/media/Volvo%20A40F/IMG_0572_zps5d48199d.jpg.html)

There are rims that attach straight to the planetary gears, but the one I'm using are bigger, so I had to make new hubs over them.
http://i327.photobucket.com/albums/k471/Hemi1966/Volvo%20A40F/IMG_0577_zpsd1d95796.jpg (http://s327.photobucket.com/user/Hemi1966/media/Volvo%20A40F/IMG_0577_zpsd1d95796.jpg.html)

And finally the the hub cap in place.
http://i327.photobucket.com/albums/k471/Hemi1966/Volvo%20A40F/IMG_0578_zps105c7c7d.jpg (http://s327.photobucket.com/user/Hemi1966/media/Volvo%20A40F/IMG_0578_zps105c7c7d.jpg.html)

The Rigidrc axle are pretty nice and strong, but I strongly advise to put them in pieces before use.
The four screws that hold the differential housing together were more or less loose in all my axles. Put some thread lock there and they will keep tight.

Beautiful truck so far!! Applause!

Using that new axle should make the truck much more durable. Since the shaft passes through the differential of the middle axle the current axle has to withstand the load of both axles.. The axle with the bypass (provided it actually is a bypass) distributes the load equally onto both axles. Should be much better for the drive train..

Cheers

I'm still struggling when I try to weld thin plate to some thicker part, I can't get the thicker part hot enough before thin one melts away:mad:

Have you considered something like muggyweld for the Un tig-able stuff???

I test fitted the bogie to the frame. I don't have the new middle axle yet to see if the drive shaft have enough room:confused:
I think I start to make the a-frames front end attachment next. I going to use a ball joint there so that the bogie and axles can move freely.

Hello Ari,

I should have expected this. Have been away from the forum for just some months and here is an almost half-finished (well, ok, some 20% maybe) ADT from you. Awesome as always!!! Excellent choice of model IMHO. Would build one myself if I wasn't too busy already. So that´s why I ask you where you managed to get the drawings I see in the background in some pictures? Seems to be from the spare parts catalogue.

Will follow this amazing build closely.

On the front axle and gearbox...
- flip the axle over so the input is at the front - may still have a problem with getting the drive to the rear though (not to mention if it goes backward).
- run the drop box in the rear, requires two drive shafts across the articulation joint.
not very scale options... but if you get pushed...

I am seriously jealous of the work completed to date... wish I had the skills, tools and time to do it. :-)

Cheers,

How long did that program take to mill the above steps? Are you manually spraying coolant? I ask as I'm seriously considering adapting my mill to cnc.

And this is a really detailed, build. It looks killer!!! I've been wanting to build a larger dumper like this, but a few other projects first to gain some more knowledge. I'm eager to see what you figure out with the trying to stay scale on the driveline. You are very talented!!

It took about half an hour, I took 0.2 mm side steps with 6 mm ball end mill.
I'm using mist coolant and I love it. It blows the chips away and the air cools down the tool and it uses very little cooling oil that doesn't mess up your machine.

Hello Hemi1966

His works are really leaving us with dropped jaw, everything you do is a tremendous perfection.

This is a CNC milling machine?

Thank you,

Very fun doing these type of parts. Too bad you don't have a indexing head so you can rotate the part vertically or horizontally without disturbing the setup in the three jaw then turn it 0-90deg.
Here is an example. I don't have a vertical shot.

I do have a indexing head, but I'm worried that as I must machine the back side of the part also, I have to clamp the part long way out of the chuck and it may not be very solid:(

Hi guys:)
It's been quiet with the A40 as I've been making some parts for my friend for several weeks now, but now I got some time for this too.

I started to make the drop box. I was originally thinking that I make it with two larger gears, but I soon noticed that there's not enough room between the steering cylinders. So I have to use three smaller gears to make it fit.

Those are made with keyway broach. The set I got can you do 2 and 3mm keyways in to 6,8 and 10mm holes.
It's not that expensive: https://www.wabeco-remscheid.de/keilnut-raeumnadeln-hss.html

You also need some kind of arbor press to push the tool through the gear.

I got the dropbox attached to the frame and also got the 3-speed gearbox mounted. The gearbox is made by Veroma modellbau.
I also made a short video of the drivetrain running:

WOW!!! every square inch of this screams masterpiece. If you don't mine I have a few questions, How did you attach the rubber bumpers for the rear suspension to the aluminum? How are you cutting the thin sheet metal? with your mill?

Again you are an amazing machinist. Skilled craftsman are becoming few and far between as the years go on Seeing this enforces the fact I plan to make my son learn a hands on trade as well as a college degree. I believe there will be a day when a college educated man will come 2nd to a well trained tradesman.

Those are made with keyway broach. The set I got can you do 2 and 3mm keyways in to 6,8 and 10mm holes.
It's not that expensive: https://www.wabeco-remscheid.de/keilnut-raeumnadeln-hss.html

You also need some kind of arbor press to push the tool through the gear.

http://i327.photobucket.com/albums/k471/Hemi1966/Volvo%20A40F/IMG_1428_zps0zacvtin.jpg (http://s327.photobucket.com/user/Hemi1966/media/Volvo%20A40F/IMG_1428_zps0zacvtin.jpg.html)

If you have a lathe can also make channels for braces, I do not believe it was possible, but I ended up witnessing with my own eyes the operator making the key a pulley / shaft

Just make a tool in the channel width and entering decimal measures to the channel.

Note:. Power off.

If I remember correct I have made keyways with lathe at school many years ago.
I do have a lathe, but those keys I use are only 2mm thick and I'm not sure how well a self made high speed steel tool might last on that.
But anyway with bigger ones it does work:)

I made the cab mounting posts and the cab bottom plate today.

Pretty soon I must decide how I'm going to make engine hood and all the curved cab parts, maybe 3D print...
I've seen some great 3D printed projects here so I know it's possible, but the problem is that I have no idea how to do the 3D modelling of the parts.
Do you 3D experts know if it's possible to 3D scan the 1:50 scale hood and resize that to 1:14, or is it too small to begin.

Here's a rough picture of the hood so you get the idea.

Big CAD packages have scale functions so theoretically it is possible. However, I would recommend paying few bucks to a CAD specialist who will model you all the necessary parts and you can print them out in whatever size you need. Then you won't lose details, can print parts separately etc.

Hemi1966
06-23-2015, 09:23 AM
Thanks Madda, that might be the way to proceed:)

I managed to make the cab side panels today, luckily the cab is basically a simple box, minus the roof:mad: so no need for 3D printing there.

Hi Ari, I would like to say that I followed all your builds and I believe you transform all your equipment in a peace of art working on metal. You should continue doing it all the way trough in my opinion. But, If you have the Idea of add some plastic parts, then http://www.fumotec-shop.de/modell-komponenten/dumper-bell-b40d/index.php has the parts for cab for sale. also you can take a look at premacon if you want. Definitely way easier, but not even close to what you have made so far.

Ari, why don't you just make it out of aluminum? You have great metal skills and a TIG so it shouldn't be impossible. At least then you are not using plastic on a model in which you have put so much effort into making from metal. Just my 2 cents. I know you can do it!

Awesome build !! I agree with Reg and Trucker Jo. Try to make the cab from metal. From your past builds, you have the skills to do it. It just takes a lot of nerve to try. You might want to go with brass or copper instead of aluminum. I wish that I would have tried to make the cab on my Studebaker US6 out of metal instead of modifying a Tamiya truck cab.

A good way is to have the hood modelled in 3D, and order it at Shapeways.com, plastic 2 mm thick.

Hi guys, finally I got time and inspiration to continue this:)
Meanwhile I've been doing one bigger construction machine project to a friend and lots of other machining jobs.

The problem with this A40 was the engine hood that turn out to be hard to make.
I was thinking 3D printing but that's not so simple either, mainly due the 3D modeling part.

So I will try to make it in aluminium and brass. First I made the frame that the sheeting will attach. This may still fail but lets try it anyway:(

I'm working with the diff lock cables. I was first thinking to put the bogie axle operating servo somewhere to the rear frame, but I can't hide it anywhere there. So it has to be in the front. I'd like to be able to lock the front and back bogie axles separately, but I'm not sure will I be able to squeeze both of the servos to the front.
I also started to paint some of the parts:) I first got Volvo CE yellow from a auto paint shop but it was not the right tone. Then I bought Volvo original colors.

Trucker47, the Everlast is good enough welder for me, but in many places you can tell it's Chinese made.

Supermario, I think the engine hood makes this more challenging than the grader was.

Rimrock, I use aluminium primer for the alu parts and I also blasted many parts with glass beads.

This dumptrucks looking awesome. Were all the chassis placards homemade or a kit? The diff lock setup looks killer.

I'm kinda suprised with the amazing work everywhere around here that nobody really seems to go full-on when it comes to prep and painting aluminum. I guess our equipment probably doesn't need it quite like the real stuff.
