Funktion of a wrecker

Hello folks,
I have a question about the function of awrecker. Today the towed vehicles are lifted by hydraulic system with a "bridge".
BUT
How did this before (earlier) made when the vehicles were lifted by crane? Did someone have a drawing, photos, etc. I have only found pictures of vehicles from the front . (I mean such a construction CLICK)
