I'm just using the rear plate to bolt the F350 transfer case to the back of the stock trans.

RC4WD offers a better option nowadays with a wee bit more reduction over the f350 case & you probably won't have to lift the trans quite as much for clearance.
http://store.rc4wd.com/T1-Disruptor-Black-Transfer-Case-2181-Gearing_p_859.html

I just drilled the stock leaf springs to bolt the TLT's directly to them... used a dremel on the axle to make a divet for the leaf spring rivet, help center the axle over the leafs before drilling the holes.

I have a bit of a hump in the middle where the water didn't penetrate deep enough, didn't want to make anymore mud at this time.

... it's been snowing or raining all week, so no hauling out. I had a little bit previously crushed dirt to dump into the wall, using the loader with the new bucket it now fills the KH 2.5 scoops! previous spade bucket was a little more 4 scoops.

This one scoop!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2013/003-1_zps2ea27640.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/protrker/media/Jan%2013/003-1_zps2ea27640.jpg.html)

And what's left of the 3rd that doesn't fit.

I have this here radiant heater, starting using Tues to dry down the moist dirt quickly and have been screening since Wed... half the pile is seperated already, with the lumps dumped behind water heater & the fines added to an already massive pile.

Gosh!!! talking about snow thru the wkend, I don't see double digits yet in the long term forecast even... my air drill is still sitting in a snowbank!!! This time last yr I started seeding on the 21st of April. Too wet & cold to do anything productive outside and running out of space to do things inside. :(

thanks for the pics Joe!!

I have both transmissions, so I guess I'm making one heck of a tranny like yours and one backwards looking one if i got enough parts left over lol. I plan to put a planetary up front and you just cant do that on a HL stock tranny.

and yeah, snowing like a bugger here today!! its half way through friggin April!!

Video? that just eats up too much of my data cap, which if I hit my cap for the month, it sends my speed back to the dark ages & makes navigating this forum even, extremely painfully slow! The videos will be few & far between till an alternative comes along. :/ Thanx for your interest though Jim. :)

Dean, the HL trans has a huge amount of reduction built into it already and there's far more choices nowadays for various torquey motors to pick from... which would make installation far less complicated than what I have done and still have the same power cap. ;)

Spring planting Buzzy! Started putting in crop a week ago, prepped all the necessary equipment the week before that. Another week should get it done, but there's rain in the forecast starting Tues... which will be a welcome sight b/c the surface dryness & dust flying as I rip the ground is getting a bit intense at times. A half inch to inch of moisture this week would be perfect for what I have seeded & to mellow the ground for the 2nd half I have to seed next.

It's summertime here man! A time to be outdoors & being productive to make lots of cash$ for activities indoors 6 months from now! :D

Thank you for your interest. :)

Hi Lou, I've been doing some tinkering in the basement since spring, but it has been raining nearly every week since late May making it difficult to get any dirt outside, which I haven't hauled not one load out this summer. Working on a conveyer system to make export yr round - so the weather, no matter wet or cold or windy, the conveyer system will be totally enclosed to keep the weather out.

The shop is coming along, in stages... June was the building, then July was the door, then spray insulation. Yesterday the cement crew was here to pack gravel, get it the area ready to pour cement next week. Then it'll be me & whoever I can talk into helping to do the interior after harvest. And finally the electrician to finalize everything... hopefully November sometime and I can start using it for what it was built for. ;)

Here's a couple of snaps of more excavation from the floor this summer, a semi circle around the outer edges, though some of it filled back in with dry fines.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2013/013_zpsc0da2dbb.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/protrker/media/Jan%2013/013_zpsc0da2dbb.jpg.html)

Right above this loader is the window opening, where a pit built into the wooden roadway will be installed & 3 various lengths conveyers will be installed. I cleared this dirt away into the hole of the previous pics so I can stand/work in this area for the conveyer installation.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2013/012_zpsf007dbc2.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/protrker/media/Jan%2013/012_zpsf007dbc2.jpg.html)

This is the corner that started the idea of my basement excavation, and seems most vulnerable with soaking up during wet summers, which the darker colored soil is rather damp, to drive on it with the trks - the tires would ball up with clay & make it dangerous driving on the steep wooden roadways. I scraped back the wet dirt surface a few times in recent wks, then with the screener on the JD850 sifted the crushed rock over it, it kinda works like floor-dry, but maybe not as well.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2013/008_zpsc110a931.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/protrker/media/Jan%2013/008_zpsc110a931.jpg.html)

I found this lil beasty last Spring just before seeding, it arrived in late May. The opening is 2x2 inch, an inch or so rocks break to dust pretty well within it... they have bigger laboratory crushers available, like 6x4 would be sufficient for what I would want, but too big to put in the basement. This lil crusher will be ideal for crushing small rock & brusselsprout size lumps into finer material to go through the conveyer system to outside. Bigger stuff will just have to be trked out separately on occasion when the weather is agreeable.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2013/007_zps624bb8c3.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/protrker/media/Jan%2013/007_zps624bb8c3.jpg.html)

Got a big pile of wet lumps drying out under the west porch, things to do during the winter, then start digging again to fill 'er back up.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2013/006_zpse731fbdb.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/protrker/media/Jan%2013/006_zpse731fbdb.jpg.html)

Brought the JD850 upstairs a week ago, the pump needs some attn.. whether it's the bearing on the pump gone out again or the cog belt needs replacing or both.... I've got nowhere to tear this machine down right now, the workroom in my house is too full of everything! no benchtop space, and no where to put that stuff to make room... it seems. I'm looking forward to get that shop done and back to building, rebuilding, improving models once again soon.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2013/005_zpsf1d39f1f.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/protrker/media/Jan%2013/005_zpsf1d39f1f.jpg.html)

Anyways, it's finally a bit breezy this afternoon, the high humidity of the last couple wks seems to have finally subsided, gonna try another moisture test on my hard wht right now to see if it's ready yet, then maybe combine through wkend by myself... I told the hiredhand last Wed to not come back till Monday and maybe then we can finally get harvest underway.

Thanx for your interest, talk to ya in a month or so. :)

Brrrr it's cold outside, a high of -3  and I've already have my 'change of seasons cold' :( good reason to stay inside & get busy with the hobby again. :)

Last week I fixed my JD850, DESTROYED the cog belt, worn smooth & the motor pulley too, the bottom pulley has some serious wear as well. Good to have spare parts on hand, it's running order again & back in the quarry. Used the 850 a few hrs over the wkend, 1st time since mid Aug, gotta be a new record for me - no rc for 2,5 months! :D

The loader needed a little attn., the bolts that hold the cyl mount fell out, relatively quick simple repair... just the kind that I like! :D

And here's one of about of six conveyers nearly completed, I got this far just before harvest. I have the rollers turned for two more much longer conveyers. This one is just over 12inches, it'll be the pit conveyer. I sourced the belt from a front garden tractor tube, width of cut is 65mm.

People complain how expensive the RC heavy plant is to have, the amount of enjoyment I get from mine makes them not expensive at all. :D

Probably be a 15rpm spur gear motor, bevel gear coupling.

Not really a weak point Ed, that's what a couple 100hrs @ 30 bar digging hard ground does to belts & pulleys. :D

Yes I did have a lot of irons in the fire this summer and not much time or ambition for the hobby Tom, I didn't even haul not one load of dirt outside. I have to redo all the hyd plumbing & electronics within the dozer... such a large model, I didn't want to do it in the house. I'm looking forward to my new workshop to tackle such projects. ;)

Glad you are back at it, I know there are lot of lurkers like myself that have been going through basement withdrawals. I hope the harvest was a fruitful one for you. I cant wait to see what you have in store for us with the conveyor and the new workshop. It looks like the new shop is close enough to the house that a nice little tunnel could be built to connect the two. May only take a couple of years of excavating to get it done. :D

Harvest this yr was a mixed bag of nuts, income will be lower b/c of lower prices & lower quality, but still in the Black. By the end of next week I'll have half of it off the farm already, which is huge improvement over last yr. :)

Way ahead of you there! ...in thought anyway, I've been eyeballing that idea since June. Right behind the water heater, make a right turn 10* grade up to the NE corner of the shed... probably call Goodon so I can get matching materials. That'd be a good job for the D9 & pan to dig out. :D

There is a project for you!! But it would just drill itself out of sight very quickly! :-)

I lmao when I read that. :D :D :D :p

I was thinking I'd tunnel under the house cement foundation & keep a 10* grade to get back to ground level so I could drive the equipment out under it's own power, it's all getting so freaking heavy nowadays to pack up the narrow stairwell. Add a lean-to structure to the east side of shed. The added interior space would also be a good spot to add a hotub. :)

Shawn mentioned last Spring that was he able to buy directly from McMaster, they sure do have a lot of nifty goodies for our hobby which will be a snap to get now. I spoke to them once upon a time ago and their response was b/c of homeland security issues... go figure?

I've crushed about a 5ga pail full of rocks with it Lou, but with careful hand selection feeding them in b/c of it's small opening (less than 1,5inch material), and some rocks just wouldn't break. Keeping the jaw box full worked infinitely better than one rock at a time.

You should find a way to run the rocks through the crusher on a conveyor, or at lest so you can fill it with the wheel loader and the conveyor running to a hopper.

Awesome videos by the way i'm glad i found your youtube Chanel when you where articled on Hack A Day. :D

I guess I forgot to answer that question when Neil asked it earlier (sorry Neil), probably would be best to have a feeder conveyer/hopper to keep a steady stream in the jaw crusher FullMetalFab. Make another short conveyer like on the previous page & probably wire the conveyer motor to a variable rate device to vary flow depending on material size at the time.

I saw that posting on Hack a Day... the concept of having a radio controlled hobby seems to fly over the heads of many... computer hackers & their Arduino controllers yadda yadda :D

Here's the last vid for the month showing the tight quarters the JD850 is currently working in. Probably close to half the pile gone already in a couple of weeks, the 850 makes short fun at just about everything.

I started the upload before bed last night, takes several hrs for a couple of vids... been gone since early morning hauling grain... you guys spoiled my thunder. :( :p

Like I've already mentioned, last summer's rain every week from spring thaw to fall freezing, I didn't get any dirt hauled out & I am now out of space to do any new digging... everything has pretty much come to a halt with no free space to pile! So I'll pail this small pile up the stairs & out the door & soon start doing some new digging.

This dirt I'm loading into the pails is powder ash dry, to dump the dirt in at the top of pail creates a mushroom cloud of dust to rise above *cough cough*

Reaching down to the bottom to gently place the dirt to minimalize dust has created an interesting challenge to not move the 20L pail with each bucketful. I have less than half inch clearance at the four corners of the excavator bucket. This is pails #14 & 15 and I haven't had a flawless run yet. :D

Probably have another 10 pails to practice with to clean this up and then dig out this small area that is close to a cu/yd of material.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAYFVHmXgXI

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlBiEyULwb8

I haven't done anything with the pup yet, been tinkering with other projects. The GL screwdrive dump has been working great, finished backfilling the wall a few weeks ago.

Sorry about beating you to the punch line man, the videos you uploaded last night really gave me a good look at how big the deer really is.

Are you not worried about all the dirt getting in to the screw drive on those dump units  All the fin dust would acted like sand paper on them even if you cover them in grease of thick oil.

Lil Giants
01-29-2014, 10:17 PM
The screw is tucked up under the box & sheltered well... there's no lube on the screw to attract dirt to it.

I was kidding about the thunder, thanx for your interest.

Question Joe,

The rear rims and tires you have on your Green GL pictured above? Do you have the same tires but differnt rims on the front axle? You may have already posted this info, but it would take days to read this whole thread to find it... lol
Rear Tires - are from what model or who makes them. Rims also? Have to do any mods to make them fit?
Front Tires / rims ?

Thanks,
John

John, same tires all around, and I think they originated from the Pajero jeep kit. The front rims come from the Hummer and the rears don't I know what they're from. The inner rims are a bit narrower than the outers & are bolted together. The hollow tires are a very hard rubber & they grip really well, especially with each one packed solid with air rifle BB's, I think it's more than a lbs per tire, adds a lot of weight to the trk. The trk gets around great when it's empty.

I tried on Tower Hobbies last yr to find more of these tires, but they didn't have them... might be discontinued. But here's the narrow & wide rims
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXGL03&P=7
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXGL04&P=7

Wild Willy put me onto to this combo a decade ago and has a write up about them on his website.
http://www.customrcmodels.com/id306.htm

These tires are quite wide dualed up; if you were eyeballing them for your dump trk, they'll stick out 25mm each side (225mm vs 175mm stock). The box I got from Reg is 230mm width.

Cheers Mark. :) When I get my garage/workshop done hopefully by summer, next winter my hobby should be in full swing again with regular updates of new projects & new activities.

JohnStilwell
01-30-2014, 05:30 PM
Thanks Joe,

Yes, I was eyeballing them for my Wife's dump truck, but 25mm is too much sticking out, I don't think that would look too good. Maybe a future Mack build...

Like your JD Excat? That thing is huge, watched your video loading the 5 gal buckets
and you can barely fit the hoe bucket in there.

Opinion: I'm trying to decide between two different pieces of equipment:
1. The Fumotec PC490. Same builder / designer I believe as your JD, right. Seems like a nice kit, just not sure on the power and noise of the hydro system, hate it when they have that loud high pitch whine.

2. The Carson Track loader. They are supposed to come out with a 4in1 bucket for it that would make loading 'normal side height' dump trucks much easier since the loader doesn't have the bucket height needed to load a taller truck correctly / fully.

John

Luv my JD! I wish I would have started my basement project with it.... The GP bucket is 50% greater width that I made, but same depth as stock.

I would take the excavator, I just enjoy running that particular type of model equip more than anything else. The mic on the camera amplifies the sound much more than it really is, you're probably going to be outside 90% of the time, right? You'll hardly hear it.

The 490's track drives & hyds are virtually the same as the JD, but its overall size is 20% smaller & half the weight. Don't tell anybody, I got one coming, it'll probably ship sometime in the next week, but I won't be starting on it till next winter.

T9, hundreds!

Patrick, I use a DX18 with the JD, it has rotary sliders on each side of the radio, left is steering & right is for/rev. The instructions are pretty easy to follow for mixing, master = valves, slave = pump, get your +/-'s in the right order & you're done. I'll use this radio for all previous & future hoes.
left up/dn = boom
left l/r = swing
rht up/dn = stick
rht l/r = bucket
3pos for pump - dn is off, middle is 30%, up is 90% (if I remember correctly)
2pos for coupler
2pos connected to esc for screener
...I'd have to add the X-Plus module to the rx for the other 9chs, if I wanted to add anything more.

No worries John, Fumotec will make you one too, get at 'er! Thank goodness I paid for mine last Sept, with the euro-cdn exchange today it'd 13% more!

I got 5 valves with this 490, so I might consider a thumb, but I've never had a use for one before. Fumotec figured some time this yr he'd come with some attachments, though he didn't say what exactly.

I got the loose dirt cleaned up & then some more ground soaked up to start digging again. I think I left my garden hose outside, so I came up with another means of slow dripping water, which is with these plastic bowls that I drilled one 1,5mm hole in the bottom & it's working great!

The rock was 28lbs (I finally got a scale) and while I was at it I weighed the JD850 too, it was right on 80lbs, full of fuel. :D

A crane Jim? I don't think I hurt the rock (or track hoe) by dragging it. :D Would any of Kerst's cranes be able to lift 30lbs? The ground is crazy unlevel down there and it'd be quite the harness you'd have to rig up too. It'd take all day to swing that boulder outta there, eh?! :D

Preferably I'm hoping for drought this yr, worldwide... prices are getting scary low in recent months, it seems much of the world had record yields last yr... although a lot of my crop ended up in the feed market, quality suffered b/c all the nutrients went into the excessively hi yield.

I dug down about 10 inches, ground started getting too hard. Move all the loose wet dirt back into freshly dug hole, then slide down a small hill to start digging at the lower level.

Lil Giants

Nope, the bucket was still in the air. I've watched from 1:46 to 1:50 many times trying to figure out what it was that kept it from going over .... I think it was nothing but dumb luck!

What a wreck if it had gone over... that top is fiberglass and the added accessories - dual screen, air cleaners & exhaust tip are cast in resin, they would have shattered! Also, that vertical spin motor drive, could have done serious damage to that component too.

Stupid Stupid Stupid!!!

That undercarriage is all 5mm steel and is more than half the weight of the entire model.

I've had this happen a few of times in my cat 307 . What happens , is if the surface is uneven under the tracks 1 side will be in the air . As you swing to the side in the air it'll give a sharp jolt as seen in the vid . Watch the track frame as you swing closely , it took me a few times to see it . It raises your hair a lil when it happens .

I think you're onto something there Stevie ;)... though it wasn't a high spot in the track, I purposely spun the tracks @0:45 to get rid of any stones or lumps so the tracks were flat footed & it wouldn't teeter. It was @1:25 when I turned to the left a bit - raising the right track an inch or so up the slope that caused it to slide a bit during the swing... had I turned right it may not have move. Although it's still fluke it didn't tip right over.

Looking back to post #442, almost two yrs to the day since I last repaired this bucket cyl... I wonder why it won't hold? It started to drip a few days ago, couldn't tell for sure where exactly. This afternoon it was pouring out the crack!

The ol' Mammoth works pretty good as a workbench. :D

If it weren't for the leak, I probably would have been taken it apart soon anyway b/c the bolt that holds the piston to the rod was a few threads loose. :p

I believe I did (blue) locktite it Markus... although upon assembly I discovered the internal threads needed a tap run through it & the 5mm bolt had to be replaced. I suppose the 35bar is not only pushing the limits of the hose & soldered joints, but the threaded parts too. Time to dial it back to 30 or so.

It's ModelMaster's black chrome, matches up well with the matt black JD paint I used. It brushes on streak free. ;)

Deja Vu FB! I've seen that before, but don't remember how I got there. :D Certainly some very creative things have been done by man over the centuries... all it takes is a little time & some determination to make it happen. ;)

I thought I had it set at 30bar Kalle, but I noticed here lately that the gauge is reading 35bar. Keeping it planted is all about finesse. ;)

When I 1st started learning with the rc excavator more than a decade ago, an ol' pro come to see my hobby & within a minute of me showing him the model's ability, he said "you can quickly tell who's good & who's not by how much the tracks move up & down while they're digging".... that's something I took to heart from then on.

In the vids of your's I see, you spend a lot of time sitting on rocks... where as I am flat footed on clay & the tracks will grip much better. ;)

I tried to work at the interior of my workshop the last couple wks of warmer weather, but my lower back just won't let me do that kind of heavy work anymore, so I got builder crew to do it this week, 3 guys did it inside of 2 days.

front entry – room is 24 x 30 sq feet. I have a 12’ width roll up door directly left of picture. I do my cutting, grinding, welding in this room.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2014/001_zps2c97dcfa.jpg

middle room – 18 x 30 sq feet. There will be a semi circle of sit down workbenches to the left of pic, going around from one door to the other door on other side of room. To the right of pic will be where my manual lathe & mill sits. The room has a closed in roof so it can be heated warmer than rest of building, I can work in a T shirt. Lots of room for new projects & old projects & space to make quick repairs to get equip back in the field asap.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2014/002_zps18365482.jpg

back room – 18 x 30 sq feet. Dirt floor, a place to mess around & test out new equip, painting parts, ect. The 850 will come out here after seeding to move piles of dirt around wall edges to seal up building from outside weather.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2014/003_zpsc01c2512.jpg

back room – I will cut a door opening here to access lean-to structure. Lean-to will be 13 x 40 area, which will give me access to my house via a tunnel.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2014/004_zps79cddf3c.jpg

this pic shows where the lean-to structure to be built this summer, but 1st I need to pour concrete slab in corner of house, northward 15 feet (camera currently pointing south), then lean-to will be placed one foot over north edge of concrete. Then the Lil Giants Constr Co will dig a 15’ x 4’ x 7’ tunnel under the concrete slab over the next few yrs. Approx 15.5 cu yds + additional yardage for elevated ramp to rise to ground level at approx. 12° incline.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2014/005_zps15702739.jpg

In a wk or 2, hopefully it's above 10C, I primer & paint the walls a bright white. Then the electrician will do his thing while I'm planting my crops in May... and sometime this summer I set up shop & start using it! Boy oh Boy do I have a lot of ideas & projects that have stacked up over the last couple of yrs. :D

And to be clear about the crazy Canadian thing,,, I'm jealous , and wish I had found the rc construction hobby earlier in life as it's always been something that my inner child has desired. As I'm building the d11 I'm keeping an eye out for a haul rig, excavator and so on. And it's appreciated that you share your trial and errors. Thanx Dean, getting closer all the time... :)

And thanx again Cooper... I started this community in 2001 on Yahoo Groups forums, then I moved it to Garden Trucking in summer of 2005, then we started again with FreddyGearDrive with this current forum in Fall of 2010... so we've been around for a long time... although it's really just in the last 4 or 5 yrs that the RC heavy commercial hobby has exploded on this continent with organized exhibitions & club get togethers; both private & commercial local manufacturers of parts & kits... and globally too , for that matter with greater ease for the individual to do international commerce to build whatever he/she wants.... what a black hole it was back in 1996 for me with no internet & just a few pics & script I saw in some plastic model truck magazine from NY, USA that did a feature on Wedico rc trk kits. :D

I don't suppose I'll ever outrun that "Crazy Canuck Basement Digger" namesake... I was a little disappointed with the original story line that started it all in 2012, but at least like-minded ppl such as yourself saw it & found your way here to join us to share & contribute with your own talents of ingenuity & discipline to make the hobby that much greater for everyone as well.

You're Welcome or I'm sorry... take your pick Michael. :p :D

I got this Fumotec B4206 4x4 kit Feb 2012... it's come in handy to rob parts from it to fix my JD850, as well as upgrade other models too with some beefy parts. But I replaced everything taken from it with the box full of goodies I got from Fumotec earlier this week. :D

With everything painted and ready to go together, I started assembly last night and not long I was scratching my head thinking WT?, why won't this fit together.

An email to Frank & a few hrs later with him telling me that the red brushless motors have to be milled to fit... so, I masking taped the bell openings & used my dremel with a grinding disc to shave 2mm off each motor. ;)

Being that I got this kit 2yrs ago, Frank (Fumotec) has since upgraded these tiny red out runner brushless motors with special order shorter ones blue colors made specifically for his kits (B4206 tractor, WA 500 loader & B50/45 ADT).

Nice & big workshop you have joe-so you are building a tunnel. This should be a few years work. By looking at the tunnel size I am assuming that it is 15' from your house and will be 7' tall and 4' wide. Is this correct? Do you have a dig plan that you could share? I didn't think an excavator could dig on a vertical wall. Is there another machine in the plan? Also will you shore up the walls and ceiling with wood, metal, etc.? Will be watching ....

grumpygrady
03-24-2014, 08:27 PM
before you start your tunnel have you thought about a concrete slab over it on top of it from garage to the house
to prevent a collapse from weight of snow or animals or atvs etc

I know it some times happens like when I was a kid and dug tunnels in the side of ditches in NMex , a friend parked his bike on top of our fort and the roof came down on the three of us that were inside thank goodness we had room for the dirt and us and everyone got out ok but we never thought about it coming down lol

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2014/005_zps15702739.jpg

You see how the west porch is narrower than the main part of the house? ...that's where I intend to pour a 15 x 15 foot slab of concrete, plus the narrow area to the right between the shop & house will be concrete too to carry rainfall away.

The camera is pointing south. The tunnel will be northward of west porch, starting in the middle of porch. Tunnel depth will be 7' under concrete and then elevate at 12 degree incline to ground level.

I intend to drill 6" diameter holes 2' from main house foundation, two rows in parallel, spaced 4' apart north of porch. Then I'll insert 4" x 4" x 10' PWS posts in the holes to help support the cement & give me something to screw PWS sheet to to crib the vertical walls. I'll place 6" square 1/2" plate steel on top of posts, plus lots of rebar in the concrete, plus drill holes into house foundation to insert rebar... that should be one solid mass, with 80% of concrete resting on undisturbed ground. ;)

I think the reach of the JD850 is about 30" vertical, so the tunnel will be that height till I get all the way across. Then cut the floor down another +4'.

Before I pour cement slab, I'll lay three 1" plastic pipe the length of tunnel & drill 1/4" holes every 12" for the length of each pipe, so I can add water here to soften up the ground to dig it out... for every hole I reach while digging inward, just tape it off so I can keep adding water to keep the ground moist for easier digging. ;)

Once the concrete work is completed & cured, then the lean to structure will be put up. Then get the spray insulation guy to do his thing and lastly any electrical necessary... with a little luck, it should all be done before next winter. :)

Where I'm standing with the camera (north east corner of shop), I intend to put a hot tub in this corner! It'll be out of the way & out of the elements... and I hope it's the cure to my lower back pain that has been getting worse & worse the last 2yrs.

This something new to me... using these brushless motors, one on each wheel; each motor has to have it's own esc too to power it.

I messed around all day yesterday figuring out the programming sequence & getting perfect neutral so both sides start/stop equally... now to do the other axle & hope I can match it to this one.

Robbe has a esc programmer, though I didn't know of it till I started this part of the build... I'll probably get one b/c I have more of these types of esc's to program in the future. ;)

How wide are those axles from flange to flange ? Does the brushless motor reduce length on the whole gearmotor ? I'm thinking going that route on the pans to gain much needed space on the pans . I'm really impressed the way the 4 gearmotors work on my compactor .

Lil Giants
03-30-2014, 04:02 PM
Roughly 8,5 inches.

The Stahl axle is quite a bit narrower, but the weight of the model is carried by that gearhead output shaft. That's where Fumotec's axle is different, the weight is carried by the axle itself.

Nice work getting all of that to fit, and thanks for all the pictures.
Are those quick disconnects? Are they the ones from SMC? I have been doing research but am still lost on what I need to buy. Is the side that connects to the hose a compression fitting? Or does it have an outer shell that you tighten down over the nipple to keep the hose securely attached?

Avel, they are quick disconnects, though I don't know what brand specifically. I told Frank (Fumotec) that I wanted some & this is what he sent. The fitting that connects the hose, a screw on compression.

"machine builder extraordinaire !!!" ...ahhh not really, I struggle & fumble through it & eventually get it working... but thanx for comment Bo. :)

Cheers Dean. :)

Thanx Lee. With this monster JD hoe I have now, there's not enough left here to keep it busy for much longer... so I work at it in moderation with about tenth the time per week/month than I did 5yrs ago. I should be able to drag it out another 3 yrs or so before I have to figure out a new project to do. ;)

I learned about a new electrical device today
http://www.servonaut.de/shop/product_info.php?info=p67_servonaut-mfr.html

It turns out that Frank had sent one with the 490 for slew motor control, so I was able to rob it from there to get the steering pot to work on the B4206 steering actuator... took a bit of time to figure out how to program it correctly & wire it up with no English instructions, but Frank took the time to do some translating for me.

The way I had it wired in previous pics was the steering motor connected directly to an esc, which meant I would have to be extremely careful not to hold left or right on the tx stick too long b/c there be no stopping the powerful motor & damage would happen... definitely nobody but me would ever be able to run this model having it this way!

So now with this MFR device & it programmed to servo electronic, wherever I hold the stick on the tx, the gearhead motor will turn the steering gear/lever arm to that position & stop. It works exactly like a servo.

I've never had a small servo apart before to modify for 360 rotation.... so I would assume this is the enlarged version of a regular servo. ;)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2014/001_zpsaf0a9fdd.jpg

Jumper on A, B - turn pot screw all the way right so green light blinks 4x for Servo Electronic. Pull jumper before turning off power to finish setting & it will hold there.

All the left way is 1 blink, about 11 o'clock is 2 blinks & 1 o'clock is 3 blinks. ;)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2014/002_zps55c480e1.jpg

Lead from potential meter pot is plugged into C,D,E on MFR

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2014/004_zps0425b810.jpg

Anyways, I had to gut everything out of the nose to get the steering actuator out & release the set screws on steering gear incase I had a run away on initial start-up... now I put it all back together & re-organize the electronics to put them somewhere else rather than between the moving parts of pump & steering actuator. ;)

Tomorrow I'm bringing the JD850 out here with the adt & I might change the quick connects on the 10th scale pan to pull behind the 4206... it has a monster box that's better than double the one above...I'll try filling it with the 4206, but will mostly load with it the 850 for fast turn arounds. ;)

More great videos joe-I noticed you had some heat going in the work area. That should help. That small dozer seems to do a good job. The ground looked really soft so I guess it was tricky to keep from getting stuck but it was moving the dirt well. The pan looked good too. I am assuming that the dozer is to slow pulling the pan. Traction seemed to be a problem for the wheel machine but you made it work. I guess you have a few months of work (or fun) moving all that dirt but you should have a great shop when you are finished. Nice job!!

The Bell 4206 is a cool machine. Looks like it needs some help pulling the scraper though. You should hire someone to run the dozer and give it a push from the rear. :)

FlyingBeagle

That is so cool, I would love to come run a push dozer for you, but Im not sure I could afford the gas for the daily commute to work.

Just a thought, If you are going to load the scraper with the excavator, why not pull both scrapers in tandem and split the hydraulics between the two. now that would really move some earth in a hurry.

Lil Giants
04-24-2014, 01:42 AM
Tom, the dirt was a bit too moist & being the sub soil clay that came from my basement, very sticky & compacts quickly! I dumped those two piles in there late last fall with my small Massey FEL. That dirt is soaked up from 17inches of rainfall last summer/fall. The other pile is wetter yet, I think some snow had blown in melted into it during the winter.

The problem with using the dozer to pull a pan is you have to be so careful how sharp you turn at any given time, not to roll dirt into the links & bind them up. This subsoil clay packs in like cement. Even Joe's dozer, he had trouble with rock & clay in the track links at Cabin Fever in 2012 & had to take the tracks off to clean them a couple of times.

In the Flat Topping video, a few different times dirt fell from the cut wall with the right track too close getting dirt into track tensioner & links... now I gotta take that side apart & clean it to get it functioning properly again.

The weather has been crappy again today, must have got an inch overnight cause it sure was a soggy mess to get around today... so I spent the better part of the day out in the shop hauling dirt to the outer edges, sealing off the daylight & the cold draft! Both piles have less than half the dirt they did just a few days ago. The 850, the adt, the WA500 have been busy! :D

Thanx for the photos Neil, some kool iron to drool at... lucky you to have had the experience of running them.

Nathan, we will make that video if the fellas from the east side ever make it over or I get there next Fall for the model engineering show. I don't see it possible that I could operate two models at the same time, even with I changed the throttle back to no spring center... I don't think I want to make the dozer to push full throttle, over amp the motors & burn 'em up.. or the back of the scraper sliding up the dozer blade from pushing too hard.. or... gotta have two operators to do it right without a wreck!

FB, I could certainly T each function together & make it work, but rough guess, it would be better than 18 feet of tubing & six T's, which I don't have.

I just weighed that 10th scale pan, it's 44lbs! Add a heaping load of dirt?

I just gotta change the fittings on the 10scale pan to match the 4206, maybe tomorrow I'll see if the 4206 has enough weight within itself to pull that pan loaded,.. it's a wheeled drawbar pull, so there's no drawbar weight added to the 4206.

Lil Giants
04-25-2014, 12:49 AM
So I tried to pull the 10th scale pan with the 4206 today... on the cement, no problem. But in the dirt it struggled to pull it empty! The tires on the pan are made from, I think it was delrin, it didn't want to roll in the soft ground. Loaded up, 4206 couldn't budge it... I had to push with my foot & push quite hard to get it to move.

Only the 10th scale dozer will ever pull that massive pan. :)

hvy 1ton
04-25-2014, 01:23 AM
You need one of these for the Bell. http://www.bultequipment.com/PDF/Titan-S4412B-2-Wheel-Pan.pdf

Doubles need minimum of 4 circuits and 2 sequencing valves. The sequencing valve allows the apron and ejector to run off the same circuit. Otherwise both pans will try to load at the same time.

KOOL!!! thanx for the posting the link hvy1ton, I got it bookmarked for future consideration of a project to do.

I have been pondering for some time about changing the hitch on the current pan I have to something like this, wondering how it might change the Bell's traction abilities to load the pan better and/or easier than a drawbar pull?

Having this area in the back of workshop + the lean-to when I get it built this summer is much more appealing to have company than if it were just the basement... the basement would be risky to even have 3ppl down there not to step on anything. Where I live, you would have to drive to get here b/c the closest major airport for jets is 4hrs away.

The Island boys however, one of them is a pilot & if 4 of them went together to rent a small Cessna? they could fly right to my town just nine miles away... just saying. :D

Just look for the small house on the prairie with a green roof Greg, that me! :D

This how I finished the 1st pile... I was impressed with how well that small Stahl pushed & packed, when I (205lbs) stepped on the dirt I didn't leave much of a print... of course the dirt is quite moist.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2014/001_zps74861ec4.jpg

This afternoon I went to work on the other pile flattening it out, did most of it inside of 40mins with the 850.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2014/007_zps49776e8b.jpg

I adjusted the tx stick for no spring center, but without the "ratchet arm" in place (I don't know where I put that yrs ago), I was only getting about 2/3 throttle in each direction before the last bit of spring tension interfered.

Amazing what this lil 12lbs dozer was capable of, the two machines working together, pan taking a 1/2 to 3/4 inch cut to pack a heaping load on in less than two feet!!! The dirt would pack in there so tight that the small push cyl struggled at 1st to push the load out! :D

Thanx for your kind words fellas.

This dirt is so wet! After about 30 push loads, the surface developed a nearly impenetrable crust & the track motors of the lil Stahl dozer were nearly stalling with the tracks having too good of traction, I even tried to rip it with the dozer & either didn't penetrate much or hook deep & stopped the dozer... so time to bring in the muscle to break it all up again.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGceShzHdiA

But then the pile was too narrow & I kept sliding off either side with the pan... so now I just load the pan with JD850 to disperse the last of the dirt pile to the outer edges. I can get it a lot fuller this way & do it less time too! ;)

I put both the GL & KH on my DX18 radio & bind them both to the same model copy - meaning I can drive them both at the same time from one radio. The GL for/rev & steering is on the left stick and the KH for/rev & steering is on the right stick.

Both trks have AR8000 receivers (8ch), so the shift servos for the 3spd trans are not connected in either trk, each trk is currently using 4chs, not enough chs left to include the 3spds too. Both trks are geared differently too, so the GL is locked in 3rd gear & the KH in 2nd making them both virtually the same speed... the GL might be a wee bit faster.

I put the GL's dump boxes on Aux 1 & 2 (3pos stick switches), and the KH's on Aux 4 & 5 (rotary sliders on sides of radio), in which I had to re-assign Aux 4 to Aux 3 & Aux 5 to Gear.

By the time I got the radio programmed & the trks functioning correctly I was almost out of daylight... but I did get 3 loads of practice. Trying to drive two trks simultaneously is mind blowing difficult!!! .... especially rounding corners, I would start right turn the lead trk & couldn't help but start to turn the following trk right as well ...or if one trk was going left while the other going right, I would over steer both when I intended to go straight... It really took a lot of mental capacity to try to drive one trk separate from the other at the same time... I almost ran into myself a few times & just let go of both sticks in the nick of time! :D

Yup, I agree driving two trucks at once is not that impressive of a feat if you are actually doing it at all. Anyone can park two trucks and take a picture of them.:D:D:D Now operating a video camera at the same time takes it to a whole new level. :)

Hi joe-I can't imagine trying to drive-2-trucks at once but if anyone can I would bet on you. I have heard a lot of bad things about the "mammoth" trucks but if I remember correctly you have had yours for a long time. Have you done up-grades to it or is it stock. Looks like it hauls a nice size load.

With more practice you might be the only person in the world to drive two RC vehicles from one radio at the same time. I'd like to see a video of you driving both trucks now and then one after you've had about a months worth of practice. Good workout for your brain.

I love seeing that Vario in action.

Quite the buzz with the talk of two trucking :D... I made a vid yesterday, but using a headband camera holder to film, I never know where the darn thing is pointing & most of it was with the camera too high & can't see the 2nd trk.

So I did it again just before dark tonite & this time the camera is almost too low to show the 850 loading the trks :(... but the trks are view 90% of the time...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1-6MEQQDuM&feature=youtu.be

I have heard a lot of bad things about the "mammoth" trucks but if I remember correctly you have had yours for a long time. Have you done up-grades to it or is it stock. Looks like it hauls a nice size load.

I've had this Mammoth since it 1st came out. All that I have changed is put one of Willy Loewer's WWR 7.2v motors in it, the motor is about half the rpm of the kit motor making it a little easier too drive in small areas.

Right from the start I had this rc on a 4ch stick radio & added an esc for the dump motor drive. The esc is plugged in through Plus 1 unit to make use of the built-in limit switches, as well as Y'd to a separate ch. It'll dump with the trk moving forward at half throttle, but not in reverse.

I suppose the bad things you heard was the dump wouldn't work correctly b/c with too much weight on the steer axle, the servo for steer couldn't turn sharp enough to activate the dump? The separate esc on a separate ch fixed that.

This Mammoth hauled close to 3cubes in the summer of 2005 up a 17 degree incline with about half of the dirt shown above on its back. The entire trip up the ramp, the left front tire was about a half inch in the air all the way to the top, that's how much torque that was put on the chassis to climb such a steep grade! :D It's been a great haul trk. ;)

The wooden roadway across the grass shown in the vid, that was the ramp I made in 2005 to climb out of the basement.

Awesome stuff Joe! Your GL pup trailer turned out looking great too!

I have been meaning to ask you a question but figured you would be too busy working. I guess you have a little time so....

Do the Viper marine esc's you use have a brake? I was looking at a tio marine 30 amp at a local shop but it has a brake before reverse and I don't know if you can shut it off. I was wanting to use it for the swing on my excavator so a brake would not be good.

Thanks, Reg

RCP57, I use these http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__43377__HobbyKing_X_Car_45A_Brushed_Car_ESC_USA_w arehouse_.html

You hold the button on the ESC upon start up to program it for no brake. Inexpensive too.

I haven't added oil to either trk nor pup since I built both in 2000... I don't see any leaks on the pup, but the wdc telescope cyls do sweat a little bit. The pup must've got low, the trl tilted back a little too much & the pump might have sucked a bit of air, probably have to re-bleed the cyl too.

Both the GL & KH are using the Viper Marine 15 for for/rev, it's a soft brake. Not sure how it would perform in a hoe. I used a Servonaut S20 esc in my 850 & the brake wasn't an impairment. Currently in the 850 it's a Sabertooth 2x12.

Interesting is how the Sabertooth 2x12 in the GL behaves with the screwdrives on the dump boxes, the way it starts it almost seems the load is too heavy, but it's just the way it ramps up too speed.

Rain @6:30 this morning, got a load on the trk to go to the pig barn, the roads might dry enough in another hr to get it there before another system hits after dinner... been busy spraying in crop all week, some great sunny 20C days & zero wind.

What about you, I thought you be gone fishing by now?

Thanks Joe, I have been running a 2x12 on the swing of my Volvo and it worked great until I made a stupid mistake and hooked the battery up backwards while I wasn't paying attention. Fried the 2x12 on the swing but not the one on the tracks???? It also fried my Jetti Spin 33 that runs my Torcman motor on the pump. All in all it cost me over $200 because I was in a hurry! I managed to get another Spin 33 though and will put it in this weekend. I have another Sabertooth on order but no one has stock on them and the Robot Shop just pushed their arrival back another week so I was looking for an alternative in case they don't come in time for our show next month.

I am running 2x12's in my KH and Hayes. Like you said, they start out a bit strange on the dumps but I think the softer start is probably easier on the motors/gears.

Yes I am back fishing finally! I guess we have been going fairly steady for about a month now. I made it home last night to eat a piece of my Birthday cake so that was cool.lol Hopefully the summer will be a busy and profitable one for both of us!

I've been hiding out in my workshop the last month, now that the July heat is here with over 30 temps, it's a cool 18 in here to avoid the afternoon heat wave, better than ac!!! :)

I hauled that dirt pile in front of workshop with farm fel 3wks ago. So much rain in June every week, now the mosquitos are horribly abundant, I gotta wear a mesh jacket/hood while I work outside mornings & evenings.

This dirt goes to back of workshop to build up outer edges of the wall. I fill the pan with the 850, spread & pack with the pan. This moist dirt packs so well with the 4206 running over it, I walk on it myself without hardly leaving a print!

MDF sorta rings a bell, thanx Steve.

2x6 shouldn't sag too much I hope Kent... I sat on the middle of each long span & the bubble moved a little bit. I have the outside edges tipped up to the high side of the bubble mark so the screws & tools, if they wanna roll will go towards the wall rather than off onto the floor... till I get a bunch of projects spread across the area, then maybe it will hold level.

The middle of the floor will be left open for now. I have had thoughts of making a rolling bolt bin - tool carrier to drag from one project to next, regular use tools & parts at easy reach. ;).

Thanx Reg. How big is your shop & when did you build it?

Joe,
The shop is looking great. My shop in the basement of my house is a similar size with the exact same layout. One thing I did was to put a double (5-0x6-8) set of doors from the gararge to the workshop. It makes it so much easier to move equipment and materials into the workshop. Since my basement is all conditioned I didnt need insulated doors. At Lowes a single (2-6x6-8) door was $70 and a double was $278 :jaw: When I was buying the doors I got to looking and the head is the exact same as the non hinge side jamb. I bought 2 single doors and removed the right jamb from one and the left from another. I used one of the jambs as a new head to make a pair. It only took about 45 minutes to do. Just make sure you buy a set of opposite handed doors.

My front room has a 12 foot roll-up door, so what doesn't fit thru the standard walk-in door into the middle room, I probably don't want it in there anyway. The front room is 24 x 30 and will have just one workbench on the east wall (same side as the lathe/mill in adjoining room).

I just got one more coat of paint in the corner of the front room where building materials were moved from, then build a high workbench that I'll stand to use on occasion... then call an electrician. Once the entire shop is powered, then I'll start moving in and adding new tools... :)

I barely started harvest Thursday on winter wht & got rained out same day... too tough to go yesterday, currently it's cloudy & 19C... gonna go out & try a different field in a few hrs that I desiccated 3wks ago, the outside round & draws that were full of weeds, if that does go (120ac worth) - that'll likely be all I'll be doing till the sun shines with 25+ temps. The 7day forecast doesn't look good with a lot of cloud & chances of rain... I hope it's wrong.

Weather just not cooperating yet with a lot of rain thru later August. Everybody with different crops, whether it's yellow peas, lentils, even some early planted durum have been harvesting sprouted grain... the winter wht field I started in, the sample is 13% sprouted - automatic animal feed grade. Big yields again this yr with +15inches rainfall since planting, but quality is starting out poor. :(

Too tough to harvest yesterday yet & today very cloudy, probably won't go tomorrow either... so to escape dismal reality I tinker in the back room today, cleaning up the last of what I hauled in a month or so ago. This dirt got too dry & too many hard lumps to spread & pack on the outer edges, so I'm just stock piling out of the way for now. Probably screen it again later & dump the lumps outside.

Not much to see yet, the undercarriage is built & trying to attach upper plate. The bridge has a hollow area to fit the bl speed controls for the tracks within, but it's very narrow & not allot room with the center bearing coming down the middle. Not done the real work yet RW, last couple wks busy either loading Btrains long hauling & trking grain locally myself. This coming wk I have at least 6 Btrains coming for mustard & feed grains and I have deliveries to make to the hog barn just down the road from me. Plus I have 190mt of fertilizer to get home from town sometime before Dec 1st... gonna be at it for awhile yet... and winter arrived today with 6" snowfall forecasted over the next couple days & -20C by tomorrow morning... a 30 degree temperature change in just a few days Brrrrr

So yesterday was about 4hrs of dirt hauling out of the basement before dark... the last 50 loads worth for the yr.I think I may have moved out just over 3cubes this yr, about 2 cubes in the last 3 wkends. I was looking for a picture that showed where I was at last spring, but it doesn't look like I took one, although the vid 'Hauling out in April' shows the size of the pile last Spring.

I spread out Izzy's dozer kit on the workbench last Sunday night & almost as quickly as I started - I was done! b/c I didn't have a 2.5mm tap. How I really hate that when I get charged up to do something & suddenly realize I can't b/c a part is missing or a tool I don't have... where I live there is no running down town for a quik buy! I had taps by Friday & started building the tracks Friday night. :)

A quick trip to the city Monday afternoon for farm business, I picked this up too... some of you can probably guess what it is. :D

I'm sure glad my hotrod diesel isn't a long box, it just barely fits with a foot or so front & back.

My contractor got the cement work done around the westside of my house mid Oct. The pad by the step, I'm thinking I will put a hot tub there. :)

And they came last week to do the framing. The metal siding was ordered after b/c the contractor wanted to get it cut to ground contour, as it is known now there is a 13" difference in height from the house down to the back of shop. Contractor figures they'll still get it put up before xmas, but the spray foam insulation will have to wait till next summer for warmer temps for adhesion... I don't think I'll be doing any digging in there this winter. :(

This pile of dirt is what the tlb took out around the house for cement prep, this will be a fantastic job for the 10 scale D9 to level out & spread next summer. ;)

You've been busy Joe! Your shop is coming along really nice and I am envious of all that space! So what welder did you buy? Is it a straight up TIG or ???

I can't wait to see you weld up some cool sh**! I guess my stuff won't be very unique anymore now that all the heavy hitters are getting TIG welders!

That's what I was guessing, tig. I'm on the border between miller or Hobart easy tig. Hopefully Santa will find his way down the gas vent to the Xmas tree in garage, right next to the workbench. :). I also have been using office furniture (leftover / abandoned stuff) I've acquired. I raised the main desk I work at by about 10". And finally found a cheep chair at staples office supply. It's adjustable from regular to bar height. Simple, plastic rollers, (better on smooth concrete) and was cheep for a new chair. I can imagine with all that new room you are gonna be rolling around a lot!!
I know what you mean about not having anywhere to go when you need something. I have plenty around here but never can find exactly what I need when I need it too!! I lucked out with McMaster Carr, if I get my order in before 3-4 I have it next day and no extra shipping. I've learned on a lot of this little stuff to order two, my lack of eye hand coordination usually ends up breaking those little taps!!! Keep the posts up to date on the new dozer. And yes you are right about one of your fellow countrymen, the one who beat me to guessing what's in the box, his dump boxes are darn good!!

Oh and I'll post up some more machining operations if you post up some welding stuff :)

Everything's looking good Joe. I see what you mean about building more benches and why you wrapped them all around the building since you already have one covered up:D:D:cool:

I'm with Coop and Reg, new tig!?

It's a Miller 180 tig welder... I told the clerk what I wanted to weld (steel & aluminum) & thicknesses, this is what he recommended... other than that I don't know, I was kinda in a hurry. :D They didn't have it in stock, it was delivered to a friend's business in town where I picked it up Friday... it's still in the box. It came with a book, "tig welding for dummies", I should go fish that out right now & get busy reading. :D

I think you're quite safe in that regard Reg, I won't be welding any trk cabs anytime soon. ;) I hope my tig skills develop quickly enough to have a mule train of cross dumps worthy of the 4206 to pull by spring. :)

Sounds like a fair trade RW. I don't think the learning curve will be too difficult for me, I got pretty good at vertical stick welding with professional looking results before getting a mig 10yrs ago. Mig is just easy peasy to do with thicknesses greater than 1/8. I'm juiced to learn tig welding now, I just hope my eyesight is good enough to see the correct puddle I need to achieve... how my eyes have changed in just the last 3yrs.

Here's a vid I made yesterday. Using just the one bd trl the last two wkends, my turn arounds are less than half the time with the Btrain... about 12 loads an hour = roughly two 5ga pails of dirt. The B lead volume is about 2/3's of the pup, so I'm getting out more dirt per hour with one trl vs two. :D

I am assuming you bought the Diversion 180? I started out with a Diversion 165 and it was/is a great little welder. The 180 comes with a foot pedal and a few other options over the 165 so I think it will be a great machine for you. I use a Lincoln now but it was just the right deal at the right time for a larger, more light/commercial welder. For what we do I don't think it is necessary to have all the bells and whistles. It just adds to the confusion while we are teaching ourselves!lol I do use the pulse feature on my Lincoln from time to time but not always. It is nice for doing long beads on thin material. Does the 180 have that? The 165 did not. A friend of mine that is a welder/fabricator by trade told my to buy a Dynasty 200. It was out of my price range but also out of my realm of understanding with way too many adjustments! I'm still learning from the TIG welding for dummies DVD!lol

Good luck with it and remember to be patient!
